To meet the growing requirement for faster construction methods to facilitate earlier project handover, BritmetTileform has developed Tactray 90 for use on low andmedium rise buildings.
Replaces timber raftersTactray 90 is a structural metal tray lining systemwhich replaces timber rafters. Each tray side-laps its neighbour to form a unique air sealedsystem running from eaves to ridge fixed directlyto the purlins. Tactray 90 creates a structuralsupport for all types of roof system, without thecongestion or fire risk of a timber construction. It does not affect the practice of tiling or slating,since the installation of underlay, battens andtiles remains identical and externally thecompleted roof displays no visible evidence of its use. The light weight and inherent structuralstrength of Tactray 90 gives good spanningperformance for a variety of roof coveringsincluding fibre-cement slates, heavy stone tilesstanding seam and lightweight systems.
Meets legislationTactray 90 meets the requirements of theBuilding Regulations 2006 and the standardconstruction is BBA certified.
The flexibility of the system facilitates theintegration of insulation zones havingproperties tailored to suit specific needs. In this way, a range of thermal performancecharacteristics can be achieved beyond theminimum requirement under ADL2.

Exceptional roofing performance
Cuts finishing costsInside the building Tactray 90 provides anattractive decorative ceiling without the time, costand vapour-control problems of more traditionalsystems using suspended ceilings. It features apleasing ‘planked’ effect that runs from eaves to ridge, and the optional brilliant white internalfinish gives a bright, attractive interior withstrong reflective qualities and subsequentreductions in lighting costs. Tactray 90 can alsobe used as a soffit for over-sailing eaves detailsprovided that a suitable exterior paint is applied.Note: further colours available upon request.
Air leakage controlThe Building Regulations include a requirementto control air leakage through the buildingenvelope. The current requirement is for amaximum air leakage standard of 10m3/HR/m2
at a pressure difference of 50 pascals. In independent tests carried out by the BritishBoard of Agrement Tactray 90 achieved an airleakage rate of 4.1m3/HR/m2 at 50 pascals - considerably better than the maximum air leakage standards.
High vapour resistanceTactray 90 incorporates a factory fitted sideflange vapour control seal along the entirelength of the tray. This significantly reduces the risk of interstitial condensation within theinsulation zone. Allowing a maximum internalrelative humidity of 86% for an internaltemperature of 20Oc and external temperature of 5Oc.
Better fire protectionFlame-resistant Tactray 90 has a Class O firerating. It provides a non-combustible lining, andcan resist fire penetration from inside to outsidefor much longer than required by the BuildingRegulations.
Whether specified as galvanised or in itsoptional white finish, Tactray 90 helps preventthe spread of flame and continues to supportthe roof covering during evacuation and firefighting. This provides much-improved fire safetyin terms of both life and financial loss.
Secure underliningAs a secure barrier beneath the completed roof,Tactray 90 provides a short-term weatherproofseal against the elements, should the slatesbecome dislodged. It also prevents access byintruders where high value goods are stored. Its continued integrity also offers enhancedsecurity for police stations and prisons, etc.

The system
DescriptionThe distinctive ‘U’ shape of Tactray 90 is rolled to provide underlapping and overlapping legs. The underlapping legincludes a factory-applied vapour control gasket to limit the passage of moisture vapourat the side laps. As each tray is positioned, the underlapping leg is firmly located by a small tab pressed into the overlappingupstand, helping to ensure a flush alignmentto the underside of the trays (see overleaf).
Principles of constructionTactray 90 replaces timber rafters withoutaffecting the installation of underlay, battensand tiles. The trays are secured through thepan to the purlins using washered fixings, and a system of timber counterbattens isincorporated to support the hip and eavesdetails and aid the roofing contractor.
It is recommended that the counterbattens be fixed at centres not exceeding 600mm.Once these are secured, the structure is completed using a conventional felt andslate/tile roof finish.
Key to Tactray 90 system1. Low-density polyethylene filler supplied
by Britmet Tileform, is laid at ridgeand eaves prior to fixing Tactray 90.Alternatively a gun applied mastic may be used in place of the polyethylene foam filler.
2. Galvanised underside as standard. An optional white internal finish isavailable and other colours may bepossible according to quantity. Please refer to Britmet Tileform’s commercialteam for details.
3. 50 x 50mm counterbattens* are secured to the upstands at 600mm centres using self-drilling fixings which must penetrateboth thicknesses of steel in order to ensureadequate pull-out strength.

