Design development

Our in-house design team is responsible for developing the initial concept designs of a project into detailed production designs which can then be built and installed within the given budgets.

Materials, assemblies, fixings, structures and prototypes are assessed to ensure practicable and safe solutions whilst retaining the aesthetic intent of the client and designer.

We use the latest computer aided design and analysis software – AutoCAD 3D, Rhino 3D, Solidworks and Creative Suite. This ensures all designs, mechanisms, principals and dimensions are proven prior to manufacture and ensures the

accurate incorporation of our thematic elements and other contractors’ spacial and technical requirements. It also guarantees accurate dimensional and template information to fit-out, base build and graphic contractors.

We also undertake design assessment for the purposes of value engineering and economies can often be found that do not adversely affect the final product or visitor experience.


Design and build

We also provide a complete turnkey package of project design and build services. More and more of our clients are finding that a combined package from one source offers substantial cost and time savings, especially beneficial on fast track projects.

Our turnkey service includes concept design, research and interpretation, design development, production design, off-site construction and fabrication, transportation and full fit-out installation.

Whether your project is a commercial or retail fit-out, an individual gallery or a complete museum, a visitor attraction, a science centre or a theme park project, we have all the major elements

of the total package under our one roof. Our extended family of proven and specialist companies includes audio-visual hardware and software specialists, lighting and electrical specialists and graphic production houses, who all work closely with us as an integral part of our integrated team approach.

Our joinery department provides everything from bespoke cabinet and caseworks, through to structures, facades and setworks for theming projects and bespoke joinery for museums and visitor centres.

Joinery and finishing

Backed up by our CAD designers, CNC routers, Corian forming ovens and our 10,000 sq ft workspace, there is little our joiners cannot create using either traditional bench skills and traditional materials and hardwoods, or by using cutting edge techniques and modern solid surfacing materials to create contemporary organic or geometric designs.

Our finishing department can apply numerous paints, lacquers and finishes. We have two fully

extracted paint booths and can offer high and low pressure spraying along with traditional techniques such as marbling and lacquer work.

We pre-fabricate and assemble off-site as much of our large scale constructions as possible. This ensures that what goes to site fits together, reducing site time, and allows clients and designers to see nearly completed items before site installation.

We work in a wide selection of materials including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, iron, brass and copper. We have full in-house rolling, folding, bending, cutting and TIG welding, MIG welding and braising.

Our versatile team can, at any one time, be producing huge structural supports for large scale thematic facades, recreations of industrial or military machinery, key metallic elements and structures for our interactives, bespoke mounts for

high value artifacts or more intricate items such as highly ornate replica chandeliers, weather vanes or metallic replica artifacts and props.

Many members of the department are coded welders who have worked on substantial and exacting structures and complex forms in highly demanding interior and exterior environments. Additionally our in-house services are backed up by laser cutting, water jet cutting and powder coating facilities.

Our metalwork department has a wide skill base, staffed by time served welders and fabricators, architectural and sculptural forgers and metal smiths.

Paragon is well positioned to undertake the role of main, or principal contractor. We are able to provide more services in-house than any other contractor, meaning efficient coordination and project management and greater cost-effectiveness.

When necessary we support our own team with a number of tried and tested subcontractors, who are themselves leaders in their specific fields. Audio-visual hardware suppliers, software developers,

decorators, electricians, flooring companies, graphic designers, printers, lighting designers and showcase manufacturers are just a few of the specialist subcontractors we work with on a regular basis.

When we combine these services together with our own we are able to offer a seamless fit-out service which is cost-effective and in need of minimal coordination.

Increasingly clients and designers are asking us to undertake a complete fit-out package, where we take charge of the entire project.

Our in-tank aquarium processes produce hyper realistic and non-toxic theming which is hand-crafted to produce coralline rock walls and coral outcrops which can be used to enhance the overall tank, but also conceal in-tank pipe work and life support services.

Much of the theming is hand sculpted and moulded in our workshops utilising specialist marine accredited materials and then taken to site for the in-tank installation and finishing. This unique process is preferred on many projects, over the ‘sprayed rock’ techniques, as it reduces site time and disruption and minimises curing and off-gassing time within the tanks.

On large scale tanks and also on dry-side and exterior projects, we utilise our ‘concrete’ spraying skills. A special mix material is wet sprayed on to pre-formed structural armatures and ‘live’ sculpted

by our team. Numerous highly realistic and highly durable rock, stone, brick or architectural forms can be created with this process. The material can be re-pigmented and also post painted to give the desired finish and colours. This process can also be used to create structural, load bearing and self supporting structures as required.

