uiuLearn ePortfolio Basics EPORTFOLIO> THE BASICS
This tutorial covers the basic functionality of the ePortfolio tool. Please consult with your Instructor or Department Chair
to determine if there are specific ePortfolio requirements in your Academic journey.
STEP 1> Locate the ePortfolio tool in the navigation bar. ePortfolio links are available on every page in uiuLearn. On
the homepage, click ‘ePortfolio’. If you are in a uiuLearn classroom, click the ‘More Tools’ menu and then
choose ‘ePortfolio’. The ePortfolio tool is not a course-level tool, so no matter where you access it, it will
take you to the same place.
STEP 2> The ePortfolio home page will show a feed of items in your ePortfolio or items that were shared with you.
First, let’s upload an item to your ePortfolio. To do this, locate the text box and set of links near the top of
the ePortfolio page.

STEP 3> You can choose to do three options at this time. You can type in the text box to reflect on an item you are
uploading, you can upload a file to your ePortfolio, or you can add a web link to your ePortfolio. In this
example, let’s type a short reflection on a research paper that we want to upload to our ePortfolio.
STEP 4> First, Type in a reflection in the ‘What are you learning? box.
STEP 5> Then, click the ‘Add Files’ button and add in the document of your choice.
STEP 6> Now that your reflection and file are uploaded, there are two additional optional items that you can fill out.
There is a ‘Share’ button. You can share your upload with ANY uiuLearn user. This will be helpful if you need
to share your ePortfolio items with instructors or students. There is also an ‘Add tags’ button. Tags are ways
for you to keep your content organized. You can tag something with a word that categorizes an item. Later,
you can use that tag in a search to quickly see all items related to that tag.
STEP 7> When everything is set to your liking, click the ‘Add to ePortfolio’ button. You now have your first item
uploaded into your own ePortfolio.

STEP 8> Once you have items in your ePortfolio, you can filter, search or browse your items using the links in the
ePortfolio tool.
STEP 9> After you upload multiple items to your ePortfolio, you can begin to assemble two special items of an
ePortfolio. These options are Presentation and Collection. We will cover Collections first.
STEP 10> A collection is essentially a folder. You can put items in a collection to group them together into a single
item. You can then easily share the collection with another person so they can see all of the items in a
collection. Let’s walk through that right now. On the ePortfolio homepage, click ‘New Collection’

STEP 11> Next, enter a Name for your collection. You can also optionally add a description and/or tags. Then, click
‘Save and Close’ when done.
STEP 12> Now that you have a collection, there are some options for items you can add to your collection. You can
‘Add Reflection’ to your collection if you have something new to reflect on. You can also add Comments to
your collection by clicking the ‘Add Comment’ button. Comments are typically used by the people you share
a collection with so they can provide feedback. Next, let’s add the research paper we uploaded earlier to this
collection.

STEP 17> Select the Collection you created and then click ‘Add’
STEP 18> The item is now added to your collection!
STEP 19> Now let’s show how to create a ‘Presentation’. A Presentation is a great way to assemble all of your
ePortfolio items into a shareable nice-looking web page. This can be used to showcase the things you are
most proud of during your academic journey. You can then share with potential employers, friends, family or
colleagues.

can choose to apply, based on your preference. Click ‘Save’ when done.

STEP 22> From here, there is a lot of customization available to you in the ‘Content/Layout’ tab, ‘Banner’ tab and
‘Theme’ tab. Please watch this video for an overview of each of the options.
STEP 23> Now that you have items in your ePortfolio, a collection and a presentation, let’s share those items. Go back
to the ‘My Items’ page of your ePortfolio.
STEP 24> Find the item(s) you want to share and click the dropdown arrow next to it. Then, choose ‘Share’.
STEP 25> Choose the ‘Add Users and Groups’. You can also choose ‘Allow public viewing of presentation’.

STEP 26> In the search bar, type in the name of the person you want to share with. They must be a uiuLearn user.
NOTE: If you want to share with people outside of UIU, click ‘Allow public viewing of presentation’ in Step 25.
Then, copy/paste that link into an email to the individual(s) of your choice.
STEP 27> Click on the person’s name that you want to share the item with. Then, scroll down and assign the
permissions that you want to give that person. Be careful assigning permissions! When done, click the
‘Share’ button.
