thing you bring will help benefit
the work of Irving Cares. If
each person gives one or more
of these items we’ll be able to
help families who are in need
here in Irving. Monetary dona-
tions are always accepted as
well, and will be used for Irving
Cares as well. However, this is
our way of addressing a specific
need of the organization.
Everyone is invited to attend.
There’ll be plenty of people to
share your meal with, and a lot
of fun to be had. Bring your
family and/or friends to share in
the festivities. You can come as
early or late as you are able and
stay for as long as you like. If
you have questions please con-
tact our office. See you there!
The United Methodist
Men are stirring something
up. That’s right; it’s time for
the batter, bacon and fixins’!
On Tuesday, March 8th
from 6pm-8pm, the men’s
group is hosting its 3rd an-
nual Pancake Supper. This
tradition is connected to
the celebration and festivi-
ties of Mardi Gras, or Fat
Tuesday. On Fat Tuesday,
in other traditions called
Shrove Tuesday, there is a
final feasting of richer, fatty
foods just prior to the be-
ginning of Lent, which is
traditionally a season
of fasting.
So, join us as we bring out
the pancakes, sausage, ba-
con and celebrate with us.
This year’s event is a little
different from other years.
Oh, don’t worry; we’ll
have everything you need
to enjoy a great pancake
meal. Your price of admis-
sion, though, is a jar of
peanut butter and/or
canned meat item. Every-

We teach our children
the value of knowing
“Stranger Danger.” Obvi-
ously, there are safety rea-
sons for doing so. Just the
same, adults employ tactics
to prevent danger and to
ensure protection from
someone who might cause
harm. Again, who can ar-
gue with that? Think,
though, about how strang-
ers are addressed in the
Bible? Aliens, or strangers,
are given to the charge of
God’s people (Exodus
22:21). Jesus of-
fers the parable of
the Good Samari-
tan as an example
of what it means to be a
neighbor to the stranger. 3
John is a short letter with an
acknowledgement of the com-
munity’s treatment of strangers
(Verse 5).
After his resurrection, Jesus
joined two disciples as they
walked to Emmaus. He spoke
with them and taught them, yet
they didn’t recognize him. It
wasn’t until they stopped and
shared Communion with the
stranger that they realized who
he was. Our assumptions
about strangers can often keep us
from seeing who they really are.
We can even forget they are just as
much loved by God as us. Those
words, then, from 3 John can be a
charge (Now would be a good time
to look them up). As a community
of faith, in our worship, activities
and programs how do we view
strangers? Remember, we could be
entertaining angels.
Blessed Beyond Belief,
Sanctus
Latin for “holy.” This is also
a title given to the angelic
hymn of Isaiah 6:3 when the
angels sang, “Holy, holy,
holy.” We also use it in our
communion services: holy,
holy, holy Lord…….
Theological Word To Know
Stranger Danger
Our Social Principles: Women’s Rights We affirm the importance of women in decision-making positions at all levels of Church and society, and urge such bodies to guarantee their presence through policies of employment and recruitment.

continually crumbling
world surrounding Jesus and the disciples in the
days preceding Easter. It is free to attend each
session for conversation, prayer and song. You
can purchase the book for $9.
Session titles include: The Dance; When
Worlds Collide; Dancing with Holes in Your

Almost Tea Time!

