Seemingly innocuous, a piece of paper actually holds a potential far more that its humble outlook. The art of Origami - The art that tells us that if a paper is folded right, with the right steps in place, the possibilities of the shapes it can form are endless. And that’s the premise of MFC.

The belief is that every problem when given the right folds, its solution unfolds. The art of Origami teaches one to come up with the most innovative solutions for seemingly tough problems. Also, it adds the element of resilience in the minds of its practitioners and instils an urge to pursue newer delights.

The Art of Folds, Creases & Shapes.

Page 3: Unfolding Success Stories - Department of Financial …mfc.edu/dfsbrochure.pdfInvestment Management, Project ... Treasury Management Management of Bank Funds Banking ... Kotak Wealth

The Right Folds.

Taking a glance at the global finance scenario, we see a sense of chaos prevails across all economies. Be it the slowing growth of output since 2011, or the possibility of another recession knocking at our doorstep, every single problem is interconnected with several others. Every aspect has far reaching consequences, simply because one problem can’t be evaluated and understood in isolation.

The way to overcome these economic woes is through a much more pervasive policy coordination. These problems beckon a whole new approach. An approach that’s decisively self-assured yet flexible enough to adapt effortlessly and dynamically to the ever changing realms of a globalised economy.

And this is where we see the striking resemblance to the art of Origami. After all, the right steps and right folds in the right direction ensure that a million possibilities open for seemingly impossible problems.

Guest Lectures, Seminars & WorkshopsTo extend learning beyond the classroom teaching, we invite experts from the industry to conduct guest lectures, seminars and workshops on various topics and issues related to finance. At DFS, there is always an endeavour to create opportunities for the inquisitive students to interact and learn from the industry experts. Such interactions also give the prospective recruiters a chance to gauge the student’s knowledge and understanding of the subjects and fundamentals of finance and help them make the best decisions.

PlacementsThe Placement season starts in the month of August with the Placement Team members visiting organizations for corporate presentations and inviting them for campus placements. According to the student’s preferences and the availability of slots, the placement team schedules the whole season. The placements start in the last week of September and the process includes a pre-placement talk followed by the placement process decided by the organization.

InternshipsAs part of the course requirement, at the end of first year each student is required to undertake practical training for a period of two months in various organizations. The internships widen the student’s perspective by providing an exposure to real life organizational and environmental situations.

Live ProjectsThe objective is to encourage the students at DFS to apply their knowledge to practical issues in the industry. If undertaken before the placement or internship season, these projects give the companies an indication of the profile of the students. These projects help the students gain valuable insights into the workings of the industry.

MoU with MCX-SX

Academic learning should be more aligned with the needs of the industry so that students are exposed to the skill set required to meet the demands of the customers and challenges of competition.

This gap can be narrowed down through a coordinated approach ensuring closer interactions among industry, institutions and the academia. The agreement with MCX aims at helping students imbibe practical financial knowledge through means of short term courses and training sessions. A software with ticker application will be installed for research activities to be undertaken by the faculty and students. The association aims at promoting research in the financial market by providing financial, technical and data assistance. The agreement is a step towards fostering a long term association with the organization in the form of guest lectures and internships. As a precursor, a training session was held by MCX-SX at the department explaining its core activities and imparting know how.

Alumni Meet

The 25 year old family of MFC comes together to celebrate Alumni meets across the country. The students, with the constant participation from the alumni side, organise these meets in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

All those who are a part of the Department of Financial Studies are invited to dine and interact with their batch mates, seniors, juniors and professors and re-live the memorable 2 years of their lives that they spent at DFS. Both, the formal and informal elements of these meets make it one of the most awaited events at MFC.

Soft Skills Workshop: 12th August 2011

In the month of August, MFC students got a much needed break from the rigours of Finance to attend a training session on effective corporate communication conducted by our distinguished alumnus Mr J.P Singh. A member of the 1997 batch of MFCians, Mr J.P Singh started his career at Citibank and made his way up the corporate ladder in the banking industry before venturing out on his own and starting his own corporate communication training and consulting firm.

The session was set in motion with an introductory introspective session where the strengths and weaknesses of each participant were gauged and they were asked to rate their communication skills on a scale of 1-10.

The main training session was disseminated via an interactive presentation that went over the various stages of effective communication. The benefits of the workshop were apparent at the culmination of the session when the students took a self-administered test, and again grading and marking them on a scale of 1 to 10 in the area of communication. Communication workshop was not just limited to verbal communication but it was also extended to non-verbal communication.

To touch base with the corporate world Mr Singh peppered the workshop with anecdotes, quotes, articles and videos. The individual attention given to students and Mr Singh’s instant bond with the students was the highlights of the day.

Outbound Training – Kyari, Uttrakhand

The outbound training in the picturesque Kyari village in Uttrakhand was an important highlight of the MFC calendar serving both the role of outdoor excursion as well a team building exercise. Students were randomly distributed into teams that indulged in various tasks that incorporated fun as well team spirit. No doubt it was an experience unmatched and unparalleled.

Sports Activities

The Department of Financial Studies participated actively in “Varchasva”, the annual sports meet of the University of Delhi South Campus. The meets comprising of sports like cricket, football, volleyball and badminton fostered the spirit of group activity in the students, apart from being a breather from the academic regimen.

The month of March also saw the inaugural season of MPL or MFC Premier League, wherein the players were auctioned and traded on the basis of performance points and a round robin cricketing tournament not only provided the thrills but also introduced the students to the exciting world of sports management.
