STREET VENDORSA street vendor is a person who offers goods or
services for sale to the public without having a
permanently built structure but with a temporary
static structure or mobile stall (or head-load).
WHY STREET VENDORS ?
• Most street vendors provide the main source of income for their
households, bringing food to their families and paying school fees
for their children.
• Street vendors are an integral part of urban economies around the
world.
• They are offering easy access to a wide range of goods and services
in public spaces.
• Starting from fresh vegetables to prepared foods, from building
materials to garments and crafts, from consumer electronics to
auto repairs to haircuts.
STREET VENDORS ACT
Ahmedabad• The municipal law in Gujarat prohibits the hawking of goods
without a licence. The Municipal Corporation is also empowered to
remove any encroachments and obstruction made on the streets.
The Bombay Police Act 1950 empowers the police to arrest hawkers
for obstructing free flow of traffic under sections 102 and 107.

STORY BOARD- preserve or Perish
• Street vendors are a constant presence in our cities,
but are often seen as a nuisance, encroachers on
public space.
• We need to look at their role in our cities and find
efficient and humane systems to include and
integrate them rather than removing them
unceremoniously from our streets.
• Street vendors form a crucial link in the informal
economies that run our cities.
• Historically, bazaars and street shops have defined
commerce and shopping in India with their colourful
displays, variety of goods and their bustling crowds.

Temporary space become permanent shelter no space constrain because street belongs to them !!
• Street vendors are often seen as a nuisance,
encroachers on public space.
• There is a lack of safe and sufficient pedestrian
space, forcing people to walk in traffic.
• Need to prevent overcrowding and unsanitary
conditions in public spaces.
• One time used space become their permanent space
and later they demand for the right at the locations.
• Usage pattern suggest us that there is no way back,
once the single hawker finds a place, there would be
marketplace for sure in the next recent time with
more and more vendors.
