Match backgroundClub Atlético de Madrid have it all to do against city rivals Real Madrid CF on what is sure to be an emotional eveningat the Vicente Calderón.

• In what will be the last European tie at the stadium that has been their home since 1966, Diego Simeone's Atléticoare attempting to win a European tie against their neighbours at the fifth time of asking. Cristiano Ronaldo's first-leghat-trick, that gave the holders a 3-0 win at the Santiago Bernabéu, makes that an unlikely prospect.

• Real Madrid have ended Atlético's UEFA Champions League hopes in each of the last three seasons, includingdramatic victories in the finals of 2014 and 2016.

Previous meetings• This is a fifth European meeting for Real Madrid and Atlético, all in the European Cup, with Madrid having won allfour previous ties.

• Their first international fixtures came in the 1958/59 European Cup semi-finals. Madrid won the home first leg 2-1,Héctor Rial's goal (15) and a Ferenc Puskás penalty (33) overturning Chuzo's 13th-minute opener. Atlético prevailedin the return thanks to Enrique Collar's 43rd-minute effort.

• That meant a replay six days later, played in Zaragoza, where Alfredo Di Stéfano's early strike was swiftly cancelledout by Collar. Puskás dealt the decisive blow three minutes before half-time to take Madrid into a fourth successivefinal.

• The line-ups at La Romareda on 13 May 1959 were:Real Madrid: Domínguez, Miche, Santamaría, Lesmes, Ruiz, Zárraga, Mateos, Kopa, Di Stéfano, Puskás, Gento.Atlético: Pazos, Rivilla, Callejo, Mendiondo, Chuzo, Calleja, Miguel, Agustín, Vavá, Peiró, Collar.

• It was 55 years until the teams' next European contest, in the 2014 final in Lisbon – the first final fixture involvingclubs from the same city in European Cup history. Diego Godín's header (36) gave newly crowned Spanishchampions Atlético the lead, and it looked like that would be enough for Simeone's side to claim their first EuropeanCup – only for Sergio Ramos to level at the last (90+3). Carlo Ancelotti's Madrid ran away with it in extra time courtesyof goals from Gareth Bale (110), Marcelo (118) and a Ronaldo penalty (120).

• The line-ups at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica were:Real Madrid: Casillas, Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Fábio Coentrão (Marcelo 59), Khedira (Isco 59), Modrić, Di María,Bale, Benzema (Morata 79), Ronaldo.Atlético: Courtois, Juanfran, Miranda, Godín, Filipe Luís (Alderweireld 83), Tiago, Koke, Gabi, Raúl García (Sosa 66),Villa, Diego Costa (Adrián López 9).

• Pepe was an unused substitute for Madrid.

• The Merengues also came out on top in the 2014/15 quarter-finals, Javier Hernández heading the only goal of the tielate in the second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu.

• The teams for the first leg at the Vicente Calderón on 14 April 2015 were:Atlético: Oblak, Juanfran, Miranda, Godín, Siqueira, Mario Suárez, Koke (F Torres 83), Gabi, Arda Turan, Griezmann(Raúl García 77), Mandžukić.Real Madrid: Casillas, Carvajal (Arbeloa 85), Varane, Ramos, Marcelo, Kroos, Modrić, James, Bale, Benzema (Isco85), Ronaldo.

• Madrid and Atlético both advanced all the way to the final again in 2015/16. Ramos's 15th-minute breakthrough inMilan was cancelled out by Atlético substitute Yannick Carrasco 11 minutes from time, Antoine Griezmann havingmissed a 48th-minute spot kick.

• With no further goals, the match went to penalties. After Lucas Vázquez, Marcelo, Bale and Ramos had convertedfor Madrid, and Griezmann, Gabi and Saúl Ñíguez had done likewise, Juanfran struck the base of the post withAtlético's fourth kick, leaving Ronaldo to convert and take the trophy to Madrid for the 11th time.

