Biographical Note
Edgar Johnson Goodspeed was born in Quincy, Illinois on October 23, 1871, son of ThomasWakefield Goodspeed, one of the original incorporators of the University of Chicago. Aftergraduation with the final preparatory class at the Old University of Chicago in 1886, heentered Denison University and received his B.A. degree in 1890. He then studied Semiticsunder William Rainey Harper at Yale for one year. Goodspeed returned to Chicago to teachclassical languages at the Morgan Park Academy (1891-1892), and at the South Side Academy(1894-1898). Meanwhile, in 1892, he had entered the University of Chicago as a post-graduatefellow. He received his D.B. from the University in 1897, and his Ph.D. in 1898, the same yearhe joined the faculty as a teacher of Biblical and Patristic Greek. In 1923, after having firmly

established himself as one of the leading papyrologists and experts on New Testament Greekin this country, he published his New Testament--An American Translation which caused animmediate and nationwide sensation. The same year he was appointed chairman of the NewTestament Department and served until his retirement from the University in 1937.
Upon retirement, Goodspeed and his wife, the former Elfleda Bond, daughter of Joseph Bond,the noted Chicago industrialist, moved to the Bel-Air section of Los Angeles, California, wherehe lectured for the University of California-Los Angeles from 1938 to 1942 while continuing hiswriting and scholarship. He was also Richards Lecturer at the University of Virginia in 1939, anda Lecturer in Biblical Literature at Scripps College from 1941 to 1942. From 1930 to 1946 heserved on the American Standard Bible Committee under the direction of Luther Weigle fromYale, which published the Revised Standard Version of the Bible.
During his lifetime he wrote 64 books, collaborated on 16 others, and published 189 majorarticles and countless reviews.
Edgar Goodspeed died in Los Angeles on January 13, 1962.

The Edgar J. Goodspeed Papers consist of correspondence, notes, manuscripts, diaries,notebooks, clippings, reviews, and miscellaneous items related to Goodspeed's personal lifeand professional activities. The primary focus of the collection is on Goodspeed’s literary andprofessional work.
The collection is divided into seven series, including: Series I: Correspondence, Series II:Manuscripts, Notes, and Papers, Series III: Reviews and Clippings, Series IV: Photoduplicationsof Manuscripts: Series V: Notebooks and Scrapbooks, Series VI: Printed Material, Series VII:Miscellaneous.

Series I: Correspondence
Series I has been further divided into three Subseries, Subseries 1: Professional, Subseries 2:Personal and Family, and Subseries 3: Miscellaneous.
Subseries 1: Professional, is primarily made up of letters from publishers and colleagues.Among the correspondents in this section are Ellery Sedgwick, Edith Rockefeller-McCormick,Richard M. Nixon, Everett Dirksen, John W. Bricker, Frederick Kenyon, Archibald MacLeish,Robert A. Millikan, Len Small, Frank Lowden, and Robert A. Taft. This subseries is organizedalphabetically.
Subseries 2: Family and Personal, is largely made up of correspondence of Goodspeed and hiswife with his brother, Charles Ten Broeke Goodspeed. There is also correspondence betweenEdgar and his parents, as well as some early letters of Mary Ellen Ten Broeke (Goodspeed’smother) and George S. Goodspeed dating from 1853 to 1881. Other family and personalcorrespondence can be found in Series V, Box 47 Folders 20-21 and Box 48 Folder 1. Subseries2 is organized chronologically.
Subseries 3: Miscellaneous, is also arranged chronologically, and consists of routine "fan" and"crank" mail, inquiries from readers, invitations to speak, and acknowledgements.