The United Methodist Men’s (UMM) group met for their regu-
larly scheduled monthly meeting on Thurs, Feb. 17, 2011 for a
time of fellowship. We shared an opening prayer and followed
with a delicious dinner provided by various members of the
group. The UMM purpose statement was recited and last
month’s minutes were reviewed.
Rev. Fletcher led a meaningful devotional based on a reading
from 1 Kings 19. The devotional recalled Elijah’s experience with God in the “sheer silence.” Like Elijah, we can
get overwhelmed with many of life’s obstacles and sometimes need to step back in silence to meditate our minds,
spirit, and soul so that we can cherish the silence God gives us. Rev. Fletcher also mentioned a book called
“Methodism in Recovery,” which describes how Christians can cherish the “silence” God blesses us daily.
The financial report is current with a balance of 7,797.34, and the quarterly amount has been paid this past
month. Our group agreed to send a financial gift to The Great Days of Service, scheduled for March 18-19 and
25-26. This is a wonderful opportunity to help Irving residents. Information is still available if you are interested.
Our next UMM meeting will be March 17, 2011 at 7pm on Thursday night and any member/visitor are wel-
come to attend. We hope to see you then!

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — While The United Methodist Church’s U.S. membership has
continued to shrink, its growth elsewhere in the world has put it over the 12 million-member
mark for the first time, newly released statistics show. The church's membership in Africa,
Europe and Asia grew from 3.5 million to 4.4 million in the five years ending in 2009, according
to the denomination's General Council on Finance and Administration.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - A short film funded by a United Methodist Board of Discipleship grant won a regional Emmy. The Rev. Steve Horswill-
Johnston, the producer-director, received the award for "Digital Diary: Christine" on Jan. 29. The Nashville/Midsouth Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences gave the honor. Horswill-Johnston, the board's executive director of communications and brand strategy, de-scribed the 12-minute story of a woman trying desperately to save her marriage as a "bring-brain" film. It invites "people to think, to explore and to discuss ... to unwrap Jesus' teachings and see their application in our own lives in a whole new way," he said. The "Digital Diary: Christine" DVD and a 32-page discussion guide may be purchased through Cokesbury or or-
dered online at www.Godfilms.com.

FORT WORTH, Texas (UMNS) — The
Rev. Ken Diehm, a United Methodist pas-
tor famed for his Super Bowl-themed ser-
mons, died of internal bleeding and acute
leukemia on Feb. 19 at Harris Methodist
Hospital in Fort Worth. He was 52.
Diehm, the senior pastor at First United
Methodist Church in Grapevine, gained
denomination-wide attention for his an-

DURHAM, N.C. (UMTV) - When a church ex-
ists in an area where there are fewer than 200
people per square mile, it is considered rural.
There are about 20,000 United Methodist
rural congregations in the U.S.- more than 60
percent of the denomination in the U.S. De-
spite these significant numbers, a 2010 sur-
vey revealed that rural church members often

A Blast From the Past
Youth Group Our youth group has been meeting for
several months. We are very excited to
have the opportunity to be in ministry
with our young people, and trust you are
as well. The group meets every 1st and
3rd Sunday of each month from 4:30-5:45.
It’s a time of fellowship, singing, praying
and much more.
Please know you are an important part of our youth ministry.
So, here are four easy ways you can participate with us:
1) Pray: Pray that our activities will be a way to teach and
share the gospel. Pray for the families and concerns of our
young people.
2) Join Us: We love guests. Sit in on a meeting. Read scrip-
ture or pray with us. It is important for the students to
know their church cares for them.
3) Provide Food: We share a small meal together at each
meeting. Consider preparing a meal or providing snacks for
the group to have.
4) Write a letter of encouragement: Let the students
know you are praying for them. Write a personal note or
card to the group or to a particular student.
Several of our church members have already helped us in differ-
ent ways. For that we say, “Thanks!” We appreciate your care
for our young people and look forward to working
more together.
In Western Christianity, Ash Wednesday marks the first day, or the start of the sea-
son of Lent, which begins 40 days prior to Easter (Sunday are not included in the
count).
Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of
fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. During some Ash Wednesday
services, the minister will lightly rub the sign of the cross with ashes onto the fore-
heads of worshipers.
The Bible does not mention Ash Wednesday or the custom of Lent, however, the
practice of repentance and mourning in ashes is found in 2 Samuel 13:19; Esther 4:1;
Job 2:8; Daniel 9:3; and Matthew 11:21.
