A f t e r its p r e m i e r e i n 1 7 9 5 , t h e c o m p o s e r d e c i d e d
t o m a k e revis ions t o t h e w o r k f o r a p e r f o r m a n c e
in P r a g u e in 1 7 9 8 ; by t h e t i m e i t w a s p u b l i s h e d in
1 8 0 1 , its sister w o r k in С m a j o r ( w r i t t e n in 1 7 9 5
a n d rev ised i n 1800) h a d a l r e a d y b e e n p u b l i s h e d
ear l ier t h a t s a m e year a s O p u s 15. Thus, w h i l e
t h e B-flat c o n c e r t o w a s c a t a l o g u e d a s O p u s 19, i t

in f luence n o t w i t h s t a n d i n g , t h e work 's essence is
c lear ly Bee thoven 's , as is a t t es ted by t h e " f lash iness"
a n d v i r tuos ic music g iven to t h e solo is t i n t h e f i rst
a n d last m o v e m e n t s , as we l l as t h e unusual sp i r i tua l
d e p t h o f t h e m i d d l e m o v e m e n t .
T h e f i rs t m o v e m e n t , A l l e g r o con b r i o , beg ins w i t h a
i'z~r\ orchestra l expos i t i on of t h e main t h e m a t i c
mate r ia l . W h e n t h e p iano f inal ly en ters , i t d o e s so
in a ra ther s u b d u e d manner , b u t as t h e m o v e m e n t
deve lops , i t s o o n takes pa r t o f t h e b u o y a n t m o o d
t h a t p r e d o m i n a t e s . The cadenza a t t h e e n d o f t h e
m o v e m e n t was w r i t t e n a t a m u c h later d a t e t h a n t h e
rest o f t h e m o v e m e n t a n d is unusual ly l o n g . A f t e r
its f inal f lour ish , t h e orchest ra p rov ides a shor t six-
measure codetta to c lose t h e m o v e m e n t .
The second m o v e m e n t , A d a g i o , concerns i tsel f w i t h
a s ing le t h e m a t i c sub jec t . W r i t t e n in a c o n c e n t r a t e d
sonata f o r m , i t is an express ive d i a l o g u e b e t w e e n
p iano and orches t ra in w h i c h lyrical deco ra t i ons
h i gh l i gh t t h e b e a u t y o f t h e s ing le t h e m e . Instead
o f t h e e x p e c t e d cadenza , t h e p iano p rov ides
a rhy thmica l ly d e c o r a t e d series of a r p e g g i o s
i n t e r r u p t e d b y t h e i n t e r m i t t e n t f r a g m e n t s o f t h e
t h e m e s in t h e s t r ings.

Rimsky-Korsakov came f r o m a fami ly of d i s t i ngu ished
mi l i tary and naval f igures , so i t is no t s t range t h a t in
his y o u t h he d e c i d e d on a career as a naval off icer.