Loads and spans
Roof loadingsThe primary function of Tactray 90 is tosupport the dead and live loads associatedwith the roof. The dead load is defined asthe weight of the roof covering, insulationzone, timber battens and the like. Live loadsare superimposed loads associated withaccess, wind and snow. Service loads fromheating, ventilation and lighting systemstogether with ceiling loads must also betaken into account where these are to besupported by the Tray.
The weight of roof loads can varyconsiderably from 7-11kg/m2 with a Britmet Tileform steel tile sheet to 80-90kg/m2 with a reconstituted stone slate.Imposed loads are taken as a minimum of0.6 kN/m2 plus any other transient loadssuch as positive or negative wind loads and snow drift.
Spanning performanceTactray 90 achieves excellent spanning performance as indicated in table overleaf. Once all relevant loadings have beencalculated, the table overleaf can be used to determine the gauge of Tactray and the purlin spaces required.
Structural calculationsIn addition to sustaining loads acting on theface of the tray, Tactray 90 can be used totransfer lateral loads. These lateral loads fromwind pressure on the walls of the building aretransferred through the length and/or width ofthe tray. The method of construction is calleddiaphragm or stressed skin.
Britmet Tileform recommends that specific engineering requirements areconsidered at an early design stage.Project specific calculations can beprovided by Britmet Tileform. Thestructural calculations can confirm theperformance characteristics of Tactray 90,relevant to each individual project.
NB - The cost of these calculations can be linked to the supply price of Tactray 90 as long as delivery of materials occurs within threemonths of calculation being provided. Alternatively, payment of calculation costs will become due immediately after the three monthperiod is complete. Payment of calculations will also become due If Britmet Tileform do not secure Tactray 90 order or if the project iscancelled.

Eave and verge overhangWhere the specifier requires a large eave and verge overhanga structural ‘Z’ purlin support can be incorporated to provideadditional strength and stability. Installation procedure
InstallationTactray 90 must be fixed with the non-tabbedunderlapping leg facing the direction of laying, using the following procedure:
1. Establish a setting-out line and apply the low density profile filler or mastic to the supporting steelwork at ridge and eaves. Fix the first full length of Tactray 90, using a minimum of three fixings at intermediatepurlins and five at ridge/eaves/hips/valleys.
CAUTION: When softwood timber purlins are used it is advisable to use five fixings on each purlin to allow for the various quality of commercially available softwood.
2. Lift the next length into position and tightly butt it against the first sheet, ensuring that the underlapping sheet is securely located on the tab provided. Mole ‘C’ clamps or similar should be used at eaves, ridge and intermediate purlin positions in order to clamp together the lengths of Tactray 90. This will ensure that there is no slippage prior to fixing, and assist close alignment of the ribs. If possible, joints should coincide with a main rafter so that they are not
visible from below. This is especially important where the brilliant white internal finish has been specified as a ceiling soffit.
NOTE: It is important to ensure tight buttingof the pans, since failure to do so may result in unsightly wide gaps, which cannot be subsequently rectified and may affect theintegrity of the vapour control layer.
3.Counterbattens are laid over the upstands.These should be a minimum of 50mm x 50mm, be true and relatively knot-free. The fixing centres are as specified by the structural engineer, but should not exceed 600mm. A list of recommended fixing screws is given in this brochure.
4. The TacMat insulating quilt is applied, fittingsnugly into the pan, with sufficient friction tohold it in place on most roof pitches. For added security, self-adhesive insulation pins may be used to minimise the possibility of slumping. These pins should be fixed at 3.0m centres, and the length of spike remaining above the spire clip cut off for safety.

