THANKS QUEENSLAND

On behaIr of South Australian dancers who attC'llded the convention, I sav thank you, Brisbane, tor a wonderful time. Special thanks to the convenOr and his committee for making all this possible.

-ALLAN FROST.

Every year I write my impression , on· return home from a convention, J don't know if anyone ever read, them. The trouble is, I have to compete w ith Tom McGrath, who .. IUt writes in at this time - you couldn't blame readers for hopping over mine to read his.

Well, another good show! Our thanks to "HuRhie the Weather God" for providing such ideal weather conditions.

The attendance was well over 900 and it was \'ery picas· in/.! to see all States well rep. resented. The Centre was there, likewise Ncw Zealand, repre· sen ted bv a couple of squares. A surprise visit came from Armidale. with nearly everv member of their club. Here's a club I didn', know existed - it secms Alan Thomas gavc them a kick off. Billv Sweetman has Ahren a little help. But it's incredible that in less than 12 months, mainlv throu~h records, they hare brou~ht themselres up to convention standard. Good luck to vou, Armidale, and beat this - one of their memo bers has already emerged as a caller.

Everyone wiII be intcrested to know how the sound was, Perhaps not as goo d as Queensland would have liked, but we know this - they did trv. and spent a lot of time and monev doing so.

Bernie Kennedy, their sound official. did everything hc could and had worn himself to a fra1.;1.ie towards the end. Pep feci ion in sound doesn't seem possible; I think Queensland supplied the next best.

The transport was very J!ood. no hitches anywhere -the food was jZood and adc· quate_ Of the general orl!:anj· sation. there was a delay in serving IUllch and a couple of othcr minor hold-ups. but so what ? All the vear we work to a clock, the time·piece should never enter into one's social activities. r d soont!r sec, without sUJZP:esting such was the case, a convention underor.e:anised than over-organised.

I am still cranky I didn't p:et to dance with a lot more interstate dancers than r did, I ha\'e reservations on alternate SQuare·ups or square-ups of any description - it restricts dancers moving around, There is nothinp: like mixinl! e\'eryone UD. such as wi th a round·up. However. I do concede sQuarc.ups do save a little time.

The convention meet in$.! was Quite li velv - the Martins and the Covs. namelv, N.5.W. and Oueensland. I'(ot to feuding . The ref declared it .no contest, so a re·mat ch has becn- set in the local stadium - don' t be di sappointed. get ,"our tickets earl v! Not to WaIT"', it's iust another form of square dancinjZ fun.

The demonstrations were all

of a high standard. and for want of a betlel· name, the "concert ", as diL'ected by Ailsa Chadwick. was worthy of any music hall.

To sum up, another good convt!ntion. but has there c,'er been a bad one? Congratulations Graham Rigby and help' crs and thanks for havinA me.

THANK YOU QUEENSLAND

All Victorian callers and dallcers who attended th~ convention congratulate thL-~ Brisbane committee on a great job.

As convenor, Graham Rigby, said during his clOSing remarks, "all conventions are good." We fEreI this one does not suffer by comparison. Like a ll conventions it had its high and low spots. We will t ry and remember only the highs.

Two Innovations we felt worked very well were the' alternate round· ups and square- ups and the holding of the convention meeting after morning session of dancing. We think both thcse Ideas merit seriOUS consideration for future conventions.

Once aj!ain we say " thank you" to the Queensland committee and dancers for a wonderful cOll\'ention.

NOISE IN MODERN SQUARE DANCING This subject was a discussion topic at the Brisbane Con

vention ilMd WilS rea lly interesting as it is definitely good debating material.

The twO main debating views as ( 1) caller's \\ord addiction and (2 ) dancers' noise, I agree, are reasons for bad sound and noise. but I was a little disappointed when onlv one or t\.\'o placed blame on dancers when most would place all blame on callers. Note: Callers were asked nOt to use up time speaking, as they hnd had their sav at Callers' conference.

Before I explain a trial I myself tried, I wish all to know that I would be the last person to want any fun or enjoyment taken away from square dancinl!;.

My group, "The Merry Mixers", is rather large at times and mainly consists of lively yOl1n~sters and teenagers and can $!"e t mighty rowdy at dances with s ideline CHIT CHAT. etc. M\' trial started by set

and iust say loudly. "S HUT UP!" ( It 's unorthodox, BUT it worked); quietness ruled from the shock, and while everyone was spellbound I replaced music and continued with call and EVERYBODY COULD HEAR WITHOUT ANY CHANGE IN VOLUME , and there was no excess noise either.

