Roberto Fernandez Unit 6 PHDs Period: 5 1/22/2013

    PHD 11-3

    1. The author believes that the two most important habits to teach children is that of industry andregular application to business. The author believes that these habits can be even more important

than the childs schooling and he believes it can help the growth of urban America since these habits

are what ultimately will lead America towards industrialization when the children become adults and

    leaders.

    2. The author of this article believes that some useful skills that should be instilled in boys while theyare growing up are habits of donating to institutions of benevolence and to make sure that what

they donate is something that actually affects them, not solely the money they have left over. The

author also believes that children should be taught the value of money and how to properly handle

their money as well as reinforcing the idea that being idle is bad and time should not be wasted. On

the other hand, the author uses just 3 small paragraphs to explain the duties that should be taught

to daughters and that is because he believes that the only important things that a woman should

know is how to take care of her household, which is a perfect example of the ideas of republican

    motherhood.

    PHD 11-6

    1. According to Harriet Robinson, the primary reason why women worked in the mills was to providesome extra money which could be used to give their son or brother and education and therefore a

profession. She goes on to state that some women even gave an education, through their salary at

the mill, to men whom were not even a relative of theirs.

    2. Robinson describes the life of a mill girl as having extremely long hours, as much as over 14 hours aday, and some, who had homes, would work from 8 to 10 months of the year and spend the rest of

the year either teaching or doing something else away from the factory, Robinson states how they

had a much better time in the factories than the average mill worker. Robinson also believes that the

strike was a failure since their demands were not meant but it was the first time that a woman spoke

in public in Lowell and this could have set precedents for the future strikes.

    PHD 11-8

    1. In this excerpt, Emerson suggests that the most important thing that we should conserve is ourindividuality and sovereignty. Emerson believes that rather than follow an objective doctrine, we

should follow a subjective set of rules that we hold within ourselves. Emerson believes that we

should only pay attention to what concerns us rather than what others may think and therefore

believes that not all social norms should actually be followed if we believe otherwise.

    2. Emerson proposes various ideas that could be considered very unorthodox. Above all, Emersonbelieves that one should not follow the holy doctrine since you have a doctrine within yourself and

that is the one that you should follow. Emerson also believes that one should not follow the hive

mind and donate to every charity they see and rather, they should donate to the people that they

believe they owe the right to give money to, rather than to people that do not concern them.
