that "a student failing to qualify for promotion to th e

Third Year after attending three academic sessions, woul d

not be permitted to re-register in Engineering" should hav e

been additional to the clause providing for "withdrawal fro m

the University of students failing twice in the work of th e

same year", rather than a replacement of the latter clause .

The following changes regarding the Ph .D . course

were recommended to Senate by the Faculty of Graduat e

Studies on May 4th, 1956 :

1. In the 1956-57 Calendar, on page 326, section 2, unde r"Admission", the clause under (b) reading "in whichcase additional work will be required" is to be deleted .

2. The following new section is proposed for insertio nimmediately after section 2 :

"Candidates will normally be required to spend aminimum of three winter sessions at the University .Those possessing a Master's degree (or the equivalent )may have this period of time reduced in exceptiona lcases by the Executive Committee of the Faculty o fGraduate Studies . "

3. Page 327, under "Courses of Study" : section 7 shouldbe deleted .

4. No . 8 becomes No . 7 .

5. No . 9 becomes No . 8, and the last sentence will b eamended to read as follows :

"The Executive Committee of the Faculty of Graduat eStudies shall require the thesis to be submitted t oan outside examiner or examiners, approved by th eCommittee . It may also require the publication ofthe thesis in whole or in part as a condition o fgranting the Ph .D . degree . "

6. No . 10 becomes No . 9 and is to be reworded as follows :

"In addition to the thesis, candidates possessingthe Master's degree (or the equivalent) will b erequired to take courses totalling not less than6 units in their major field and at least 6 unit sin related subjects . Candidates possessing aBachelor's degree with Honours (or the equivalent )will be required to take 12 units in their majo rfield and 9 units in related subjects . In bothcases candidates may be required to take an yadditional courses that in the opinion of th eDepartment concerned are necessary to complet etheir knowledge of their chosen field of study . "

Council of the School o fPhysical Education

Compulsory Physical Education Programm e

It was reported that the Council of the School o f

Physical Education, on May 4th, had indicated that i f

necessary, in view of the increasing enrolment for 1956-5 7

and the requirements of the College and Faculty of Education ,

they would propose certain modifications of the compulsory

physical education programme, but that this would be don e

with the greatest reluctance .

Committee consisting of members of th eCouncil of the School of PhysicalEducation and others concerned, to surve ythe situation in regard to compulsor yphysical education for the 1956-57 Sessionand report at the next meeting of Senate ,and subsequently to consider and

Faculty of Arts and Science ,Heads of Departments - reNew Arts Building

Dean Chant reported that the Committee of Head s

of Departments of the Faculty of Arts and Science ha d

recommended to the Committee on Buildings and Grounds tha t

the proposed new Arts Building be named the Buchana n

Building, after the late Dean .

Dean Chant )Dean Gage ) That Senate approve the recommendation

that the proposed new Arts Building benamed the Buchanan Building .

From the Council of th eSchool of Commerce

A proposal from the Council of the School of

Commerce to change the status of Commerce from a School to

a Faculty, had been circulated to the members of Senate

prior to the meeting . In commenting on the proposal, Dean

Chant mentioned that the School of Commerce had at presen t

the third largest student body on the campus, and ha d

developed an intricate programme of extension and extra -

mural courses .

Recommendation re Credit fromthe Vancouver School of Art

Dean Gage reported that the Joint Board of th e

College of Education had recommended to Senate that student s

with full University Entrance standing who had completed ,

prior to September, 1957, at least the full two-year Diplom a

course of the Vancouver School of Art, should be given credi t

for a major in Art toward the degree of B .Ed .

The Joint Board had further suggested that th e

Senate might consider the appointment of a committee to loo k

into the question of credits in Art or courses in Art fo r

future years .

Consider the Establishment of a School of Music recommende d

to Senate :

1. That all academic music activity and instruction offere dby the University be centred in the present Departmen tof Music in the Faculty of Arts and Science .

2. The early establishment of a School of Music in th eFaculty of Arts and Science as soon as funds an dfacilities become available .

The Committee also recommended to the Presiden t

and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science the appoint-

ment, this academic year, of a Professor and Head of th e

Department of Music with a view to the early establishmen t

of a School of Music . The Committee had appointed a

sub-committee to assist Dean Chant in the screening and

selection of candidates for this position .

The recommendation from the British Columbia Guil d

of Music Teachers with reference to a Board of Examiner s

had been noted, but left until the School of Music wa s

developed .

As authorized by Senate at its previous meeting,

the Committee membership had been enlarged to include Dean

be covered by a grant from the Provincial Government .

The President reported that the Allstate Foundation

had offered the University a grant of $5,000 .00 to provide a

summer course for the teachers of automobile driving to hig h

school students . Details of the proposed course had been

discussed by Dean Andrew, Dr . Argue, the representative o f

the Foundation, representatives of the University Extension

Department and the Vancouver Traffic and Safety Council .

Dean Matthews reported that the Evergreen Conference

had a ruling forbidding its members to schedule any games in

any sport against colleges or universities which did no t

enter teams in at least four major sports in the Conference .

regulation should be rescinded, since it was not compatibl e

with participation by the University of British Columbia in

the Evergreen Conference .
