Dr. David S. Dockery, University PresidentDavid S. Dockery was elected the 15th president of Union University on December 8, 1995. Since that time the university has seen an increase in student enrollment from 1975 in the Fall of 1996 to nearly 3000 in 2004. The number of donors to the university has increased from around 2000 to over 3500. The significant increase in giving to the university during this period has included nine of the largest gifts in Union’s long history. Dr. Dockery is providing leadership for a major five year strategic plan called Union 2010: A Vision for Excellence. In 2004 Union successfully completed the Building a Future campaign by raising $63 million.

During his tenure the university has seen a strong increase in commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship. Union has been listed among the top tier institutions in the South each of the past eight years by U.S. News and World Report. Union has also been recognized during this time by Peterson’s Competitive College Guide, the Time/Princeton Review, and Templeton’s Colleges that Encourage Character Development.

The university has added several new degree programs including undergraduate majors in digital media studies, engineering, physics, sports medicine, political science, and ethics, among others, and graduate programs in business, intercultural studies, nursing, and education, including the doctor of education program. Faculty development programs have been greatly enhanced and the breadth of student services have been visibly increased. A new campus master plan has seen the addition of two residence halls, the Miller Tower, Jennings Hall, Hammons Hall, and the Fesmire baseball/softball complex. A branch campus was established in Germantown, TN in 1997, which offers programs in education, business, and nursing.

Dockery is the author or editor of over twenty books including The Holman Bible Handbook, Biblical Interpretation Then and Now, Theologians of the Baptist Tradition, and Shaping a Christian Worldview. In addition he has contributed to more than twenty others including some of the most important reference books of the past decade such as The Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, The Dictionary of Paul and His Letters, The Holman Bible Dictionary, and The Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology. He is the author of more than fifty articles and more than one hundred book reviews. A much sought after speaker on issues of higher education and cultural issues, Dockery has been invited to present lectures at numerous colleges, universities, and seminaries across the country, including Wheaton College, Azusa Pacific University, and Samford University (see the listing of major lectureships/presentations below). He serves on the board of Christianity Today, where he also serves as a consulting editor.

In 2002 Dockery was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is listed in Personalities of the South, Who’s Who in Religion, Who’s Who in America, and the Directory of American Scholars. He serves on the board of directors of several civic groups and local foundations. Dockery also serves on the Board of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, the Board of Reference of Prison Fellowship, and the Consortium for Global Education.

Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1952, Dockery is a graduate of the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Grace Theological Seminary, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Texas Christian University. He holds the Ph.D. in Humanities from the University of Texas system. Dockery and his wife, Lanese, have three sons: Jonathan, Benjamin, and Timothy.

Dr. David Blackstock, Athletic DirectorBeginning his 31th season as athletic director at Union University, Dr. David Blackstock will be leading an athletic department that is currently made up of nine varsity sports and one junior varsity sport. For his efforts as athletic director during the 2003-04 season, Blackstock was voted the TranSouth Conference AD of the Year.

Blackstock spent 17 seasons at the helm of the women’s basketball program at Union, where he compiled a 509-89 overall record, earning his 500th career victory during the 1998-99 season. Numerous accomplishments have been a part of his basketball coaching career including the 1998 NAIA Women’s Basketball National Championship. In addition to the national title, Blackstock was named NAIA Coach of the Year and was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1999.

Blackstock began his campaign at Union University as a baseball player in 1960 where he played for the Bulldogs until 1964. In 1967, Blackstock graduated from Memphis State University with a Master of Education degree and then moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he received his doctorate from the University of Southern Mississippi. Blackstock then returned to Union in 1973 as athletic director and instructor in the physical education department.

Blackstock took over the baseball program in 1977 where he eventually guided the team to a third place finish in the NAIA World Series in 1983, the only season Union has participated in the event. It was at that same time that Blackstock turned his attention to the women’s basketball program. During the Lady Bulldog campaign, Blackstock went to the NAIA District 24 finals 11 times, capturing five district crowns, the 1998 national championship, and 12 conference championships. He guided the team to 10 national tournament berths in his final 12 seasons, participating three times in the title game.

