This compact program will give you relevant and practical information from numerous speakers who are experienced experts in their disciplines related to geriatric care.

The Geriatric Miniresidency, a university-based program, has been refined for over 25 years. It has provided training for dental professionals from across the United States, Canada, and around the world.

The program is comprised of an interprofessional faculty with extensive expertise in all aspects of geriatric care from across the health sciences.

EDUCATIONAL METHODSIllustrated lectures, discussion, demonstrations, observation and tour of long-term care facilities.

Take advantage of this rare hands-on opportunity in contemporary pediatric dentistry!

Enthusiastic and experienced instructors will share with you everything you need to know about pediatric dentistry today and will guide you through several hands-on workshops relevant to your practice.

In addition, you will benefit from the individual attention from faculty and close interaction with fellow course participants afforded by the small class size. After this practical program, you will return to your practice with the knowledge, confidence and skills to treat young children using present-day materials and techniques.

DESIGNED FORGeneral dentists and dental therapists

TAKE AWAY THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS TO:• incorporate principles of medical management for older adults into the

dental treatment plan.

• recognize common drug-related oral health problems and employ safe prescribing practices.

• manage root caries, preventive care and other common dental issues in older adults.

• employ effective treatment planning principles and strategies.

• apply appropriate practices for informed consent, behavior management, interpretation of advance directives and other ethical and legal concerns in working with older adult patients.

• perform ergonomically sound and safe patient transfers from wheelchairs.

• improve patient management as needed.

• establish an effective dental program in long-term care facilities, including contracts, staffing, communication systems, and selection of clinical delivery systems.

• work effectively with nursing home administrators, medical directors, and nursing staff.

• document and bill for services provided in long-term care facilities.

• employ quality assurance and program evaluation strategies.

• integrate long-term care into a private practice.

RECEIVE USEFUL INFORMATION ON HOW TO:• assess a child’s caries risk and treatment plan accordingly.

• determine when to initiate pulp therapy, restore or extract primary teeth.

• diagnose and manage developing malocclusion in the primary and early mixed dentitions.

• manage premature tooth loss.

• select the best restorative options and materials—all things considered.

• assess and manage traumatic injuries in the primary and mixed dentitions.

• reduce fear and anxiety and provide pain control for the young patient.

• manage behaviorally challenging children and their parents.

• determine when to treat in your practice and when to refer.

THROUGH HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE, LEARN HOW TO:• prepare and adapt stainless steel crowns.

• prepare and adapt pediatric zirconia crowns.

• design and fabricate arch length space maintainers.

• prepare teeth for a pulpotomy.

• prepare and restore fractured primary incisors with celluloid crown forms.

This course is under the direction of Stephen K. Shuman, DDS, MS, Associate Professor and Director, Oral Health Services for Older Adults Program, Department of Primary Dental Care, University of Minnesota School of Dentistry; Dental Director, Walker Methodist Dental Clinic, Walker Methodist Health Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Miniresidency is comprised of an interprofessional faculty with extensive expertise in all aspects of geriatric care from across the health sciences.

The University of Minnesota’s Oral Health Services for Older Adults Program is nationally known and has won the Geriatric Oral Health Care Award from the American Dental Association and the 2016 Innovation Award from LeadingAge, the national association of over 6000 non-profit aging services organizations.

This program is supported by Delta Dental of Minnesota.

Richard J. Baylon, DDS, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Division of Pediatric Dentistry, Department of Developmental and Surgical Sciences, University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. Dr. Baylon maintains a four clinic private practice limited to pediatric dentistry with three partners. He is a staff member of St. Paul Children’s Hospital and serves on their Surgery, Anesthesia, and Pathology Committees. He also serves as a consulting pediatric dentist for research and clinical development with 3M ESPE Dental Products Division. Dr. Baylon is a frequent guest lecturer for the University of Minnesota Continuing Dental Education Department, the Division of Pediatric Dentistry, and the University of Tennessee Pediatric Dental Alumni Association.

Robert S. Jones, DDS, PhD, Associate Professor, Division of Pediatric Dentistry, Department of Developmental and Surgical Sciences, University of Minnesota School of Dentistry; Diplomate, American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Jones received his DDS and PhD after completing the Dental Scientist Training Program at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He completed his Pediatric Dental Residency at UCSF in 2009 and has done research in examining biological factors in Early Childhood Caries. Dr. Jones is a 2010 recipient of the Faculty Development Award from the 3M Foundation.
