On September 1st University Lake School opened itsdoors to new programs, new ideas, and a new organiza-tional structure. With the closing of the Stackner, studentsin grades six and seven were assigned to the Lower Schoolwhile our 8th graders joined the Upper School. In each ofour Lower School classrooms students were greeted notonly by their new teachers but also the new SmartBoardtechnology. The 6th and 7th graders congregated aroundtheir new lockers before heading over to the Cyber Cafélocated in the cafeteria. Mrs. Karen Malhiot introducedstudents to the new Lower School science lab for gradesfour through seven while parents and students alikewelcomed the new team of Lower School Head Mrs.Linnea Style and Guidance Counselor Nancy Bicha-Dale.

Our 8th graders discovered both their own locker bayas well as a new outdoor classroom. All students wereamazed by the transformation of the Upper School libraryinto a new Multi-Media Center.

Yet despite all these wonderful changes, the true spiritof University Lake School remains the same. Teachers, students and families reconnected with the enthusiasmand new hope that the start of the school year brings.

Thank you for your support, past, present, and future,of the ULS mission.

What more can be said about our Gary G. Gmur, ourlegend who chose early retirement this year? Well, during aunit on Breakfast with Morrie, ninth graders had to discusstheir favorite teacher of all time. Here's a snippet of whatsome said:

“Out of all the teacher's I've had, I understood Mr. Gmur'steaching method the most. He'd always use different approach-es depending on who was in class. He'd go from the book,to the lab, and even class discussions. If you didn't understandthe subject as well as other people, or needed extra help,he would always be there after school to help you. Another thing

I liked came from his sense of humor and how he couldalways make a lesson funny. He would often make jokes aboutthe subject at hand and even find cool pictures and videosoff the internet.

Perhaps the best thing aboutMr. Gmur could have been thathe made every class engaging.Whether the topic was atoms to the stars, he would find the waythat you learned best and use that during classes. He wouldalways do different things that would keep you interested.”

0r another: “In 7th and 8th grade Mr. Gmurbroke my “learn and forget” system and hasremained my favorite teacher ever since. If youwant an example for understanding, go talk toMr. Gmur.Whenever I needed help Mr. Gmur wasthere. Since he helped me so much, learning tend-ed to be a blast around Mr Gmur. He used manydifferent resources, for example a video on peri-odic tables or a light bulb that signifies the sun. Ifyou didn't understand what he was teaching, hecould give you about four different examples orexplanations. The impressive temperament thathe added to the learning atmosphere createda perfect setting for his classes. The only time Iremember Mr. Gmur being angry was whenpeople were swinging on the giant cube we builtduring class.”

Or yet a third: “One quality that made Mr. Gmura great teacher was how much knowledge he hadin so many subjects. His ability to teach wasastounding and kept everyone interested. Thehomework assignments were varied to make surewe wouldn't get bored. I recall him being one ofthe kindest teachers that I have ever had. Iremember that he would check our homeworkand would give us feedback or suggestions. If wehad something wrong, he would give the assign-ment back to us and we would have a chance tomake corrections and receive full credit.”

A legion of facultyhave fond stories, too:Thanks to Gary for hiring me 19 years ago, Igot a fun summer job, a husband and 3 threekids out of the deal. Those are some greatemployment benefits!

Like a Swiss watch, Gary never needs repair-oreven winding up-he is quietly present in everyminute and strikes the hour precisely andcontinuously. He ticks off numbers and withevery second impacts students’ and colleagues’lives with his ironic humor and respectfulmanners. The Grandpa of the 3rd generationof Gmurs at ULS,

Gary has shared his time, hisdedication, and his family withthe ULS community for 43 years. His 3 children, Peter, Ann, and Jean, people ouryearbooks and memories, and Peter peoplesour classrooms with his children.

Who can forget the duo of Gmur and(math department chair) Jim Raufus? and their1-minute math dept. meetings in the boys'

bathroom.A lot a brilliance can spill out in oddplaces, in short chance meetings. The otherduo of (former headmaster) Richard Butt andGary, planning and discussing ULS's philosophyand teaching strategies. Great men, greatcollaborators, life-long friends....

