Used to versus past simple

We use used to + bare infinitive to refer to past habits or states.

He used to swim a lot when he was younger.

In such cases used to can be replaced by the past simple with no change in meaning.

When Ann was young she spent/ used to spend her

summer holidays with her parents.

However , for an action that happened at a definite time in the past we use the past simple, not used to.

He walked to work yesterday.

(NOT: He used to walk to work yesterday)

We also use ‘used to’ talk about past facts, which are no longer true.

He used to live in Lisbon. Now he lives in Munich.