I usually have music and voice goin~ through the same speakers, mv equipment would be one of the cheapest, my word addiction as a caller, terrible, BUT, they were not the cause of the NOISE.

I suppose I would be the only one who could get away with this unorthodox method without losing dance rs, BUT it shows that the dancers should shou lder their share of blame.

ting musk and microphone For instance, think of the volumes at a normal sound, sound effects when a demon· BUT no one could hear, BUT stration or display is on and there was plenty of noise. dancers are all quiet. Next s tep was to slop music -TED SAMS.

HURRAH FOR BRISBANE! In spite of strikes a most

entertaininl!; and sun ny convention was enjoyed bv over 900 people from aU States and New Zealand.

The parade of dressed sets was something to remember, thousands of hours must have been spent collectively by the dancers who presented their own individual ideas and de· signs in their verv colourful "d ressed sets", a truly com· mendable effort.

The standard of dancing was }2:ood and with the vast ranl!;e of ca1Jers everyone's requirements were weI! catered fo r. The many demonstra· tions at both City Hall and Cloudlands were a delight to observe and, as usual. the }2:race and dress of the Victorian callers and wives was par-ticularlv pleasin,!! . •

Meetings were a lillie rush· ed, but with so much to fit

into a weekend, it would reo Quire a superman to organise every facet perfectly.

A very pleasi.ng feature was the "Rest a'While" review, which we understand was written, desi,l!ned, produced and acted by the combined effort s of Bri sbane dancers; not onlv was it verv good entertainment , but a le,!!i l imate reason to rest tired feet.

Special praise must go to Ailsa Chadwick for Ihe basic story and continuii V of acts which made a \'erv well bal· anced and presented show.

Whilst all the people and ,l!I'OUPS who deserve praise have not been mentioned, I am sure they know that we, the dancers, appreciated their efforts, and particularly the efforts of Graeme, Val and their Committee. -CHARLES VAGGS, N.S.\\'.

SQUARE DANCERS OF THE MONTH NEWCASTLE will be the venue for the 1973 14th National

Convention. There are many hard-working commitfee members in New

castle pUlling in their time to ma ke sure the 14th is a success. But, without the couple we have chosen as our Square Dancers of the Month, Newcastle wouldn't have much hope in staging a Na tional Convention - because as you will soon read, one of our chosen pa ir is Newcastle's only regular cailer.

Nollv, when some people read th is, they may say to themselves, "We ll if you only have one caller you have to take what you can get!" Not so with Newcastle! They have as a caller one at the best - not just in Australia but perhaps in the square dancing world. A bold statement no doubt, but we believe this to be true - so we said it .

From Newcastle, we present -BRIAN AND WENDY HOTCHK IES.

Wendy began dancing at Newcastle Y.M.C.A. in 1960 a fter coming along !O "gi\'e it "\ AO". And Brian came along

-'to the same club in 1961 with a friend, "just to watch". This is a familiar star . ." to all of us. When you first look in on a sq uare dance, lillie do you realise what the next eleven y~ars will bring. Brian was dub treasurer in 1962 and began his callin~ care~r with the Y.M.C.A. club in 1963. That club functioned for eight year.s, and chJring that time Wendy held the positions of president, \' icc-p resident, secretary and treasu rer, the latter two ' for several tenns. The Y.M.C.A. club was closed in June, 1967, but reopened the followi.ng week a t Carden Suburb under :1 new name, the B-Bar·H.

Brian began the Westerners club at Birmingham Gardens in 1966, calling for the Newcas tle club in 1968 and the Kotara club in 197 1.

The B·Bar-H club holds its ··eekend square dance vaca-

'-rion each year with Brian as <..:aller and 'Vendy as secretarytreasurer since its inception as the Y.M.CA. Square Dance Camp II years ago.

Brian has been president and vice·presiden! of the BBar·H club for several /,ears and is now president a the Newcastle club.

RiJ!ht about now we m ust pause to wonder just how many hours this couple can cram into a week!

Brian is an office machine technician, whose outside interests re,'olve mainly around vou - know - what, building speakers, practising new records, and constantly improv. ing his already abundan! knowledge of square dancing.

