Adding Integers
1. If the signs are the same, you add the numbers and keep the sign the same.
Ex: (6) + (5) = (+5) + (+4) =
2. If the signs are different, you subtract the numbers and keep the sign of the biggest number.
Ex: (8) + (+3) = (8) + (+10) =

Subtracting Integers
To subtract integers, you add the opposite.
1. Keep the first integer the same2. Change subtraction to addition3. Change the sign of the second integer4. Use addition rules (same sign add, different signs subtract)
Ex: (8) (5) = (+7) (4) =

Method 1: Integer Tiles
When you use the tile method, the jar should start with a value of zero.First integer Tells you how many sets to put in or take out (+) put sets in () take sets out
Second integer Tells you how many of each tile you need (+) use yellow or unshaded () use red or shaded
NOTE: If you have to take out counters you may need to add ZERO PAIRS!

Method 2: Using Number Lines
Always start on ZERO!!!First Integer: Tells you how many steps to take (+) face positive end () face negative end
Second Integer: Tells you what size step to take (+) walk forward () walk backward
