Player Profiles – Candidates for Your 2015 Unit Board Unit 487, part of District 20 of the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL), serves members who live in
Clackamas, Columbia, Multnomah, and Washington counties. Its seven Board members, who serve overlapping three-year
terms, work to promote competitive bridge by sponsoring sectional tournaments and educational outreach programs. In
February and March of each year, the Unit replaces two or three retiring Board members with new ones. This year, we are
replacing two retiring members – Nancy Jonske and Katherine Morris – and of the four candidates below, you may vote
for one or two, as you prefer. Ballots and further voting instructions are available at all Unit-area sanctioned clubs, and
your participation is vital to keeping our Unit active and robust. If you have voted already, thank you. If you haven’t,
here’s your opportunity to meet the candidates.
Judy Davis: I was born in Lexington, Kentucky, and grew up in the Bluegrass State, but have
lived in Portland over half my life and consider it home. I came here for a job back in 1978, as an
HR personnel management specialist for the Army Corps of Engineers. Since discovering bridge
after my retirement in 2008, I’ve played at all the local clubs, mostly the Ace and PBC. Now I
want to apply the resourcefulness, organizational skills, and problem-solving techniques I
developed in 30 years of working in HR to make the Unit even stronger. My goals are to help
grow the membership, see an updated directory published, and encourage an environment
of mutual respect among all bridge players in the Unit.
Rick Prouser: I’m a New England native, but have lived in Portland nearly 25 years and
been involved with bridge – off and on – a lot longer than that. In my twenties, I played
frequently in clubs and tournaments and taught some classes, but had to cut back when it was
time to get serious about family and career. I spent 40 years in the insurance sector managing
complex information technology (IT) projects and leading large teams. After retiring in 2010, I
resumed playing frequently and have enjoyed every minute of it – especially getting to know
my fellow bridge players. As part of the Unit Board, I would apply my leadership experience
to helping make the game as enjoyable for everyone as it has been for me.
Jan Clemmons: I grew up in Rochester, New York, learning to play bridge at the kitchen
table. I continued playing through college, at Ohio Wesleyan University, where I earned a math
degree. After marriage, my husband Greg and I traveled the country for many years, where I worked
in various cities as a computer programmer or systems analyst. We finally settled in Oregon and
added two Korean sons to our family. When our boys started school, I began teaching middle-school
math. I retired from that work just two years ago and immediately revived my enthusiasm for
bridge. As a non-life master, I am eager to bring a newer perspective to the Board.
Jonathan Bean: I was born in the Great American Desert, in Omaha, Nebraska. Bridge?
Serendipity. In high school, my buddy brought home a Goren Bridge Wheel. At university I
found the revolving bridge game in “The Pit” of the student center. Later my boss needed a
duplicate partner. I played for a year then got a life, in information technology (IT). Back to
bridge 32 years later, sans job and Wheel. I’ve served on boards of various volunteer
organizations. Not a hefty résumé, but when asked, I said yes. I would continue the good
work of the Unit 487 Board.

SCHEDULE
OBTY publishes on the 1st of February, April, June, August,
October, and December. Submissions
for a given month’s issue are due by the 20th of the previous month.
FROM THE EDITOR
I took on this position with two goals: to get to know more of my fellow players,
and to make this newsletter the most effective it can be. Thanks to the many
Unit 487 members who shared kind words about the previous issue, I’ve met my
first goal already. Thanks to those who offered ideas on how to make the
newsletter even better, I’m getting closer to the second. I hope you find this
issue as much fun to read as it was to write.
IN THIS ISSUE
The sky may be falling, but the show must go on: Learn how a rapid-response
team relocated the Winter KO Sectional without a missed moment of play
(page 3). Results from the Sectional and other tournaments, and big games at
local clubs (pages 4-5). Only 300+ bridge-playing days till the 2015 holiday
parties … but you can enjoy memories from last season’s events right now
(page 9), thanks to the photographic artistry of Sam Jones. It’s at the end
(page 10), but it’s vitally important: the March 29 Board election party at the
Ace of Clubs. Have YOU voted yet?
FROM YOUR UNIT BOARD
At the January meeting, we reviewed preparations for the Winter KO
Sectional (little did we know!) and the 2015 Board elections, discussed updating
the unit roster and ACBL privacy issues surrounding that, explored ideas for
OBTY, and designated the Oregon Food Bank to receive our share of the
charitable contribution that the District makes from Oregon Trail Regional
proceeds.
We’ll hold our next meeting Wednesday, March 11, 5:00 p.m., at the Ace of
Clubs. The meeting is open to everyone, and we welcome your questions and
feedback.
MEMBER NEWS
Owners until recently of the Portland Bridge Center (now Portland Bridge
Club), Ouida McCullough and Paul O’Brien are traveling up a storm and will be
spending part-year in Victoria, B.C. (still part-year here), where Paul’s family
has roots. Ouida will write a cookbook, Paul will continue directing at ACBL
sectionals and regionals, and Kelsey will enjoy a well-deserved retirement. No
longer responsible for helping to calm players at stressful moments during
bidding or play of the hand, he’ll get into the shape of his life running at an off-
leash park just down the block from Paul and Ouida’s Victoria home. You can
reach Ouida at [email protected] and Paul at [email protected].

