ULTIMATE EUROPEAN CLUB FOOTBALL

HISTORY

From 2005 to 2007 through my workplace , I invited 15 colleagues from around the nation to

participate in an e-mail draft where each person would select 6 teams each from any of the

major European Leagues .

Each person’s 6 teams’ tallies including League Results , Championship League Wins and

UEFA/Europa League wins would be added up each week to determine a leaderboard and at

the end of the season ,determine the eventual champion. In at least 2 seasons the competition

was decided in the final week and once year the final league game in one particular league

SOURCE DATA AND QUALIFICATION

European teams and leagues which were selected “qualify” on the basis that at least one of the

teams from any European League made the following “Cup” competitions

UEFA Champions League (CL) (32 teams qualify) and Europa League (EL) (48 teams Qualify)

As well as the teams which make these competitions , data from league results for all other

teams in the respective leagues/countries was also incorporated

In the current year – there are 32 European Leagues / Countries league data which can be used

– so there is a selection of about 460 different teams altogether

Data is freely available and transferred into text/excel format for sorting and calculation – all

cup competitions are also available through this site and information is publicly available, This

text or excdel format data could easily be transferred to a plug in or system for a simple

calculation

IDEAL NUMBER OF PARTICPANTS AND TEAMS CHOSEN

Can be for 2,4,8 or 16 participants to ensure a reasonably close competitions

Ideal number is 8 people as it would ensure fans would get at least one of their favourite

teams as well as being able to pick top teams elsewhere (pick from the head or heart)

Each person/owner could have 2,4,8,16 or 32 teams each

Snake or Auction Draft are options – can also convert this into a Salary based idea

Live Draft engine is a preference – options could b e drafts via FB messenger, e-mail or social

drafts with actual people!!

LEAGUE RESULTS and “Potential” (POT)

Each team receives 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw/tie – 0 points for a loss in any

game each week. If a team Wins and scores 3 points – it has 100 % result . If a team ties/draws

it’s game – it scores 1 out of 3 possible points (33%)

Man City has played 17 games so far in EPL. From those 17 games they had the potential to

score a total of 51 points (17 x 3), however they did have one draw so they have scored 49 out

of 51 points available – their performance % is the 49 out of 51 points (96.08%)

EURO LEAGUE CUP COMPETITIONS and Bonuses

For every stage of the 2 major cups (Champions League/Europa) – each team receives bonus

points for qualifying for the competition and progressing to the next stages

QUALIFICATIONS BONUS

Champions League (CL)– 5 points bonus for each stage reached

Europa League (EU)– 3 points bonus for each stage reached

CUP STAGE POINTS , POTENTIAL and Overall ratinga

For each stage of both competitions – every team in every league has the potential to earn 3

points per stage which can also be added to their league results to provide an “overall” rating.

Marseille also participated in the “Group Stage” where they played 6 games against 3 other

teams to reach the next stage

Marseille scores 8 Points from a potential 18 (6 games x 3 pts) which is a performance of 44.4%.

They receive another small bonus if they score points in this stage – which is a potential 3

points. Marseille received 44% of 3 points (1.33) which is added to their League and Cup

Points.

Marseille were 41 out of 57 points after cup stage bonus – 1.33 is added to the Points so the

result means 42.33 out of 57 points – giving them a rating of 74.27%. So on league results

alone their performance was 68.63% , with cup stage bonuses this gives them an overall euro

rating of 74.27%

If they make the next stage their rating increases, if they lose they do not earn any more

bonuses

2nd Scenario – TEAMS WHO HAVE NOT MADE EITHER CL OR EU

If a team does NOT qualify for either Champions League or Europa – this stage bonus REDUCES

their overall rating and is taken off their league results

PSV are on top of their league (Netherlands) at the moment and have scored 40/48 points.