Recent projects have included the theming of the largest privately owned aquarium in the UK at Heron Tower in the City of London, containing 1,200 fish; in-tank giant mangrove tree buttresses and rockwork walls at The Deep in Hull, one of the world’s most spectacular aquariums; the creation of a huge dry-side subterranean cave complex and extensive in-tank theming at Istanbul’s new national aquarium and extensive rockworks at Cairo’s new Children’s Civilisation and Creativity Museum.


We pride ourselves in producing artificial rock-scapes and coral-scapes which replicate the look and feel of the natural environment.

We have produced thousands of interactive displays for many well-known museums and visitor centres and have developed an unbeatable reputation for providing technically innovative and cost-effective hands-on exhibits. Our inventive interactives invite visitors to look, touch, twist, pull, push, turn, pump, jump and learn. They are designed to be robust, tough and reliable.

We are also the only interactives company in Europe with in-house joinery, scenic, theming, prop making, graphic design and model making all under the same roof. This enables us to create interactives which are very cost-effective and whose design and development can be closely and efficiently integrated into a fit-out programme.

Our in-house interactive department consists of design development, electronic design and production, process control and programming, metal fabrication and welding, mechanical and electro-mechanical engineering, CNC milling, routing and laser cutting. Our internal electronics department offers technically advanced design, development and manufacturing services covering software, programming, PCB manufacture, electro-mechanical control systems and electronic display and AV (both utilising ‘off

the shelf’ solutions and creating bespoke control and interfaces). Our team is used to liaising closely with AV, software and other technical contractors to ensure compatibility and integration of systems.

Throughout the build stage we ensure the highest levels of build and finish. As we do not rely on sub-contractors for the majority of our work, we can ensure consistency with quality, fit, finish and schedule. We ensure team continuity throughout the project. The design and build team will also be part of the install and commissioning team.

It is paramount that the client team who will be operating the interactive areas have an understanding of the technical aspects and maintenance of the displays. We supply detailed O&M manuals and undertake training with the client team at installation stage to ensure efficient hand over of the finished project. We warranty all our work for a period of 12 months which covers all support, site visits, parts and labour. If required we can extend this warranty period or enter into an on-going maintenance contract to ensure that the visitor experience continues to be of the highest standard.

Nothing can convey physical and spacial reality, and generate interest and understanding, quite like a scale model.

Model making

We have been making models for architects, museums, developers and engineers for over 25 years. Regardless of size and complexity we can produce anything from a basic white card model through to a fully detailed scale model.

We can work from a simple sketch through to CAD based plans and elevations. Our in-house processes include laser cutting, laser etching, CNC machining, resin casting and vacuum forming. We work in a wide range of materials including; timber, acrylics, metals, foams and composites.

By combining our other in-house specialisms of electronics and programming, models can be animated with LED lighting, moving parts and cyclic routines, controlled remotely through a PC or custom made control unit or interfaced with AV presentations.

We can provide plinths for your model in various finishes and styles, with glass or acrylic covers. To extend the life of your model we can offer a renovating and repair service. We also provide a crating service for worldwide transportation.

Super-sized or pint-sized, coloured or monochrome, real-life or fantasy. In Paragon’s props workshop and sculpting studios almost anything is possible.

Our prop makers have strong backgrounds in theatre, film and television and we also understand and can create, the exceptional quality required when we are contracted to produce replicas for museums and the heritage industry.

Our sculptors work with many different materials including clay, polystyrene, urethanes and concrete. We produce casts in GRP and silicon and we also employ colourists, costumiers and jewellers. We enjoy working with clients from all disciplines and from all over the world. We also work with world

renowned artists and sculptors to create one off works of art, editions or public art installations. We work with blue chip corporate clients to bring branding to life and we work with creative agencies to create that wow factor for a major event or launch. We have produced props for many well-known television series.

All members of our team have genuine hands-on experience and they will be responsible for design development, site surveys, setting out, manufacture, and installation. Constant monitoring ensures that budgets are adhered to and that deadlines are met.

The sooner that we can get involved in a project the better, because scenic, interactive and construction costs can be greatly reduced if we are able to integrate with designers, architects and other specialist contractors at the earliest opportunity.

Our project management services range from stand-alone scenic, model making, or interactives contracting, through to undertaking the role of a specialist sub-contractor, a main contractor, or as the principal contractor.

We have the skills and experience to ensure the necessary compliance with CDM regulations and the first-hand knowledge of the health and safety implications of design decisions.