Scramble for the Sectional: Kliever Roof Caves In. Now What?
It’s Tuesday, January 20, 10:30 a.m., less than 72 hours
until the Winter KO Sectional at Kliever Armory, when
Tournament Manager Alan Johnson gets a phone call: A
portion of the armory roof has collapsed, and we need a
new place to play. Thirty-six hours later, we have one,
contract signed and sealed, at the Red Lion Vancouver at
the Quay. Doors open as scheduled on Friday, January 23,
and the first of hundreds of bridge enthusiasts from Unit
487 and beyond arrive to spend a day, or two, or three at
the Red Lion – focusing on the game that intrigues us and
not on how we wound up playing it there.
But how we wound up playing the Winter KO Sectional at
the Red Lion had its own moments of intrigue. Just 15
minutes after news of the Kliever cave-in, Alan was told
the nearby Jackson Armory was available. So he, Board
President Nancy Jonske, and other Board members – along
with Chris Wiegand at PBC, Rich Carle at Vancouver
Bridge Club, Staci Christian at the Ace, and Jan Yocom,
who manages private-club games – scrambled to get the
word out.
When they were nearly done, however, they learned there
had been a miscommunication earlier between the two
armories, and Jackson wasn’t available after all. So they hit
the phones seeking another venue that could meet our
needs. They found the Red Lion several hours later and
scrambled (again) to get the word out (again) and to plan
for notices to be posted at both Kliever and Jackson
redirecting players who might show up at either of those
venues. Because of the extraordinary time constraints, they
had to do all this before a contract was finalized, which –
thanks to a glitch or two in price negotiations – took until
late Wednesday.
But it was all very much worth it, say Alan and Nancy,
thanks to the hundreds of people who attended, played their
hearts out, maybe picked up a silver point or two, and had a
wonderful time. Will the Red Lion – or another venue
besides Kliever – work for future tournaments? If you have
ideas, let the Board know. The Spring KO Sectional starts
May 29, which could well arrive before Kliever is fully
repaired.
THE 14TH
TRICK, METRO PORTLAND’S
NEWEST BRIDGE CLUB, HAS A NEW
LOCATION AND A NEW GAME
Originally on East Burnside, we’ve moved a few blocks further east, to 2937A Northeast Glisan, just above Kern’s
Kitchen. We hold an open, stratified game each Tuesday at 1:15 p.m. and a (new!) 0-200 game each Saturday at
10:00 a.m. We provide electronic scoring tablets, bidding boxes for both right- and left-handed players, and the restaurant
downstairs has a tasty selection of food and drink. On-street parking is plentiful and Tri-Met Bus 19 stops nearby.
PLEASE NOTE that entry is by way of an outside staircase.
Our space is limited, which is perfect for getting to know fellow players but does require some advance planning. So let us
know if you’re coming: Go online to register as a member and book a spot, or call Jonathan Bean at the club. Cost to play
is $6/person.

It’s Time to Update the Unit 487 Roster. We want
this next roster to be current and comprehensive, and
need your help. Watch for instructions and forms
available at the clubs over the next few weeks. If you
have questions, ask the club director. Alternatively, you
can update your roster information online: go to
www.acbl.org, click MyACBL, enter your login and
password and scroll down. Either way, make sure that
the information you want in the roster will be in the
roster – and outdated information or information that
you don’t want in the roster, won’t. It’s the best way
potential partners have of reaching you, and you them.