However, as they have not qualified for either Champions League or Europa League , they will

not get cup bonuses

So now PSV have 40 League points and no bonus , the 48 point “potential” has increased to 54

(was 48) Points (3 points per stage of comp) so their overall rating is now 40 out of 54 Points ,

giving them an OVERALL rating of 74.07%

League % 83.33 and Overall 74.07%

Note : a team which is very strong in it’s own league still can be great value as long as they continue to

dominate their league and win league games , the bonuses they lose in overall rating can be quickly

regained by winning league game

Champions League teams bonuses and Europa League

Teams which qualify for Champions League receive 5 points for making the group stage. This is more

than Europa league (3 points) as Champions League is made up of actual league champions and teams

who have finished high enough in their leagues to qualify automatically – general teams in stronger

leagues (England, Spain,Italy Germany) also automatically qualify for Europa however those teams

have finished 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th in the stronger leagues

For a team In Champions League – 32 teams which received the initial 5 points bonus for making the

final 32 play in 6 games to determine who makes the final 16. The top 2 teams in each group go through

to the next stage and the 3rd place team then is sent to Europa League

Europa league Group stage is 12 groups of 4 teams (48 teams) the top 2 go through (24 teams) to the

Next stage and the 8 3rd place teams from Champions league then come into the final 32 for Europa

League

A team which received 5 points for Champions League will also receive 3 points for each stage of Europa

league it reaches

Man City qualified for Champions League and moved to the next stage – therefore 2 stages = 10 points

For BOTH Champs/Europa stages the POTENTIAL is 6 points ( 2 Stages – 3 points) – so therefore Man

City has scored 10 out of 6 points which is better than 100 % -

In the group stage before reaching the round of 16 , Man City played 6 games and scored 15/18

potential points which is a performance of 83.33% . As the next stage bonus is 5 points – they receive a

bonus of 4.17 (83% of 5 Points) - the 4.17 is added to the 59 Pts (League + cup) and divided by the

Potential (57) – giving Man City an Overall rating of 63.17/57 = 110.82%

Of course if man City gets knocked out at next stage , their overall rating will reduce as the potential

points increase. And they receive no bonuses – they can recover these points back with league wins

after this . After Round of 16 – only teams which win games receive the 5 points bonus

EXAMPLE 2

Atletico Madrid made the final 32 of Champions League but finished 3rd after the group stage –

they still get the 5 points for qualifying for champs league and also 3 points for Europa league

At this stage Atletico have 8 points from a potential of 6 (2 Cup stages x 3pts)

From their 6 games in the group stages of Champs League they scored 7/18 pts and still

received 1.94 Points from a possible 5 points – so at this stage they have 42.94 (41 plus the

group stage bonus of 1.94) out of 51 pts – their current overall rating is 84.20%

• Note every stage of both CL and EU 3 points is ADDED to the Potential – teams who

are knocked out will reduce by 3 points for each subsequent stage of each comp

The team which wins CL can potentially earn 25 Bonus points as well as the group stage whilst

EL winner will earn 18 points as a bonus as well as their group stage bonus

Repeating that any team in any league which has not made either CL or EU reduces in value

with each stage of CL or EU as the potential is increased by 3 points at each stage , it is likely if a

team continues to perform well in it’s own league – their overall potential will still be

reasonable

OTHER BONUSES AND PENALTIES

Each team which WINS it’s own league will receive another bonus of 3 points (1 win)

Any team which is relegated will receive NEGATIVE 3 points

COMPETITION EXAMPLE

In this example – All Euro Teams were sorted by OVR rating

8 “owners” received 10 teams each (total of 80 out of the 460 teams from 32 leagues) – snake

draft from 1 to 8 and then 8 to 1 until each owner had 10 teams each - the top 80 teams on

current ratings were selected – this will not always be the case however for test purposes this

is for an example only

So you can see there is plenty of variety when it comes to leagues and teams – if there is

generally to 16 participants – people can pick with their heart if they are fans of a particular

team , residents of a country, or like teams from other leagues (Note Vincenzo has 2 Italian

teams and Andy has 2 English Teams)

- Note how close these results are! Less than a percentage point between Team 1 and 8 –

remembering this changes from week to week and with every stage of CL and EU.

