Used to versus past simple
We use used to + bare infinitive to refer to past habits or states.
He used to swim a lot when he was younger.
In such cases used to can be replaced by the past simple with no change in meaning.
When Ann was young she spent/ used to spend her
summer holidays with her parents.
However , for an action that happened at a definite time in the past we use the past simple, not used to.
He walked to work yesterday.
(NOT: He used to walk to work yesterday)