• The sides at San Siro on 28 May 2016 were:Real Madrid: Navas, Carvajal (Danilo 52), Ramos, Pepe, Marcelo, Casemiro, Kroos (Isco 72), Modrić, Bale,Benzema (Lucas Vázquez 77), Ronaldo.Atlético: Oblak, Juanfran, Godín, Savić, Filipe Luís (Lucas Hernández 109), Gabi, Augusto Fernández (Carrasco 46),Koke (Partey 116), Saúl, Griezmann, F Torres.

• The capital duo have met in 204 league, Spanish Cup and Spanish Super Cup games, with 103 Madrid wins, 51 forAtlético and 50 draws. Atlético have lost only one of their last ten domestic matches against their local rivals sincelosing the 2014 UEFA Champions League final, recording five victories and four draws.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?• Teams have overturned a first-leg deficit to go through 40 times, including FC Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund,Leicester City FC and AS Monaco FC in the 2016/17 round of 16. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FCin the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's victory against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overhauled was achieved by FC Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain in thisseason's last 16, when they lost 4-0 away but progressed thanks to a 6-1 home success. That eclipsed the previousrecord held by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals, when they went down 4-1 at AC Milan but won4-0 at home.

• Twenty-eight ties have been decided on away goals, including nine where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• In all, 28 ties have required extra time. Twelve have been settled by extra time alone: five quarter-finals includingReal Madrid CF-FC Bayern München in 2016/17, five round of 16 encounters, the 2007/08 semi-final betweenChelsea and Liverpool FC, and the 2013/14 final.

• Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The firsttwo-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005after a 2-2 aggregate draw, still the only quarter-final to go to penalties.

• The 2015/16 round of 16 tie between Club Atlético de Madrid and PSV was the first to finish goalless after two legs.Thirteen have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Real Madrid CF's defeat of Manchester City FC in the 2015/16semi-finals.

• Real Madrid won 6-1 at FC Schalke 04 in the 2013/14 round of 16, equalling the knockout phase record for thebiggest first-leg lead – Bayern's 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2008/09 round of 16. Bayerneventually went through 12-1 after a 7-1 stroll in the home second leg; that tie also featured more goals (13) over itstwo legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie.

• Bayern hold the record for the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match havingbeaten both FC Basel 1893 (2011/12) and FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15) 7-0 in the round of 16 second leg.

• The biggest winning margin in a semi-final game is Bayern's 4-0 defeat of FC Barcelona in the 2012/13 first leg andMadrid's 4-0 win at Bayern in the second leg a year later. AFC Ajax beat Bayern 5-2 in 1994/95, while there were 4-1wins for Juventus (1996/97 and 1997/98) and Valencia CF (1999/2000). Six teams have won 3-0, most recentlyBayern's defeat of Olympique Lyonnais in 2009/10.

• Bayern's 7-0 defeat of Barcelona in 2012/13 is the biggest aggregate win in a UEFA Champions League semi-final.That 4-1 win for Juventus against Monaco in 1997/98 was part of the biggest aggregate semi-final score. Theprincipality club won 3-2 in their home return to make it ten goals in the tie.

• Madrid's 6-0 second-leg win against FC Zürich in 1963/64 is the biggest European Cup semi-final victory. EintrachtFrankfurt's 12-4 success against Rangers FC in 1959/60 is the biggest aggregate total.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to lift the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Real Madrid 1998, Milan2003, 2007). Bob Paisley (Liverpool 1977, 1978, 1981) was the first coach to win three times, a feat Carlo Ancelotti(Milan 2003, 2007, Real Madrid 2014) replicated.

• In 2014 Ancelotti also became the fifth coach to win the trophy with two clubs; Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983), José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004,Internazionale 2010) and Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid 1998, Bayern 2013) had previously achieved the feat.

• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy, with Milan (1989, 1990) the last club topick up consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997)and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose.

• Only two sides have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) andJuventus (1996, final in Rome). Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern werebeaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