He and his wife, Armita, have two children, a daughter Dixie Blackstock Waddell of Knoxville and a son, Rebel, who will enter Union this fall as a freshman and play baseball.

Ralph Turner, Head Men’s Basketball Coach

Turner, a 1979 graduate of David Lipscomb University, is now in his 11th season as the head coach of the Bulldogs. Coach Turner has led the Bulldogs to six NAIA National Tournaments in his 10 years as head coach. Turner’s career coaching record at Union University is 238-107. Turner has led the Union Bulldogs to three TranSouth Regular Season and Tournament Championships (1998, 1999, 2002) in his 10 years as head coach.

Turner began his coaching career at the junior high and high school level in Georgia and Tennessee before moving to the collegiate level at Oklahoma Christian University. Returning to his Alma Mater, Turner served as an assistant coach at Lipscomb for nine years, winning an NAIA National Championship in 1986. Then in 1994, Turner accepted his first college head coaching position at Union University. In his career, he has coached college basketball’s all-time leading scorer, all-time assists leader, all-time steals leader, and all-time leading shot blocker. He has coached 26 NAIA All-Americans in his career and has had 13 players to take their talents to the professional level.

In addition to his coaching duties at Union University, he serves on the USA Basketball Selection Committee. This committee selects players to represent the United States in the World Games, Pan-Am Games, and other International events. Turner also takes his knowledge of basketball to the national level by serving on the NAIA Championship Tournament Committee that organizes the men’s national basketball tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. Turner also is on the NAIA All-American Committee. He is also the NAIA National Rater for the TranSouth Conference.

Under the guidance of Turner, summer basketball camps at Union University have continued to grow. Through Turner’s hard work and dedication, Union averages over 1,500 boys and girls during the camps.

Turner’s goal for the men’s basketball program is more than concentrating on the score

of a game. His desire is to not only see that his players be a part of the best teams that Union has ever had, but for those individuals to be the best people Union has ever had.

He and wife, Sherrie, have two daughters, Andrea, a freshman at Union, and Allison, a junior at Jackson Christian School.

The Union University Bulldogs are looking to improve on a good season from a year ago. The Bulldogs earned a second place finish in the conference and earned their sixth trip to the NAIA National Tourna-ment in seven seasons. The first object of business for the Union coaching staff was to replace six se-niors lost from 2003-04, including two starters, one of which was an NAIA All-American. Head coach Ralph Turner and his assistant David Niven have added four players to bolster this season’s roster. However, seven returning players, including three starters, are back for Union which gives them a solid, young team to enter the 2004-05 year.

Only two seniors are on this year’s team. Bruno Martinessi and Michael Palmer are back to help lead this team far into the NAIA Nationals. Martinessi has played all four seasons for Union and has averaged 10.8 points and 6.3 rebounds over the past three seasons. Palmer joined Union as a sophomore and has provided the Bulldogs with size and athletic ability off the bench with 7.0 points and 4.8 rebounds in his previous two seasons.

Three juniors appear on 2004-05 roster, one returning player and two transfers. Matt Trammell is now playing his third season with Union. His shooting ability has increased his playing time as he has provided Union with 4.7 points per game and a career .364 (75-206) three point percentage. Transfers Corey Burkett and Rod Ross are two quality additions that will provide immediate impacts this season. Burkett, a 6-foot-3 guard, comes from Wallace State Com-munity College where he averaged 22 points and seven rebounds. Ross, a 5-foot-11 guard, comes to Union from Shawnee Community College where he posted 15 points, six assists, and four rebounds per game.

The sophomore class for Union packs the biggest punch for Union as three of the four sophomores started at some point during last season. Ben Frederick (pictured left) is a returning honorable men-tion All-American while averaging 15.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Marcus Cooper (pictured above) returns at the guard posi-tion after averaging 6.4 points, 3.8 assists, and 3.1 rebounds as a freshman. Pierry Valmera, at 6-foot-8, scored 8.1 points and 5.4 re-bounds as a freshman. Frederick, Cooper, and Valmera were each named to the TranSouth Conference All-Freshman Team. Chris Wil-liams returns after walking on last season and playing in nine games for Union.