I personally remember how he drove out to myhome to deliver flowers to me when I had beenin the hospital. (I had lost a baby). I guess to methis is an example of yet another side of Gary -the soft and caring side. His dry sense of humorwas always the best! I marveled at how he wasable to deal with a building full of women. I wasblessed to be hired by him. I worked along sidehim as his secretary. He watched both of mychildren grow.He was their principal but also mydaughter's middle school teacher. I am honoredto be teaching his granddaughter this year. Hehas left such a legacy. I think when you look upULS you will find Gary Gmur's name.

I remember Gary on the sledding hill, in hisblue/green heavy jacket. He was always there, not interfering or saying much, but hispresence was enough. The kids always knewhe'd be there for him.

Gary is a servant leader. I've never worked forsuch a man who would sweep, clean up nastymesses, and just do whatever needed to bedone with very few words. It made me want towork harder!

Gary and I used to take kids cross countryskiing after school back in the old days.Whatwere we thinking? Some had never been onskis, we had to practically carry them and thencatch up with the kids who could ski. Goodthing Gary knew the woods, or I would havebeen lost a lot. I loved those days.

He was Gary G, the master mathlete. “G” forgentleman, and “G” for giant, (well, symbolically, anyway).

Remember his giant bag of ties? He had "mathgeek" ties and just plain ugly ties!

I really missed Gary as Head when he wentback to teaching. But he was definitely happierback in the classroom, I know. His quietmanner, his humor, his math mind, made him agreat boss. I still miss him a lot.

Mr. Gmur was all class. He helped me out a tonin the first year I was teaching the Pre-Algebraclass. Always there with a smile and was quickto ask you how you were doing.

A great teacher andeven better man.

I will always remember him as a big influenceon my time at ULS.

He's ageless! If you compare his yearbookphoto in 1966 with the one this year, you'llnote few differences. Students, take note! Thefountain of youth is math!

The high school has a Gary Gmur Scholaraward that reflects his nature. It's given to astudent who “demonstrates a positive attitude, participates in class discussions, perseveresin problem solving, has insights into mathrelationships, and who has helped others.”

Kindness, humility, academic excellence, humor, collegiality, student-centeredness, intelligence, theglue holding ULS together: that's what we can sayabout our Gary Gmur.

Gary is a gentle-man. His kind demeanor anda warm disposition welcomes students andfaculty. Because of his accessibility andopenness, he has been a ready mentor forcountless students and faculty over the years.

I miss the steady, calming effect of talking withGary. When I walk away from a conversationwith him, his perspective and wisdom remindme what a great place ULS is!

Gary Gmur arrived at ULS, a single, rookieteacher, fresh out of the University ofWisconsin’s mathematics program. While atULS he married, had three children whograduated from the school, and now hasgrandchildren at the school. The new teacherwho made a commitment to teach at ULS in1968, has put the best years of his life into theschool. Gary’s unwavering loyalty, dedication tohis students, love of mathematics, and sense ofhumor set a standard for ULS teachers thatall should emulate. Retirement is deserved, but it is a bittersweet time for the schoolcommunity, as his absence makes us aware offeelings of loss.

Gary was and is a true and loyal friend. He wasLower School Head in the formative years ofthe Lower School and he made teachers, students, and parents feel that this was the bestplace to be. His leadership in those yearshelped grow the school into a caring place forchildren. Of course one cannot think of Garywithout thinking about not only his commit-ment to ULS, but also his sense of humor.Where would we be today without his humorto see us through difficult days? I think of himdriving kids in the school van, teaching driver’sed in the summer months, skiing with theLower School kids in the ULS woods afterschool, frying numerous brats and hamburgersat the Back to School nights or Barn Sale days, helping out in any way asked.

What an excellent model forstudents and adults alike.

“It is a pleasure to watch new families become apart of our community, and to hear from themhow happy they are with their decision to chooseULS for their children. A new parent captured theessence of what makes us so unique when shewrote the following note: ‘I know my daughterwill realize all she can be at ULS. I am so gratefulfor everyone’s help and encouragement, and I willalways recommend this school because I knowyour service attitude reflects the true spirit of thisschool --- that every child is a star.’"

“Our growing

challenges have

become opportunities

to broaden our

horizons.”

Everyone loves new and exciting challenges and knows thatchange is inevitable. This year's changes have been enthusias-tically embraced by the parents, students, and faculty ofUniversity Lake School. We've expanded the science program, added a second section of fifth grade, welcomed the sixth andseventh grade students to the building and created a CyberCafe just for them, as well as installed Smart Boards in eachclassroom in the building!