N.S.W.: LEARN TO

Wendy enjoys garden ing, sewing and cooking and has recently had Quite a bit of experience chan2in~ nappies.

Brian and Wendy were married in December, 1967, and have "lived happily ever after'· - Wendy's very words to your reporter! They have one son, Evan, 18 months old, who can dance (?) and clap and is Quite adept at sleeping in a car at Ihe side door of a square dance hall.

A large room has recently been built on to the back of the Hotchkies' home and a [eamers dance is now held therein eve r y Wednesdav nigh t.

Brian now calls every Tues· day, Wednesday, Friday and Sa'turday night and runs a workshop on the fourth Sunday as well.

Of course there's always the club, 01' convention committee meeting to fill in the Monday or Thursday nights, so thev don't get bored.

Wend... is treasurer and Brian is publicity officer for the National Convention in Newcastle in 1973.

As for their thoughts on square dancing, they both en· joy the company of the manv friends they ha\'e made, the challenge of an advanced hoedown with plenty of variety, the many well-timed Singing calls, and the not-too'complicated round dances in between the squares.

Thi s is the second month in a row th:1t we have been pleased to w ri te about voungelcouples who are quite capable and willing to put their all into squa re dancing in order to follow in the tracks of all of our other Squa re Dancers of the Month.

ROUND DANCE

AT THE RENDEZVOUS (S6.e Diary)

"LA RONDE" --- THE ROUND DANCER "Lucky Thirteenth" Conven

tion has come and gone. This column, of course, wi!! comment only on the RID segment, but before moving on, may I congra tul:1te the convenor and his committee on :1 very interestin!!. convent ion. We saw a break from many of the a<..:cepted procedures; nOl all of them were howling successes, but were worth a try and the results will benefit fu ture con,'entions and the attendin~ dancers.

The rounds demonstrated during the convention were, in order of appearance:

N.S_W. Combined Clubs -" Roses for Elizabeth ".

Vic. Edna Batchelor RI D -"Bit of Heaven", " In Mv Dreams"_

Vic. Sunnyside RI D - "Love For Two" . .

Old. Carousel RID - "Sally", "Blossoms".

Old. Callers & Wives _ "Let Me Call You Sweetheart".

Vic. Callers & Wives -"'Raindrops" and special arran~ement by Ella Whyte and Merve Groves, "Love Is a Beautiful Song".

Presentations ,~'ere of high standard and we saw some de!i$(htful dances. Many of us baulked on seeinj!; "Salty 0 0:1." and "Hully Gully" listed, but don't the \'ounJ! ones love them! Floor packed and really jumping.

"MississauJ!a Waltz Mixer". Blue Star Label No. 1797, was the dance taught with square dance clubs in mind. Callers will find this a good one and useful in ~i" in~ variety. Danc_ ers loved the lilt of the old tune, " It Happened In Monterey", 10 which this dance is SC I.

From New Zealand. Art Shepherd and his good wife

Blanche, have kindly sen t a list of rounds used at their various functions and conventions. Space will not allow lis ting here, but I will be happy to supply details to any interested dancers. Two I particularly noted were '·Ra indrops", which we saw at the com'enlion and the beau tiful "Moon Over Naples". Thank you, Art and Blanche.

From Victoria , ,news of a ViSit by American friends, Belh and Frank Albert to Edna Batchelor's Club. From Califomia, they ha\'e Eddie and Audrey Palmquist, top choreographers for 1971 , as thei r teachers. Beth and Frank showed a number of the classics while hcr~. Edna dances weekly, Thursday nights, and visitors are always welcome to the club.

To hand from the States, a brochure on the 9th . "Star Span$!led Banner Festival", August 18th, 19th, 1972, sponsored by the Mason Dixon Square Dancin}!; Federation. Prices seem to be on a pat· with us, but we miss out on a 7% tax on accommodation. Not a word to your local member about this one. Note also the RI D "rooms" and SI D "halls". Could this be some· thin$! to do with noise levels? No, Ihev are no t smaller.

Not shown o.n the proj!ramme, but one of the highliJ!hts of the convention (I saw it with my own eyes cou ldn't believe them though), Geor!!.e and Noeleen Gow in a remarkable rendition of the "Salty Dog Rail". Made my day. George, you were wonderful!

Happv Dancing! -~ TIME.

