KORE (maiden) is a name of the goddess of Greek mythology, Persephone. Persephone was the radiant maiden of the spring and summertime, whose light step upon the dry, brown hillside was enough to make it fresh and blooming. The Greek poet Sappho writes, "I heard the footfall of the flower spring", Persephone's footfall.

ABOUT FELD BALLETS/NYFELD BALLETS/NY was established in

1974 by Eliot Feld, regarded as one of America's most original and inventive ballet choreogra­ phers. Feld's canon of work - he has choreo­ graphed seventy nine ballets since 1967 - has come to embody a distinctive vision of contem­ porary American ballet: dancing that breaks from academic constraints to freely incorporate all kinds of movement, yet maintains an allegiance to the elegance of classical ballet. The spectac­ ularly versatile dancers of Ballets/NY are known for their special abilities in assisting Mr. Feld in the invention of new dance language.

Between 1974 and 1978, the company had five New York seasons at The New York Shakespeare Festival's Newman Theater, as well as seasons at the City Center 55th Street Dance Theatre and the Plymouth Theatre. Since 1982, Feld Ballets/NY has regularly performed in New York at The Joyce Theater, where the company currently presents spring seasons and summer "preview" seasons for a total of seven weeks annually. The February 15 - March 20, 1994 Spring Season marks Feld Ballets/NY's nineteenth at The Joyce.

Feld Ballets/NY tours extensively, and has performed in more than forty states and thirteen countries. Major touring support is provided by the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The company is an innovator in the realms of culture, human resources, and real estate. The first of such initiatives came with the opening of The New Ballet School in 1978. Since the inception of this tuition-free program, more than 158,000 students in 319 elementary schools citywide have been auditioned, and since 1988, more than 2,500 children have attended classes at the School's lower Manhattan studios. The first "graduate" of The New Ballet School to join Feld Ballets/NY is Darren Gibson, now a principal dancer and the company's ballet master.

Now rapidly expanding its talent search, this year The New Ballet School will audition more than 70,000 children in 380 public elementary schools; approximately 820 of these children will be chosen to attend ballet classes. The New Ballet School's advanced students attend the Professional Performing Arts School, a Board of Education Intermediate and High School, which opened in 1990.

In recognition of its innovations in recruiting and training dance talent, the National Endowment for the Arts has awarded a $250,000 Challenge Grant to The New Ballet School to support an increase in auditions and enrollment of New York City public school children over the next three years.

Another Feld Ballets/NY venture was The Joyce Theater. The once-dilapidated Elgin Cinema was renovated into a handsome and intimate theater designed for dance with funds raised by Original Ballets Foundation, Inc., the non-profit organization that supports Feld Ballets/NY and The New Ballet School. After opening on June 1, 1982, The Joyce quickly became the nation's busiest dance house, and has provided its stage and support services to more than 130 companies.

Since 1977, the company has made its home in the building fondly referred to by the dance and theater world as "890 Broadway." In 1986, with the assistance of arts patron and real estate magnate Lawrence A. Wien, Feld Ballets/NY was joined by fellow tenant American Ballet Theatre in purchasing their home - and that of theatrical costumers, cobblers, and set designers - to save it from commercial development. Renamed in October 1988 as The Lawrence A. Wien Center for Dance and Theater, the building is co-owned by the two ballet companies and remains New York City's primary rehearsal complex for the performing arts.

This is the sixth appearance of the company under Musical Society auspices.

DARREN GIBSON Born: New York, New York. Studied: Began his ballet training at age 10 with The New Ballet School, associate school of Feld Bal­ lets/NY. Performed: As an apprentice, he danced in Eliot Feld's "Papillon" and Nijinska's "Les Noces". In 1986, he became the first student from The New Ballet School to join Feld Ballets/NY. Since 1991, he has been the company's Rehearsal Assistant. During 1992- 93, he staged Contra Pose for Richmond Ballet and assisted with the revival of Aurora I for Feld Ballets/NY.

Performed: with Feld Ballets/NY since its first season in 1974; this season marks his 20th year as Eliot Feld's musical colleague and collab­ orator.

ALLEN LEE HUGHES (Lighting Designer). Bom: Washington, D.C. Studied: Catholic University, New York University, graduated with an MFA degree. Has designed over 40 ballets for Feld Ballets/NY since 1985. His lighting has been represented in the reper­ tories of American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Hartford Ballet, Atlanta Ballet and Pilobolus. His Broadway credits include Tony Award nominations for "Strange Interlude", "K2" and "Once On This Island". Other Broadway work includes "Accidental Death of An Anarchist", "Mulebone" and "Quilters". Off-Broadway he has designed the lighting for "A Soldier's Play", "So Long on Lonely Street", "From the Mississippi Delta", among others.
