ようこそ! WELCOME
The cover and many of the pictures in this edition of UNLV in Asia depict the happiest day of our academic calendar- Commencement. However, the real import of Commencement is just
that- commencing the journey into the next phase of life. Our graduates begin their journey with a distinction unique in the world. They are and will forever be UNLV Rebels.
The last photo in this issue’s article on our 2014 Singapore Commencement Ceremony features a group of new graduates crowded around a table manned by the UNLV Alumni Club in Singapore. I hope that all of them have or will take up the privilege that they have earned to join this exclusive group, open only to Rebels.
The Club is the official affiliate of the UNLV Alumni Association here in Singapore. As more graduates join, we can look forward to more member benefits and a structure for the Rebel network that will benefit Singapore graduates in the hospitality industry in Asia and the world, just as it has benefited Las Vegas graduates for fifty years.
The UNLV Alumni Club is a member directed and managed membership organization. It will only succeed with the active participation of many graduates, and this year is lead by YeYoon Kim (’12) and mentor Emily Woo (‘00, ‘09). UNLV Singapore is committed to advancing the Club in these early days, for the benefit of our life-long Rebels for many years to come.

visit places only seen in pictures up to this point. In years past, we have had students jump out of airplanes, walk the streets of famed American cities and stand in awe at one of the natural wonders of the world, the Grand Canyon. Their UNLV education will take place both within the classroom and beyond the walls of academe. For past students, this adventure has forever changed the lens through which they see the world. As American philosopher John Dewey said, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself”.
I would like to say a special thanks to each of those serving as Faculty-in-Residence who have taken the time to work with the student clubs - (Hotel, Finance, Technology Professionals (HFTP) – Gerry Koh; Student Event Team (SET) - Evelyn Green; Wine Society – Karl Brandmeir; Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) – Bernie Fried; Environmental Committee – Madeline Cheah; and The Cross Cultural Club – Natalie Hudson.

UNLV Singapore welcomed nine Hotel College Hospitality Management majors from the main campus for Fall 2013 study abroad: juniors Diana Fisher, Rebecca Stratton, Raffy Liu and Yuyang Xie; sophomores Thomas Stende, Margarida Araujo, and Veronica Hsiao and freshman Chohee Park. Eight students were awarded the UNLV Singapore Scholarship. Each award covers all tuition and fees for a semester of full-time study at UNLV Singapore. Awards totalled over USD$46,000 for Fall 2013. During their time in Singapore, some students worked in leading hotel chains and popular restaurants, and others travelled to several countries in Southeast Asia including Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. Many of them participated in student activities and shared their valuable experiences of studying in Las Vegas with the local students. Francisco Moon was even elected as the Secretary Treasurer of UNLV Singapore’s Student Government. Applications for future study abroad are now open.