Two freshman fill out the roster including Courtney Jones, a 6-5 forward from Newbern, Tennessee, and Jonathan Givens, a 5-11 walk-on from Memphis, Tennessee. Jones is following his father’s (Tony Jones 1979-83) footsteps by playing at Union. He averaged 16 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists per game as a senior in high school. Givens was an All-District as a senior at Germantown High School.

This team is young and extremely talented. However, they will be tested often not only in the tough TranSouth Conference but in the

non-conference schedule. Union plays the defending NAIA National Champions, Mountain State Univer-sity (W. Va.) in a home and home series. Also on the schedule are NAIA national powers, Georgetown (Ky.), Faulkner (Ala.), Oklahoma Christian, and McKendree (Ill.). Union has the opportunity to make a lot of noise and turn heads around the NAIA if they can successfully move through this schedule.

Union basketball looks, from the start, to be set for another run for a conference championship and a trip to the national tournament.

NAIA - National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs.

With its major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to strengthen academic eligibility requirements. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a certain grade-point-average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis.

The NAIA includes more than 60,000 participating student-athletes. The NAIA offers 24 separate championships in 13 sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling. For more information on the NAIA, visit their web site at www.naia.org.

NAIA Champions of Character A Character Development Initiative

Mission StatementThe NAIA “Champions of Character” initiative will create an environment in which every NAIA student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship.

Vision StatementWhen researching the NAIA’s place in the history of sport and higher education, several consistencies are apparent, including its dedication to academic achievement along with athletic excellence. Also apparent is the organization’s role as a trailblazer in providing equal opportunities for all student-athletes. Above all, there is an expectation of ethical behavior and a commitment to scholarship, sportsmanship and leadership.

Throughout its history, the NAIA and its members have used sport informally as a vehicle for character development. Because the athletic arena has become a microcosm of society, the time has come to bring a more formal emphasis to character development on every level and especially in sport. The NAIA “Champions of Character” initiative, through awareness, education and community involvement, will continue to develop an atmosphere of integrity in sport. Character and cooperation will grace our youth as they compete in athletics and life.

Union University men’s basketball expected the 2003-04 season to be one of success as they started the year. Union had mixture of seasoned veterans along with some very talented freshman. The team knew they had the pieces for a run at the conference title, but they also knew that the conference was as tough as always and many things can happen during the course of a basketball season. In the NAIA Preseason Basketball Poll, the Union Bulldogs came in at No.18, so the expectations where there. The season for the Bulldogs started out strong as they opened the season with a six game winning streak. In Union’s non-conference schedule, they battled NAIA powers such like Georgetown, McKendree, William Carey, and Edward Wa-ters. Against those teams, Union posted a 4-3 record. Union then moved their focus to the TranSouth Conference where they maintained a solid position at the No. 2 and finished league play with a 10-4 record, good for sec-ond place. Union ran through the second half

of the season with an impressive eight straight wins, including six straight conference wins. However, Union entered the TranSouth Conference Tournament having lost two straight to close out the regu-lar season. Union lost in the first round of the conference tournament, but still earned a No. 13 seed in the NAIA National Tournament. In this, their sixth trip in seven years, Union lost an overtime thriller to Barber Scotia 61-53 and ended a great season with a 24-10 record.

Union tallied a final record of 24-10 overall for the 2003-04 season. During the year, Union was ranked as high at No. 8 and as low at No. 22. Their final season ranking was No. 13. The Bulldogs never found themselves out of the NAIA’s top 25 during the year.

During the season, several Union players set new records, reached career mile-stones, and earned post season honors. Chima Abakwue set a new Union re-cord for three-pointers made in a career (401), and also for three-pointers made in a season (134). Bruno Martinessi and Will Harris each passed the 1,000-point

2004-05 Cheerleadersmark for their Union careers. In post season honors, Abakwue and Ben Frederick were named TranSouth first team All-Conference performers. Abakwue finished in a close second for confer-ence player of the year. Frederick, along with Pierry Valmera and Marcus Cooper were each named to the TranSouth All-Freshman Team. The NAIA honored Abakwue with third team All-American selection while Frederick earned an honorable mention All-American selection.

Several freshman stepped up and proved their worth to this team and gained valuable experi-ence along the way. This only make the expecta-tions for 2004-05 a little higher.
