Set up on well* began drillingDrilled to 130 feet, began setting casing. 7x20' lengths of 6" diameterthreaded steel casing. Drive shoe.Drove 120' of casing, stopped for the day.Drillers arrive, welded 9' section of leftover casing.Cement arrivedDrove casing to 125 feet. Set packer at 124 feet, tried to grout butstones in cement caused pump to seize. Took pump apart, cleaned,reassembled. Tried to pump screened cement but pump seized again.Cement truck left. Took pump apart, couldn't reassemble.Left for the day.Drillers arrive.Completed presure grouting 25 bags of cement. No sign of it at thesurface. Pulling packer, cement on 2" pipe, 50' b.g.l. Hit cement at73' b.g.l. when lowering bit into holes. Cut off 2' of casing, finalstick up of 2 feet. Casing to 125 feet.Completed drilling to 175 feet.Completed developing well for two hours.

ROCK QUALITY DESIGNATION (RQD) - DEERE (1986)

In order to provide a simple and direct means of indicating rock-mass properties,Deere (1986) developed the Rock Quality Designation (RQD). The RQD is based on amodified core recovery procedure which, in turn, is based indirectly on the number offractures and the amount of softening or alternation in the rock mass as observed in therock cores from the borehole. Core recovery is the ratio of the length of core recovered tothe length drilled (i.e., no recovery = 0 and full recovery = 100). Instead of counting thefractures, an indirect measure is obtained by summing the total length of core recovered bycounting only those pieces of hard and sound core which are 10 cm (4 in.) or greater inlength and dividing that sum by the total length of that run.

RQD should not be applied to core less than 5.4 cm (2 in.) in diameter as a falseRQD may be obtained because smaller cores can be frequently broken during the coringoperation.

Care must be taken when removing the core from the core barrel. If a core isbroken by handling or during drilling, the fresh broken pieces are fitted together andcounted as one piece.

Some judgement is necessary in the case of thinly bedded sedimentary rocks andfoliated metamorphic rocks. The method is not so exact in these cases as it is for igneousrock, thick bedded milestone, sandstones, etc. However, this procedure has been appliedsuccessfully even for shales, although it is necessary to log the core immediately uponremoving them from the core barrel before air-slaking and cracking can occur.

This procedure obviously penalizes the rock where recovery is poor. This isappropriate because poor recovery usually reflects poor quality rock. However, poor drillingtechniques and equipment can also cause poor recovery. It is for this reason, that properequipment and procedure along with competent supervision of the drilling procedure areimperative.

As simple as the procedure appears, it has been found that as an indicator of generalquality of rock for engineering purposes, the numerical value of the RQD is more sensitiveand consistent than gross percentage core recovery.

In this case, the core barrel was advanced 185 cm with a total recovery of 176 cm.However, due to fractures, soft zones, etc., the modified recovery was 132 cm. Thistranslates to RQD of 71, which can be used as a modifier in the geologic description of therock, which in this case would be Tair".

On August 27, 1975. an pn-slte industrial hazardous wastesurvey was conducted at the Novak Disposal Site In SouthWhitehall Township, Lehigh County, for the purpose of determin-ing if the operator accepts or has accepted any type ofhazardous waste in the recent past.

Mr. Novak stated that he had not received any of thematerials on the hazardous waste list with the exception ofroad oil. He Indicated that over the past years he had usedapproximately 100 gallons of drain oil per year for dustcontrol on his main entrance road. The source of this materialwas from his son-in-law's ssrvice station and was obtained fromdraining the motor crankcases of vehicles. The basicconstituent of waste received at the ilovak Disposal Site waspaper and wood wastes and approximately 30% of the total volumeof material received. The balance of the waste consisted ofgrass, grass clippings, wood clippings and domestic garbage.
