As a UM research institute, we continued to conduct quality collaborative research on Arctic shipping, climate change adaptation, and transport logistics. In addition, we initiated numerous outreach activities, including knowledge workshops, Speaker Series, and International Exchange Program. Moreover, we resumed the Certificate in Logistics (CLog) Program and introduced a new Book Series for Transport Research. We also welcome 2 new staff, 5 new Associates, and 2 new Student Associates. In retrospect, it has been a busy but very fruitful year for UMTI. This newsletter gives you a synopsis on our major activities throughout 2017. Welcome to the UMTI Newsletter!

As a UM research institute, we continued to conduct quality

collaborative research on Arctic shipping, climate change

adaptation, and transport logistics. In addition, we initiated

U of M Symposium (in conjunction with the Royal Society of Canada’s Celebration of Excellence)

NOVEMBER 23, 2017 — Adolf K.Y. Ng was invited as a panel speaker for the U of M Symposium, held in

conjunction with the Royal Society of Canada Celebration of Excellence, themed “Climate Change: From Challenges

to Opportunities”. During the Symposium, Adolf shared his expertise knowledge on the current rail and

transportation disruption to the town and port Churchill and its impacts on livelihood.

UMTI director talks Churchill with CBC:

NOVEMBER 20, 2017 — Adolf K.Y. Ng shared his view with CBC News on the latest lawsuit and development of

the disrupted rail line to Churchill. The future of the rail line to Churchill remains uncertain. Its fate hinges on a

lawsuit between OmniTRAX and the Canadian Federal Government. A new, powerful player has also entered into

the picture: Fairfax Financial Holdings joins two groups representing northern communities and First Nations

which have been trying to purchase the Hudson Bay Railway and Port of Churchill. The full article can be found

UMTI members awarded the U of M/UMFA Merit Awards 2017

OCTOBER 2017 – 3 UMTI members have been awarded the U of

M/UMFA Merit Awards 2017:

- Adolf K.Y. Ng (Combination of Outstanding Teaching, Services, and Research, Scholarly Work and

Creative Activities)

UMTI director appointed senior editor of European Journal of International

Management OCTOBER 5, 2017 — Adolf K.Y. Ng has been appointed as a Senior Editor of

the European Journal of International Management (EJIM), effective October 1, 2017. As

Senior Editor, Adolf will handle submitted papers in the areas of transportation, logistics,

statistics, and IT, as well as getting involved in EJIM’s strategic development. At the same

time, Changmin Jiang, Zaili Yang, and Gordon Wilmsmeier (all UMTI Associates) have

also been appointed to EJIM’s Editorial Board. The journal’s website can be found at:

UMTI director shares knowledge on dry ports at UN think tank meeting

APRIL 21, 2017 — Adolf K.Y. Ng was invited by the UN’s International Think Tank on Landlocked Developing

Countries (LDCC) to share his expertise knowledge on dry ports and regional development for landlocked

developing countries during the LDCC’s conference, “Exploring Connectivity in Landlocked Developing Countries”.

The conference took place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on April 20, 2017.

During the conference, Adolf highlighted the importance of dry ports on

the transforming the economic structure of landlocked countries and

regions, while he also emphasized on the need for a comprehensive

plan for dry port development rather than only the installation of

physical infrastructures.

UMTI CONFERENCES

International Workshop on Transportation, Logistics and

Regional Development

On September 22, 2017, in collaboration with the Shanghai Maritime

University, China (SMU), UMTI co-organized the International

Workshop on Transportation, Logistics and Regional

Development held in Winnipeg, MB, Canada. There were more than

80 participants, including Dr. Digvir S. Jayas, the VP (Research and

International) of UM, Prof.

Youfang Huang, President of SMU, and Mayor Blair Skinner, the Mayor

of the Muncipality of Pinawa, Mr. Shane Li, Directors of North Forge East

and Mr. Alberto Valesco, World Trade Centre Winnipeg. Following the

presentations on shipping and maritime logistics, a panel discussion on

the impacts of transportation logistics on international trade was

arranged.

INTERNATIONAL STUDY EXCHANGE PROGRAM

During June 12-17 2017, UMTI and Asper School of Business co-organized an

8-day International Study Exchange Program – ‘An Experiential Introduction

to The Business Environment and Culture of Canada’. 24 students from Hong

Kong Polytechnic University and Lingnan University in Hong Kong, China and

7 students from Asper School of Business participated in the program. The

Program included business workshops on timely business topics taught by

Asper faculties, technical visits to CN Rail and Manitoba Hydro, social activities,

and interactions with business leaders in Winnipeg (e.g., Hong Kong-Canada

Business Association). Upon its success, UMTI and Asper are planning the 2nd

Study Exchange Program in 2018 Summer which will involve 16 days in

Canada and Hong Kong, China.

CERTIFICATE IN LOGISTICS (CLOG)

Certificate in Logistics Program (CLog) is a program designed for extended education for

persons who wish to enhance their career in the transportation and logistics industry.

This program is offered in coordination with the Red River College (RRC) program –

Transportation and Distribution Management. The courses offered by UMTI match the

curriculum of the Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation (CITT) and are

recognized for the CITT-Certified Logistics Professional (CCLP) designation.

The CLog Program was resumed in September 2017 with 2 courses (Logistics Fundamentals and Legal Issues

in Transportation). 4 more courses (Transportation Policy and Regulations, Marketing Services, Economic

Applications in Transportation and Risk Assessment and Safety) will be offered in January 2018.