- Someone like “Andy” and “Los Catalans” who have Man City and Barcelona which should

progress further in CL will improve – this one is not over!

LEAGUE OWNER CUP or League Competition weekly head to head match-ups

Owner matches are possible only early in the season (August, September and November) as

some of the leagues finish mid November (Belarus, Norway and Sweden)

Weekly matchups between owners or a “Cup” Competition between the 2,4,8 or 16 owners

Rules – If each of the owner’s 10 teams play 1 league game each in a particular week they get

a “weekly total” – this would be matched up against another owner’s 8 teams - depending on

the number of participants this could be done in weekly matchups or in a knockout / cup

format – this would be based on LEAGUE results only and not CL/EU points

These matchups can only occur if BOTH owners have the same amount of games played –

ideally if owner 8 has 10 teams who play 1 game each in a week and Owner B has the same –

the totals could be matched up for a result – standings could be generated or a “Cup” knockout

between owners could occur

BASIC RULES

4.8 or 16 people would pick from a selection of 4,8 or 16 teams from Premier League,

Championship, League 1 and League 2

4 participants – can have up to 4 teams per league (16 teams)

8 Participants- can have 2 teams each

16 – 1 team per league

Reason for picking 16 teams out of the 20 in EPL and 24 teams in other 3 leagues being that

this allows a chance for any of the teams to gain promotion or be relegated – 4 teams will not

be selected from EPL and 8 teams each from the other leagues

scored 32 out of the possible 42 – their league performance is therefore 76.19%

EFL and FA Cup Points

There are 2 major cup comps in English Football – the English League Cup and FA Cup in which

all teams from all leagues participate in.

Teams which win a Cup Tie/game will receive a bonus 1 point per win, and then if they reach a

Quarter Final, Semi or Cup Final – 3 points per win – these bonus points are added

Bristol City have won 4 EFL cup games in the qualifying rounds so far. They gain 4 points added

onto their league points , so that increases their points to 38/57 points , their overall

performance is 66.67 %.

Bristol City have made the Quarter Final Stage so they will earn another 3 points at the

completion of the QF game and should they win, gain another 3 points after that – therefore

their Cup + League Points will rise to 41/57 points and their overall will increase to 71%

PROMOTION AND RELEGATION

At the end of the season – the EPL Champions will receive a bonus 3 points for winning EPL.

The teams which get promoted from Championship, League 1 and 2 will get 3 points each if

they get promoted to the next tier – the bonus 3 points are added to their points and this will

increase their overall %

Any team which is RELEGATED – will be penalized 3 points for being relegated – this would

reduce the overall performance

LG2) – therefore 16 teams are taken from the 4 leagues in a snake draft 1 to 8 and 8 to 1

As you can see from the League Results only – this is extremely close as most owners have a

team in the top 8 in a league and also teams positioned 9th to 16th

Overall rating is League Points plus Cup points divided by Potential League Points – generally if

a team has scored a cup win , a QF, SF or Final win they gain bonuses and their overall rating

will increase – the current season is till in progress and therefore this will chance week to week

and of course if teams have a league champion, promoted team or a relegated team this will

affect the end result

Owner League or Cup Comp Option

A head to head option is available through the league season as all leagues run from August

until May – EPL teams play 38 games and other leagues 46 games each.

If an owner’s all 8 teams play 1 league game each – the results would be added together to give

a weekly total – this would be matched up against another owner to determine a win, loss or

draw against the other owner

A fair matchup can only occur if both owners have had exactly the same amount of games

played in one week – Owner A must have 8 games played and Owner B 8 Games

A schedule and standings can be generated – an Owner Cup Comp could also take place under

the same scenario – as long as all teams owned by each person play 1 league game each