QUEENSLAND'S NATIONAL CONVENTION PROFIT

By GRAHAM RIGBY <; At the first meeting of the 1972 Convention Committee, it was unanimously agreed that the ticket. cost would be minimal and $7.50 was decIded upon. There were those who maintained that we couldn't pos&lbly run a convention so economlca.lly, but thanks to our most astute treasurer, Jack Smith, we

finally balanced our books, showing a profit of $1315.45. The moral DC this success story Is; "Keep your ticket costs down - that way you get a maximum at.tendance, and t.he convention profits, bot.h socially and fina ncially."

BUSINESS SESSIONS AT CONVENTION Observers at the recent 13th National Square Dance Con

vention, held in Brisbane, might have thouq ht the business senion would ha ve been better held by ha ving pistol s at fifty paces between N.S.W. and Queensland, and certainly there have been some words said in recent weeks concerning the business session.

The president of the N.S.W. Society summed it up beautifully, later in the day, by saying that despite any differences the N.S.W. people might have had, we all thought the 13th was a magnificent convention.

The purpose of wrttlng this article is to explain to the various square dancers in other States, what happened and what was being endeavoured to achieve.

Most people come to square dance conventions to enjoy square da ncing and to meet their friends and renew acquaintances from other States. It can be said apart from contentious matters such as changing of movements or where the next convention will be held, most of the people are not particularly Interested in the business session.

However, it must be remembered that but for the formation of groups such as the Square Dance Society of Queensland, the Square Dance Society of N.S.W., the Square Dance Callers Association of Victoria and t.he like, the creation of the Square Dance Review and the establishment of the first convention In canberra by the Square Dance Society of N.S.W. with the co-operation of Graham Rigby from Queensland, the magnificent conventions which we are now holding in Australia wou ld not be held.

COnventions do not just run themselves and indeed States do not just run conventions. The high quality of the conventions we hold today has only been as a result of very careful planning and discussion by many, many people over the 13 years. The organisation which has to go Into the¥ convention nowadays as compared with the early days is unbelievable and perbaps the average dancer could best unders~and this if it was pointed out that the cost of merely providing the meals at the 13th National Convention would have exceeded the cost of the total services provided at the 1st, 2nd or 3rd National Conventions.

Few people realise the creation of Australian Square

ance Conventions and the

Square Dance Review had resulted In a stabilisation of Australian ::quare dancing never thought possible. Unt!! the coventions were established the States knew little about each other and the standard of dancing differed tremendously. Our standards and our ways of doing square dancing as a result of conventions has improved to such an extent that the general standard of dancing at the 13th National Convention reached a new all time high. The co-operation between various groups williIn each State has also reached a peak not thought possible ten years ago.

This did not come about just as a result of a get-together but more as a result of discussions at the various seminars, discussion panels and annual general meetings that have been held over the years.

Just recently the Square Dance Society of N.S.W. held its annual general Ill,eeting at which time the problems that arose at the W.A. Convention were discussed and various motions were passed to be submitted to the 13th National Convention. The executive committee of this society feels that every State should do this every year and perhaps it is the fact that every State does not do this that gives the impression to a vast number of dancers that N.S.W. is tryi.ng to run the . National Convention. This is not the case. It is merely that the Square Dance Society of N.S.W. realises the necessity to have all matters properly debated and discussed at the annual meeting.

A series of motions were prepared for submission to the annual meeting of the convention with the idea of bringing up La date the constitution and solving some of the anomalies. These motions included the following:

1. A motion to include Perth on the executive committee.

2. A motion which would standardise the colours of every State, t.hereby eliminating the complaints by many about the colours being changed each year.

3. Introduce a clause which

would permit the constitution to be amended correctly (At the present moment the constitution does IlCit have such a clause and this was noted at the W.A. COnvention).

4. A clause which ensured the continuance of records by the appointment of Ella Whyte of Victoria as the official record keeper. {Notice of motion given at the Perth Convention'.

Many were also most concerned the convention programme this year comblned all discussion topics with the annual general meeting. This resulted in two problems:

1. The discussion period became too long which made people intolerant.

2. At the Perth ConvenUon the opinion was expressed that then was insufficient time given for general business. Less time was allocated In Brisbane.

Also points or view from various states were not sought for the discussion groups. Indeed, the speakers only became aware that they were to speak on the particular subject when they were asked to speak by the chairman. This meant. that there was no preparation whatsoever and aU aspects of the discussion topic were not covered.

