Page 22: Unit 8, Book 1 Romantic stories

Elizabeth Barrett Browning In 1806, Elizabeth Barrett was born at Coxhoe Hall,

England. She was educated at home, learning Greek, Latin, and

several modern languages at an early age. She spent the majority of her time in her room writing

poetry. In 1844, Robert Browning wrote to Elizabeth admiring

her Poems. In 1846, Elizabeth and Robert were secretly wed and ran

Say over again, and yet once over again •That thou dost love me. •Though the word repeated •Should seem "a cuckoo-song," as thou dost treat it, Remember, never to the hill or plain, •Valley and wood, without her cuckoo-strain •Comes the fresh Spring in all her green completed, Belovèd, I, amid the darkness greeted •By a doubtful spirit-voice, in that doubt's pain •Cry, Speak once more--thou lovest! Who can fear •Too many stars, though each in heaven shall roll, •Too many flowers, though each shall crown the year? •Say thou dost love me, love me, love me--toll •The silver iterance!--only minding,• Dear, To love me also in silence with thy soul.

Page 24: Unit 8, Book 1 Romantic stories

How do I love thee? •Let me count the ways. •I love thee to the depth and breadth and height •My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight •For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.• I love thee to the level of everyday's •Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. •I love thee freely, as men strive for Right; •I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.• I love thee with the passion put to use •In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.• I love thee with a love I seemed to lose •With my lost saints, -I love thee with the breath, •Smiles, tears, of all my life! - and, if God choose, •I shall but love thee better after death.

Love Letter by Robert Browning to Elizabeth Barrett

January 10th, 1845 New Cross, Hatcham,Surrey I love your verses with all my heart, dear Miss Barrett, -- and this is no off-hand complimentary letter that I shall write, --whatever else, no prompt matter-of-course recognition of your genius and there a graceful and natural end of the thing: since the day last week when I first read your poems, I quite laugh to remember how I have been turning again in my mind what I should be able to tell you of their effect upon me…
