and 1095 Skagit, defining ways to fully nourish all our children so they will grow and thrive. We will continue to invite members of our community to help us identify areas where we can provide critical support.

This work doesn’t change who we are. My hope is that our planning will help better define the value of United Way in Skagit County, so that we can inform the community on the best way we can help serve all the people in our community.

Our mission is to focus the COMMUNITY’S investment to create sustainable, positive change in people’s lives. United Way can have the greatest impact on our communities by being much more strategic and deliberate in how we work. If we are going to advance the common good, we have to focus our energies on those areas that will lead to significant, lasting change.

I am particularly proud of our efforts in the strong collaborations already underway, such as in the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee, the Children’s Council,

From the President

From the Executive DirectorUnited Way does the critical but largely invisible work required to reach community goals. We recruit people to the cause; get commitments for action, and pull together the expertise and resources that get it down. In spite of a challenging economy, Skagit County residents and businesses continue to support their community through United Way. In 2012, our Campaign Goal was 10% MORE! We asked people if they couldn’t give just 10% more this year to help others; if they have never given, could they give $10.

We raised over a Million Dollars – from thousands of individuals and over 60 businesses. At the same time, thousands of hours were

volunteered during Days of Caring to help our partner agencies in very specific and necessary ways.

People help through United Way because they realize that we are the unifying thread, working with many agencies, businesses, and government to advance the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for all. We look forward to our 50th year of serving Skagit County.

2012 Board of Directors

Given to recognize Distinguished Service, The Ted Reep Award is named for one of our founders and is the highest tribute given by United Way.

Marie Erbstoeszer, the 2011 award recipient, presented the 2012 award posthumously to Jim Keane, past owner of KAPS/KBRC radio. Mr. Keane served on the United Way board for over 30 years. His support included thousands of donated radio ads through the years encouraging contributions to United Way, a generosity continued by the current owners, John & Julie DiMeo.

A long tradition with United Way has been matching teams of volunteers – often from donor businesses and agencies – to nonprofits needing helping hands with painting, landscaping, and other one-time hands-on help. In 2012, Days of Caring was expanded from a three-day effort to a three-month effort. There were numerous projects completed with over 2,300 hours of volunteer support.

Community Action employees help at Camp Kirby. Demonstrating the power of friendship and partnership, Community Action employees volunteer at Camp Kirby, cleaning up cabins for youth summer camp.
