    Speaking Practice

    A. Short presentation.Presentation tips:

    During the preparation time (10 minutes) make sure you:

    - have clearly understood the task- organise your talk with an introduction and conclusion, and make the

    structure explicit when giving the talk, in order to show some evidence ofplanning.

    - use specific reasons and examples to support your argument

    - express yourself clearly and coherently by using relevant vocabulary andstructure range, target language pronunciation and intonation

    - make good use of linking words

    - avoid lexical repetition whenever lexical substitution is possible and do

    not repeat ideas- approach the task as if giving a presentation in a business environment.

    Choose to present on one of the topics below:

    1. There are few problems to be anticipated when thinking about setting up

    ones own business.

    2. International trade is full of risks.

    Assessment:

    You may want to use the Speaking Test Assessment Gridto assess the presentations

    made by your colleagues.

    Does the speaker show a clear understanding of the task?

    Is there an appropriate structuring of the presentation?

    Does the speaker develop ideas rather than repeat them?

    Are the ideas clearly expressed and easy to understand?

    Does the speaker perform in a clear and natural manner?

    Is appropriate signposting and linking language used?

    Does the speaker use relevant business terms?

    Does the speaker use the appropriate rhythm, pronunciation andintonation?

    Is the presentation of an appropriate length?

    B.Interaction

    During the interaction (up to 5 minutes) make sure you:

    - are ready to sustain interaction and show sensitivity to turn-taking

    whenever the examiner signals it

    - respond adequately to the examiners questions by using specific reasons

    and examples to support your argument- take into account the examiners prompts meant to extend the discussion

    - express yourself clearly and coherently by using relevant vocabulary and

    structure range, target language pronunciation and intonation- make good use of linking words

    - know how to manage your hesitations

    - approach the task as if in a real business situation

    Get ready to interact on one of the following topics:

    I. Entrepreneurship

    1. What are successful entrepreneurs like?

    2. What do you understand by A man is known by the company he organizes?

    3. What characterizes entrepreneurial culture around the world?

    or

    II. International Trade

    1. Why do countries trade?

    2. Which are the most frequently used terms of payment in international

    transactions?

    Tips:

    cash in advance of the shipment or provision of the shipment (this is the

    most secure form of payment for the exporter; however, it is the least

    appealing to the buyer)

    letter of credit (it serves as the buyers promise to pay)

    documentary credit (this payment method allows the exporter to ship

    goods to the buyer while retaining the title documents until the buyer

    pays for the goods or provides an acceptable bill of exchange)

    3. Why do most governments impose tariffs and/or quotas? (for more

    information on this topic go tohttp://www.globalization101.org/issue/trade/12.asp).
