Sunday, October 5

17th Sunday after Pentecost, World Wide Communion Sunday

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:17-26

Sermon: “Why Communion?”- Rev Diane

All across the world, Christians gather this day for communion.

No two services will be exactly the same...bread or wafer? Juice

or wine? Big chalice or little cups? Standing? Kneeling? Sitting?

Is there a wrong way to celebrate the Lord’s Supper? According

to Paul’s letter, apparently there is!

Music: 8:00 Chancel Choir 10:15 Guitars

Sunday, October 12

18th Sunday after Pentecost

Scripture: Matthew 6:16-21

Sermon: “The Stuff of Life: Redefining Treasure”

Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be

also.” If our treasure is indeed our time, money and energy, are

we making a good investment of our treasure?

Music: 8:00 Chancel Choir 10:15 Worship Band

Sunday, October 19

19th Sunday after Pentecost

Scripture: Matthew 6:19-24

Sermon: “Unintended Masters”

Jesus warms us that it is impossible to serve two masters. How

do we know whether we are serving God or gods?

Music: 8:00 Chancel Choir 10:15 To Be Determined

Sunday, October 26

20th Sunday after Pentecost, Baptism Sunday

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:4-13

Sermon: “Treasures Among Us” - Rev Diane

Every once in a while, we get a glimpse of the truth that we are

part of something much bigger than ourselves alone. Thanks be

to God!

Music: 8:00 Chancel Choir 10:15 Handbells

An Invisible Thread: The True Story of an 11-Year-Old Pan Handler,

a Busy Sales Executive and an Unlikely Metting with Destiny

By: Laura Schroff & Alex Tresniowski Category: Social Action

Laura Schroff was a successful ad sales representative in Manhattan. Maurice was a homeless 11-year-old pan handler...he asked for change, she kept walking. Then, something stopped her, and she went back. She continued to go back again and again, forming a friendship that has spanned over three decades and brought life to an overscheduled professional and hope to a desperate boy.

If you’d like to participate, pick up a reading list in the library, read a book from each category & return your completed form in July for recognition! Many books on the Reading List are in the adult library, just off Fellowship Hall.

Last year the EPH Board & Salvation Army

approved expanding the scope of our

transitional housing program to include

long-term supportive housing. The

“supportive” refers to the case management

we provide in addition to the housing support.

This expanded scope provides opportunities to

help more homeless families currently on our

waiting list.

On target with our 20/20 vision, EPH has

leased its first apartment for the Long-Term

Supportive Housing Program. On Aug. 15,

The Salvation Army placed our first family in

the program. The mother & her 4 children have

been separated from the father for 3 years.

Within the last year, the family has been liv-

ing with friends and family and unfortunately,

they haven't been able to live in the same

home together. Now, all living under one roof,

the family is happy. The 3 oldest are enrolled

in school & the youngest is in Head

Start. Mom is a hard worker &

looking for employment that will

provide a more sustainable income.

During an Advent class last year, a number of people were looking for a next step to pursue giving more of ourselves. In reading the book “Christmas Jar” by Jason Wright, which is available in our church library, the “Treasure Jar” project began.

We all have loose change—in our pockets, purses, and floor of the car. Now you will have a chance to use that change to help others in need. No need to write a big check ~ just collect your loose change.

Treasure Jars will be available in the narthex on October 12. When your jar is full, bring it back to church and it will be shared anonymously with someone in need.

ALL jars must be returned

by December 7.

Sunday Volunteers...

There are many opportunities for YOU to say, “YES!” and fill in some of the blanks—this month

and in the months to come! Contact the church office: 494-4549 or [email protected].

St. Paul's United Methodist Church

Pipe Organ update

Questions and Answers

In July, our finance committee met and voted to re-initiate the pipe organ committee to work on a move ahead

plan to repair our pipe organ. Monies given over the last 7 years to the pipe organ fund had increased that fund

to 58% percent of the anticipated cost of the basic repairs. Additionally, during the capital fund initiative, some

givers indicated that they wanted to contribute to the pipe organ if the repairs were going to move ahead in the

near future. The finance committee voted unanimously to ask the pipe organ committee to update the bid, seek

additional donations over the next months for full payment or alternatively, internal or external financing will

be arranged. We are pleased that to date, we have received gifts and pledges that now put us at 74% of the

needed funds!

Weren't some repairs already done to the pipe organ? Yes. In 2007 our pipe organ committee had an evaluation done of our pipe organ, gathered the history of our

instrument, and received bids from three different companies for the needed repairs. Phase 1, the replacement

of blowers, was necessary to do immediately. Money was raised to cover phase 1 and to establish a fund in

preparation for the remainder of the work needed. The Salzman pipe organ company was hired, performed the

work and has continued our regular maintenance. In addition a memorial gift was received to add a

Zimbelstern, which Salzman also installed.

So what needs to be done now? Basically the insides of the console of the organ need to be removed and

replaced. It is anticipated that we will be without the instrument for approximately 6 to 8 weeks; likely early in

2015. Much more detailed information about the project is provided in the complete bid found in the narthex.

How much will it cost? The updated bid has a cost of 54,675.26 for the basic work. This does not include the

cost of the licensed electrician. The bid also includes other “desired but optional at this time” work totaling

approximately $10,000.

How can I help make this happen? If you would like to make a pledge or donation to this project please fill

out a pipe organ gift card found in the narthex or speak with John Gilman, Rob Stevens or Rev Diane. Gifts

can also be made in honor or memory of a loved one and will be honored in that way as appropriate.

How can I find out more information? The detailed bid and the history of our instrument can be found in the

narthex. Other informational opportunities will be announced as the work moves ahead. Also, our pipe organ

committee co-chairs are happy to answer any questions. We are also making plans for musical celebrations

when the work is completed!

Our congregation is privileged to have such a fine instrument for leading worship. We are excited about a

console rebuild that will provide for many years to come!