The issueAcross the UK there are quite simply hundredsof schools that have been originally designedwith an asbestos deck sandwiched between theceiling and the roof covering.
Some 50 years later the roof decks and ceilingsare starting to show signs of distortion, pondingand possible risk of collapse.
The challengeTo provide an acoustic ceiling and structural roofsupport system to extend the life of Post WarSystem Built Schools and similar propertiesBritmet Tileform were tasked with designing andsupplying a solution to a prolific problem onseveral schools in the Hertfordshire area.
A test school site was available to BritmetTileform in which we could trial the system and redesign as necessary.
The modelThe schools in question were all of a similardesign and their construction based on typicalHills / SEAC / Clasp systems which included anasbestos deck system.
Typically the main roof supports, usually lattice,beams followed virtually the same design layoutand were modular in their spacings at 8’3”(2.51m) centres. Tactray 90 (perforated) spansbetween the existing lattice beams. The trays arefixed in position with special purpose madeangles and cleats, which are securely fixed tothe existing lattice beams.
The ResultTactray 90 can offer a retro fit system that can combine and offer structural support to the existing roof plusencapsulate the asbestos and at the same time provide a new acoustic ceiling.

Installation, in brief
A structurally engineeredangle is securely attachedto the existing latticebeams. This forms theprimary support for asecond angle to follow.
40mm solid insulationboard is glued/fixed toexisting ceiling, to improvesound and thermalperformance. A secondaryangle/cleat is securelyattached to the first angle.This second angle formsthe mainbearing to supportthe Tactray.
Tacmat insulation andRockwool RW3 acousticboard is pre-installedwithin the Tactray pan. The whole assembly isoffered up and the tray is securely attached to the second angle.Combinations of Tacmatand acoustic board areavailable to providethermal and acousticrequirements.
The Tactray 90 ceilingsystem continues to beinstalled. Consideration forcabling, pipe work andfuture services has beentaken into account. Thesecan be accommodated byusing integral duct trays,which can be accessedquickly for ongoingmaintenance.
The duct trays can beinstalled as often asrequired. They can bebespoke for each project ora modular layout could beestablished. Removablecolour coated cover platesare provided to matchTactray 90.
The remaining exposedlattice beams can beencased with purposemade box flashings, colourcoated to match Tactray.Perimeter flashing or edgetrims can also be provided.

Transport, handling & storage

CDM RegulationsTactray 90 should be specified and handled in accordance with the requirements of theConstruction Design and Management (CDM)Regulations.
Site preparationIt is advisable to ensure that sufficient room isavailable for on-site storage (including bulkyinsulation), and that there is sufficient roomfor the turning and unloading of vehicles.
DeliveryAll deliveries are by road unless otherwisespecified. Off-loading is the responsibility ofthe client.
StorageIf materials are to be left on site for any lengthof time it is important that the products are
stored in their original packing, under coverand in a dry, well-ventilated position. Thepacks should be laid on even ground, havinga slight incline to ensure rainwater run-off.When covering materials, please ensure thatadequate free ventilation has been allowed toprevent condensation. All materials, includinginsulation, fixings, fillers etc., should be keptunder appropriate conditions away from vehicle access roads and building activities, as contamination by lime or cement maycause staining.
LiftingPacks are supplied with timber collars at twometre centres. A crane beam is available forhire if site access and conditions demand it.Full packs weigh 1-1.5 tons (max. weight 2tons), and should always be positioned over arafter to prevent damage to, or collapse of,the purlin system. Remember also to determine that the non-tabbed leg is in thedirection of lay before lifting the Tactray 90onto the roof.
LoadsLengths up to 13.5m are supplied stacked,with two pieces side-by-side, and up to 20pieces in a pack. Orders for packs containingless than 20 pieces may incur a surcharge.Around 1000m2 of Tactray 90 may be loadedonto a typical 12m trailer, assuming alllengths are equal and fill the trailer bed.
Cutting of sheetsAll site-cut egdes should be treated with‘Galvafroid’ or similar cold-galvanising paintaccording to the manufacturers’ instructions.
Tactray 90 can be cut on-site with a nibbler or reciprocating saw and is easy to drill,although care should be taken to preventswarf or cut edges posing an accident threat.
CAUTION. On no account should disccutters be used to cut Tactray 90.