Of particular importance was the Square Dance Review to be discussed and a person from Queensland was called upon to give criticism of the Review without the co-ordinating editor being advised what the criticIsm would be. Many comments were made concerning the operation of the Square Dance Review without N.S.W. being afforded the oPPDrtunity of replying. Had there been sufficient tlme the Square Dance Society of N.S.W. would haVe requested the Review become a speclal topic as It is felt there are many aspects of the RevIew which are not being properly conveyed to the dancers In gellera!.

Opinion has been expressed at the last two convent ions that It Is necessary to run more than one fuctlon at once. Our conventions have grown to such a stage it Is possible to run discussion groups, seml-

N.S.W.,

nars, annual general meetings~and the like In one hall for those people who are concerned about the general administration of square dancIng and run a separate func~ tion, either square or round dancing, In a separate hall. It is also felt by some people it should be posslblC to have square and round dancing running separately In different halls. It is also felt it is necessary to run workshops as well as general square dancing.

Under no circumstances must dancing take precedence over the annual general meeting or discussion panels. Adequate time allocation must be made for these and as far as the annual general meeting is concerned, every endeavour must be made to ensure that all reasonable discussion is permitted and motions are not bulldozed through. The general business session must not be closed on the excuse that we must get on with the dancing. Notices of motion given at one annual general meeting must be correctly presented at the next annual general meeting and it is the responsibility of the Convention Committee to ensure that this happens. These are the reasons why dancers may have felt N.S.W. members were being difficult.

Some people may say that groups, States or even individuals such as myself waste too much time at these conventIons. I apologise if I have bored anyone but might I point- out re.$pectfully and with hurnUity that if actions like these had not been carried out in the past you would not have the Square DanCe Society of N.S.W. or any other society. you would not have the Square Dance Review and you would not have the Australlan National Convent ions.

SQUARE DANCING AT OXFORD FALLS

Oxford Falls School has the unique distinction of being the only one-teacher school in the Sydney metropolitan area . One of our well known square dance enthusiasts, Grace Thompsoll, puts a lot of time and effort into teaching the youngsters of the school square dancing, and her efforts were recently rewarded by a visit to the school by the Current Affairs TV team, who interviewed Mr. Ian Whitt, their go·ahead master.

A very Impressive TV screening Included a demon· stratton of square dancing by theSe youngsters. School's open day will be the scene ot another demonstration by these youngsters for the benefit ot their parents who wlll be Invited to joIn In.

GOLD COASTERS " The Tale of a Bolot Tie" When we arrived on the

Gold Coast, some 18 months ago. we could find no activity In the square or round dance. We commenced dancing old time at t he Pacific Hotel.

Wearing a Bolot TIe I found was a symbol of square dancing, soon I had people interested.

Now, after eight weeks of starting a club, we have three squares or dancers enjoying squares and rounds. at the Pastime Hall. lOth Avenue, Palm Beach, each Friday. Tel. 34-1181.

BEGINNER'S REFLECTIONS

Dear Editor, I don·t know whether "let

ters to the Editor" are reguJar features of the Review, but 1 wanted to congratulate those who produce the paper, and say how interesting I found i t. especially the gen· eral articles on square dancing.

I am a beginner in the world of square dancing, and found "BUly's Welcome Beginners" article great (June edition). Agree wholeheartedly with what he says, It certainly is great to &:0 and forget all your troubles. When I wmt my first nIght, I COUldn't beUeve It was so hard. I'd seen simple stuff on TV. but this - what seemed like hundreds of ellfferent- steps, all at a neck· breaking' speed. to a caller I couldn·t even understand.

How things have changed in a few weeks. I've found the caller even speaks English. I can get through about 50 of those "75 basics" that were listed. Each week I go hom!:' and mark off a few more that I've learnt. It·s marvellous to meet so many frIendly people. I've found It very true that people don't worry when you make a mistake - you are pushed, puJt~ ed or shoved Into the right spot, and the dance goes on.

So to all you square and round dancers. lucky you for having such a wonderful pastime. and thank you fo r Introductlng me to It.

SQUARE DANCERS OF THE MONTH When we want information on our Square Dancers of the

Month, we go right to the source. "THEM!" We receive very sketchy replies and some long ones, from these we write our articles. Our dancers are always too modest - even the callers!