Expanding the science program is an exciting way to ensurecurriculum continuity throughout the intermediate andmiddle grades and provide an incredible hands-on sciencefoundation. Karen Malhiot and her students love the newlyremodeled science lab and the new supplies that werepurchased through generous donations from our ULSparent community. Her students have already been testingwater samples, and put their knowledge to work on a fieldtrip to the Oconomowoc River.

The fifth graders have warmly welcomed new studentsand are developing lasting friendships. Mrs. Eckert andMr. Hardgrove are thrilled with their inquisitive students andhave noticed a zest for learning and sense of community. After learning about the early explorers, the fifth graders tooktheir lesson to heart and spent their recess time gatheringsticks, building forts, and simulating what it was like to settle inthis country. It is heartwarming to see the students take whatthey have learned in the classroom and use their imaginationto reenact the lesson in a different environment.

The second grade classes moved to the primary wing thisyear, making that space even more vibrant and welcoming forour youngest Lakers.

Perhaps you've heard about the Cyber Cafe located in theLower School cafeteria/multipurpose room. This new additionhas been a special gathering place for the 6th and 7th gradersto study, complete homework, or just “hang out” briefly. Thanks to a student body vision and the unconditionalparental support, this became a reality.

The Smart Boards not only look cool in every Lower Schoolclassroom but are also awesome teaching and learning tools. The teachers have had several meetings and participated in anextensive Smart Board training in-service. The Smart Boardsare an invaluable resource and have made the students evenmore eager to participate!

Best of all, I have the privilege of witnessing learning at itsfinest, and delight in the energy and enthusiasm that thestudents exude on a daily basis in the Lower School! Ourgrowing challenges have become opportunities to broadenour horizons. I have seen a lasting impact on the lives of thosewe teach, and it completely reaffirms why my job is one of themost rewarding!

Page 9: University Lake School 2008-09 Annual Report

In education, like other investments, the payoff is often notimmediately realized, but can require patience, diligence andnurturing. Having the perspective of the long haul is not easywhen dealing with monetary capital or a student's potential.

One of the most rewarding aspects of working with studentsat ULS is seeing the progress of each child over an extendedperiod of time. Developing traits in students that transcendacademic department or discipline seldom happens quickly. While the incremental progress can be frustrating, especiallyrelative to the usual pace of 21st century life, it is remarkableto see the student as a finished high school product.

Graduation is exhilarating every spring, but for me it pales incomparison to the long term reward of our students beingsuccessful in the next stages of college and adulthood. Theacademic preparation is evident in the remarkable scholarshipand financial awards the 2009 graduates took to college.Theeight “lifelong Lakers” in last year's senior class were awardedan average of $152,693 in scholarships. The entire classreceived scholarships totaling $1,609,940.

Whether getting an enthusiastic update from an alum'sparent or receiving an email from a graduate who is enjoyinga successful first semester, the impact of the ULS and UpperSchool community is profound. My inbox this fall has notesfrom members of the Class of 2009 who have found that theyhave significant advantages over their peers upon arriving atcollege. First, they are attending a college that fits them. The philosophy, school size, location and level of supportmatch their strengths in order to be successful. Secondly, theyhave the ability to work independently. They can carry a fullschedule and be involved in campus life and activities beyondtheir class load, allowing for a more connected and successfulexperience. Our graduates know how to study, asking criticaland clarifying questions. Further, where many high studentshave been in the back of the classroom or cut from the team,ULS students have been in the mix and are ready to lead incollege, seeking and maximizing opportunities.

Finally, and as important as the academic preparation, it makesme proud to hear that the students believe in themselves. “Itwas not until my departure from ULS and the start of aneducation class... that I was really able to take a step back andlook at my high school experience from a different perspec-tive. And as much as I never would have admitted it in yearspast, the experience was never about the grades I received.ULS defined me as a person, both inside and out.”

Our Business Manager, Tim Horner, often includes a noteabout the value of investment in your child's education.Without question, it does take some patience for the divi-dends to arrive. However, from the Class of 1961 to the Classof 2009, our alumni share a common heritage; the supportand commitment of their families and school to maximizetheir opportunities and rewards.

