While the Carlson School is known for preparing students to succeed after graduation, Pankaj Mathurand the Welcome Committee helped other interna-tional students immediately upon arrival. “Entering anew environment can be challenging,” says Pankaj,an alum and a native of India. “That’s why we createdthe Welcome Committee. International studentsneed to find a place to live, become familiar with theculture, and sort through other issues. The goal ofthe welcome committee is to make the transition aseasy as possible.”

Santiago Palacio’07 MBA

After extensive research and a campus visit, Santiago andhis wife emigrated from Colombia to pursue MBAs at theCarlson School. “We wanted a school that is closely inte-grated with the business community,” he says. “And thequality of life here is amazing.” They were also drawn tothe smaller class sizes and networking opportunities. Inaddition to organizing High Tech club events, Santiagodeveloped professional relationships and leadership skillsthrough a variety of associations. His Enterprise experi-ence was particularly exciting. “We had great exposure toC-level management of large companies,” he says. “It hasa very high impact on your career development.” Santiagointerned for Dell and is now a consultant with McKinsey.

“When I applied for internships, I got severaloffers, all through the Graduate BusinessCareer Center,” explains Ana Ponguta, a nativeof Colombia who earned her MBA in 2003.“The internship I chose was at Ecolab, where I now work full-time as a product line man-ager.” For international students like Ana,Carlson School placement services providevaluable data, support, and training. For most international students, it is challenging to financean MBA education. Fortunately, there are a variety ofresources available to help—both within the University andthrough external organizations. The Carlson School will doeverything possible to help you take advantage of opportuni-ties for financial assistance.

International students are eligible for merit-based aid directedexclusively to Carlson School students. Scholarships rangein value from one-quarter up to full tuition for our most out-standing applicants. In addition, international students canapply for graduate assistantship positions during their secondyear of study, and loans are available through several channels,including MBA Loans, the Student Education Loan Fund(SELF), and Sallie Mae.

Even with financial assistance, it is important to consider allcosts when planning your education. Beyond tuition andother education-related expenses, you must be able to affordfood, housing, transportation, and other necessities.