Performance
AuthorityTactray 90 manufacture complies with ISO 9002 (BS 5750) and the finished roofconstruction is BBA certified No 95/3192.
PatentsTactray 90 is patented under patent number2185501 when used in lieu of timber raftersunder felt and tiles. It is not patented whenused horizontally in lieu of cladding rails, or under profiled steel roofing.
CompositionThe trays are roll-formed from either 0.75mmor 1.0mm Fe E 350 G grade steel, galvanisedwith a thickness of coating to Z275 to BS EN10147:1992.
AppearanceGalvanised: minimum spangled, dull metallicfinish for hidden or purely functional use.Painted: Tactray 90 is also available coatedwith a brilliant white 25 micron polyester paintapplied over the primer and galvanising, supplied with a strippable protective film.
CondensationWhen correctly laid and sealed, Tactray 90meets the requirements of BS 5250:1989and approved document F2. Providing theinternal humidity does not exceed the limitsgiven, there will be no significantaccumulation of condensation on the internalsurface. The maximum internal relativehumidity is 86% for an internal temperatureof 20oC and an external temperature of 5oC.
Thermal movementWhen correctly installed using TacMat quilt,and with the insulation provided by the airspaces, slates, tiles, lightweight roofing systemor standing seam, the Tactray 90 should be atambient room temperature. At this temperaturethermal expansion does not present a problem.
Light & optical performanceThe brilliant white inner face of Tactray 90 has a reflectivity index of 79%. A lighting consultant can advise on maximising this high performance.
Fire protectionTactray 90 has been approved to give the following performance:
- Coated steel sheeting, tested to BS 476:Part 5,ignitability test was graded ‘P’ - not easily ignitable.
- Surface spread of flame tests to BS 476: Part 7:1971, gave an index of performance within the requirements of a Class O surface as defined by the current Building Regulations and the Building Standards (Scotland) Regulations.
The material used in the manufacture ofTactray 90 has a Class 1 surface spread offlame to BS476:Part 4 and Class O Fire ratingin accordance with the Building Regulations.Tactray 90 meets the Fire Officers Committee(FOC) rules for use in Class 2 buildings.
Acoustic performanceA perforated version is offered for enhancedacoustic performance. Please consult BritmetTileform’s technical department for further details.
Environmental performanceUnder normal atmospheric conditions, the steeland galvanised finish of Tactray 90 remainsunaffected. Tactray 90 is impervious to insects,birds, vermin, fungal and biological attack. Iflocalised conditions are such that Tactray 90may be exposed to specific liquid, gas or solidchemical pollutants, Britmet Tileform’s technicaldepartment should be consulted.
DurabilityWhen correctly installed by an approvedcontractor in accordance with our instructions,Tactray 90 would be expected to have aserviceable life in excess of sixty years. Thegalvanised coating would typically protect thesteel substrate for at least fifteen years andwhen the polyester finish is specified, theexpected period of protection offered by thecoating system would be over twenty-fiveyears. This anticipated performance would bereduced where the product is subject to highhumidity levels or where exposure to chemicalcontaminants or physical damage occurs.
Corrosion resistanceWhere a softwood timber treated with preservative is used, the preservative manufacturer should be consulted regardingpotential electrolytic corrosion of the galvanised tray or fasteners. The allowablemaximum moisture content of the timber is20%. Run-off water from lead or copper flashings should also be prevented from coming into contact with the galvanised surface of Tactray 90.
MaintenanceNo maintenance is required apart from occasional cleaning of the internal paintedsurface where required. Where a change ofcolour is required an approved proprietarypaint system should be used. Please contactBritmet Tileform’s technical department forfurther details.
