THE GAME

UCONN VS. TOWSON HISTORYTonight’s game is the second meeting between the two schools with Towson posting a 28-27 win on October 2, 1993 in Storrs. The Huskies scored a touch-down by Monte Nowden on a 21-yard pass from Zeke Rogers with three sec-onds left in the game, but the Huskies went for the win on a two-point conver-sion attempt and failed. The Huskies were a member of the Yankee Conference at that point while Towson was an independent at the time.

A QUICK LOOK AT TOWSONTowson is an NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Team and plays in the Colonial Athletic Conference. Towson posted a 7-4 overall record last year and a 6-2 league mark while in 2011, the Tigers were 9-3 overall as they advanced to the first round of the NCAA FCS playoffs and finished the year ranked No. 8 in the country. Towson is ranked No. 12 in the preseason FCS Subdivision Coaches Poll and No. 11 by The Sports Network.

UCONN-TOWSON CONNECTIONSTowson head coach Rob Ambrose is beginning his fifth year as the head coach at Towson and previously was on the UConn staff from 2002-08. He joined the UConn staff as the quarterbacks coach and added the title of passing game coordinator in 2005. He then served as UConn’s offensive coordinator from 2006-08. The Huskies played in three bowl games while Ambrose was on the staff. Towson Director of Football Operations Jon Dalquist had the same position at UConn from 2007-08. Towson senior wide receiver Leon Kinnard is a transfer from UConn.

UCONN VS. THE CAAUConn has a long tradition of playing CAA schools, as the league is a “direct descendant” of the Yankee Conference, which UConn was a member of from 1947-1997 and the Atlantic 10 from 1998-99. Against current CAA members, UConn is 7-20 vs. Delaware, 1-4 vs. James Madison, 39-31-3 vs. Maine, 29-36-6 vs. New Hampshire, 51-35-8 vs. Rhode Island, 9-1 vs. Richmond, 0-1 vs. Towson, 4-7 vs. Villanova and 1-4 vs. William & Mary. UConn has never played Albany and will play Stony Brook for the first time next year on Sept. 6 at Rent-schler Field.

RENTSCHLER GAMEDAY

At UConn home games, FanFest takes place starting four hours before kickoff up until 30 minutes before the game. It takes place between Gates A and B outside the stadium gates...The offerings change each game, but activities typi-cally include inflatable games for children, live bands, promotional vehicles and UConn student-athletes from various teams signing autographs....The “Husky Walk” is a chance for fans to welcome the UConn team as they get off the team buses and head to the stadium. That takes place approximately two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff between Gates A and B...Once again this season at the end of home games, the UConn team will sing the “UConn Husky” fight song in front of the student section at Rentschler Field.

HUSKIES AND NATIONAL POLLSConnecticut has been ranked in the Associated Press poll for six weeks during its FBS history, four weeks in the USA Today poll and seven weeks in the BCS rankings. UConn was No. 25 on Dec. 5, 2010, in its only ranking of that year. The Huskies were No. 16 on Oct. 28, 2007 and Nov. 4, 2007, No. 25 on Nov. 11, 2007, No. 20 on Nov. 18, 2007 and No. 24 on Sept. 28, 2008.

UCONN VS. RANKED TEAMSThe game vs. Louisville Nov. 24, 2012, marked the 20th time in school history that the Huskies faced a team ranked in the As-sociated Press poll at the time of the game. UConn has a 2-18 record in those games with the two wins coming vs. Louisville and on Oct. 27, 2007 with a 22-15 win over No. 11 USF. UConn first played a ranked team in the 2001 season opener at No. 9 Virginia Tech. UConn has played the country’s top ranked team once when it traveled to Miami on Oct. 5, 2002.

UCONN FOOTBALL A LEADER IN ACADEMICSThe UConn football program continues to be a leader in terms of academic performance by its student-athletes. UConn was the top team in the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of both October 2008 and ’09 among Big East league schools. In 2010, the Huskies GSR was third in the Big East and within four points of the second place team in 2011, was tied for fourth in the league, but within four points of the two schools that were tied for second. UConn’s 75 percent GSR mark released in 2012 was well ahead of the national GSR for FBS teams, which was 67 percent. The UConn football program also had the highest NCAA GSR for African-American student-athletes among all state universi-ties that participated in a bowl game in 2008. In five of the past seven years, including 2007, ‘08 and ‘09, UConn was recog-nized by the American Football Coaches Association for its high graduation rate. UConn’s overall GSR in 2009 was the third-highest of the more than 50 state universities that participated in a bowl game. In 2012, the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the UConn football team was an impressive 963 over a four-year cycle, with a one-year mark of 950 for the 2010-11 academic year. The 963 was above the national average for FBS schools (952) and public institutions (943). UConn’s 2013 APR score of 958 was 11 points higher than the national average of public institutions.

HUSKIES VS. NON-CONFERENCE FOES SINCE 2002Connecticut boasts a 45-22 record against non-conference opponents in the regular season since making the move to the FBS in 2002. The Huskies have won 20 of their last 29 regular season non-league games overall with the only blemishes coming via a one-point loss at Virginia (17-16) in 2007, losses to North Carolina in 2008 and ‘09, Michigan and Temple in ’10, Vanderbilt, Iowa State and Western Michigan in ’11 and North Carolina State and Western Michigan in ’12. UConn has posted the following records in non-conference regular season games: 6-6 (2002), 9-3 (2003), 4-1 (2004), 3-1 (2005), 3-2 (2006), 4-1 (2007), 4-1 (2008), 4-1 (2009), 3-2 (2010), 2-3 (2011) and 3-2 (2012).

HUSKIES ON THE REBOUNDUConn is 34-20 in games following a loss since Oct. 26, 2002. The Huskies lost their 2012 season finale vs. Cincinnati and the record includes games over two seasons.

RENTSCHLER FIELDThe Huskies moved into brand new Rentschler Field in East Hartford for the 2003 season and UConn will mark the 10th Anniversary of the stadium in 2013 with a number of special events and promotions, including the 2013 game tickets, which features a great moment in Rentschler Field history on each one.The ticket for the Towson game features quarterback Dan Orlovsky and the Opening Day Game, a 34-10 win over Indiana on Aug. 30, 2003.Located within miles of Interstates 91, 84 and 384, the home of the Huskies lies on 75 acres of land donated to the State of Connecticut from the historic Pratt & Whitney Airfield. The stadium, like the former airfield, is named for that company’s founder, Frederick Rentschler. The stadium boasts a capacity of 40,000 with 38 luxury suites. The Huskies have sold out 29 of their first 62 dates at Rent-schler Field. UConn has played to 95.2-pct. of capacity all-time there, drawing 2,394,653 fans, or an average of 38,623 per game.

FRIENDLY RENTSCHLER FIELDThe Huskies went 7-0 at home in 2007 at Rentschler Field and also 6-0 in 2010. UConn’s 3-4 mark at home in 2006 was its only sub-.500 record at Rentschler Field. UConn finished 4-3 at Rentschler Field in 2011 and was 3-3 in ’12.The seven home wins in 2007 set a school record for a single season which was previously set in 2004. UConn stands at 45-16 all-time at Rentschler Field including a 25-7 mark in non-conference games.