SmartBoardsEvery classroom in the Lower School grades 1-7 have aSmartBoard thanks to a very generous anonymous donor.Their gift is truly making a difference in our students learningand in the way our teachers teach. When talking to theteachers, I think Liz McSorley, 2nd Grade summed it upbest “We love it!!!!!! This tremendous tool is changing the wayI teach in a major way!” Mary Koepke, 4th grade reflected“Really fun and the students have finally really learned elapsedtime! I've found a clock that the kids can use, push ahead orback by 1 min, 5 min, 15 min or 1 hour. They set the clock, thenmove back or forward depending upon the problem. This isthe first time I've been able to teach elapsed time and thinkthat the kids actually are getting it!”

ULS – New WebsiteLast November the school launched its new and improvedwebsite. The new design is intended to showcase all that isunique about the University Lake School experience. Initiallyintended as a marketing tool for prospective families, the site has grown to become an important vehicle forcommunicating with current parents.

As ULS continues efforts to be environmentally conscious, wehave increasingly used the website as a resource for familiesto access back to school forms, current event details, andhighlights of campus happenings.Visitors to the site can applyfor admission and donate to the school as well.

Work is currently underway to include detailed curricularexamples, galleries of student work and an alumnicommunity forum. The website will continue to evolve into avaluable resource for our entire extended ULS community.Whether you’re on campus every day or thousandsof miles away, you can stay connected by logging on towww.universitylake.org. By sending us your e-mail we cankeep you connected even more.

Katherine Davis Tornehl Memorial Fund

Congratulations to theKatherine Davis TornehlMemorial Fund Recipients! The Katherine Davis Tornehl Memorial Fund was established in May of 2008 torecognize and celebrate the life of Kate – who touched the lives of so manychildren and individuals.A teacher for 35 years, Kate’s passion for teaching andlearning was contagious. She was instrumental in creating and leading thepre-primary department, bringing the Reggio Emilia approach to UniversityLake School.

The Katherine Davis Tornehl Memorial Fund will to be used for professionaldevelopment. Specifically, to immerse our faculty in the theory and practicesof the Reggio Emilia Approach for their immersion courses.

Congratulations go out to Jamie Aldrich (3rd grade), Pamela Probst (1stgrade) and Lindsay Sandstrom (JK) for becoming the first recipients of thefund. Jamie, Pam and Lindsay headed off Oct. 25- 30th to Reggio Emilia, Italyto attend an international course and study week “The experience of thePreschool and research contexts and continuity with Primary School.” Thisis a great honor for University Lake School to have three of our faculty beaccepted to participate in this international course with such limited enrollment.

It is our hope that Kate’s passion for learning will forever be contagiousthrough this fund created as a living legacy to her.At the 2009 Spring Auction,Kate’s family and dear friends bought back the four canvases created by ULSPK-7 students to hang in the Lower School Lobby in her memory. If you wouldlike to help keep this vision and Kate’s spirit vibrant, please make a gift tothe The Katherine Davis Tornehl Memorial Fund. For information regardingmaking a gift or purchasing a copy of the Canvas Artwork please contact theInstitutional Advancement office.

We look forward to many years of sharing Kate’s passion for the love oflearning with her colleagues.

“I don’t care if my kindergarteners know how long it takes achrysalis to turn into butterfly. I’m more interested in helpingthem explore the process. I want them to be mesmerized.I want them to wonder and discover and try to make senseof the transformation. There is freedom to learn and exploreat ULS. To watch children learn. To listen to children createa theory, to practice it, to explore it. To see them explain

and teach it to another child. That’s power.”- Katherine Davis Tornehl

JUNE 6TH, 2009 GRADUATION Benediction

It has been 18 years in the making, now it is time to go our separate ways. Though weleave for grander things, we shall never forget the journey that brought us to this point. We want to recognize our dedicated teachers for the encouragement they have given usthroughout the years. Not only are they amazing educators, but incredible mentors. Wewant to thank our families and friends for the never-ending love and support. Without allof your guidance none of us would be here.

As we embark on a new adventure, may we find direction in times of need, courage intimes of hardships, faith in times of doubt, hope in times of despair, and joy in times ofsadness. Let us go forth and begin a new chapter, yet as we branch out, let us never forgetour roots. We part with many memories that we will forever hold in our hearts.

As we diverge on the uncertain and untraveled roads of our futures we understand thatour years here at ULS WILL MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE. We anticipate our paths crossing in the near future, realizing that these are not goodbyes just longer “see yalaters.” To all those who have impacted our lives, we truly thank you.

On behalf of the entire ULS Class of 2009 we truly thank you.

- Brighid Dolan & Mark Ditkof