This month's Square Dancers of the Month letter so im· pressed us, we decided to forgo our usual formal and reproduce their story in their own words. From West Australia:

COLIN AND JOAN CROMPTON Dear Tom,

Thank you for your leuer. We are very pleased to have vou choose us for Square Dancers of the Month, al· thou~h we feel you must have a [at of others who have done more for square dancing than we have.

We wouJd prefer it if you would write the article as it is very much out of our line. We are just an ordinary couple who love our square danCing and the people we dance with.

I will try to give you a little background on our square dance life. In 1963 we became involved in square dancing through two o ld friends who were at us for months to go square dancinjl; al White Gum Valley. The caller was the late DOll Shadforth for whom we had, "as we got to know him", a great respect for his caUing and teaching and of himself. He had a wonderful approach to squa re dancing.

Joan does aU the door prizes and raffle buying and does a lot around the place that goes 10 make a very enjoyable dance.

In 1971 I became President of Ihe Square Dance Society of West Australia. This, I think. was a wonderful thing. because this was our conven· tion year and here was the opportunity to be doing somethin~ towards our convention.

I took the post of Fund Raiser on the convention Com· mittee and this was a very rewarding job. We had a lot of fun doing this. 1 can say that the people of whom the convention Commitlee was formed were thc most won· derful T have worked wilh and I had no doubts about the success of the convention as everybody did their job well and I was proud to ha\'e been part of it.

Joan and I have a wonderful family life. We have a son and a daughter and the four of us arc square dancers.

Colieen, our daughter, was the first Secrctary of the White Gum Valley Square Dancc Club. She held the post for Ihe year. She did not stand for the second year.

Colleen is a member of the

verv comfortable and happy and friends are always welcomed - especially square dancers, as this appears 10 be tbe only topic spoken in our house.

Joan works as a shop assistanl in a hardware Siore every afternoon and it really helps her to pass the day now that the chilctrcn ha\'e grown off her hands.

We don' t ha\'e a hobb,y. un· less you caJ1 doing for our dancers all we can to make their dancing: at White Gum Vallev each Saturday, enjoy· able.

I play cricket each Saturday aflernoon and it has been a p;reat cnjoyment to me over the years but, I am afraid, I am CamillI! to the end and this year could be my last season. I ha\'e had a good innings and have a great love of the game.

One of our great thrills in square dancing was when . with a contingent of W.A. dancers. we went to the 1969 convention in Melbournc.

This was, to us, a great occasion. It was our first, and we were going to bid for the 1971 convention in Perth, where Les Johnson made the hid. We were all behind him and it was a convention that Joan and I. Colleen and Vau!,han, will never forget_ I think the first is always the best. -

Joan and I are both of Ihe same opinion when it comes 10 square dancing, and that" is. vou only get out of anything what you put into it, and this applies more in square dancing, as your fellow dancers cannot enjoy their dancing if you are not prepar-

ed to en iov yours. To my mind. a successful

dancer is the one that turns up every week because he realises that he or she is the dance and nOQody can enjoy their dancing if there is not enough to fill the sets. Think of the other dancers before vou rself.

Well, Tom, I do not know if I have given you enough, as 1 said at the start, we are only ordinary people who en· joy other people's company.

We are going to Brisbane for the convention. We should have! aboUI 3S dancers from the West, so we hope we will see you there.

Please excuse my phrasing as I am a lousv cOI·respondent. I do hope you can glean en· ough fl'Om these pages.

Give our love to Chick. We are lookin~ forward to seeing vou both in Brisbane.

Yours sincerely, Colin and Joan Crompton.

EDITOR'S NOTE : No article could have put

into words the sincere 10\'e of \.....sQuare dancing and the will· in!,ness 10 work for the good of square dancing Ihan this letter. It is not only the stOI')' of one couple. but of all the square dancers in West Australia, who have learned to pull together for the bcnefit of square dancing. A lesson Ihat some of the rest of our square dancing world could and should heed.

I am verY happy to be able to publish this letter and ven' proud that Chick and I can number the Cromptons as among our many square dancin~ friends.

r can remember Joan saying 1,0 me when we decided to take up square dancing that she did not want to be tied down every Saturday night. Well. Tom

h that is nOI so to

day, as s e never misses a Saturday night or a chance to attend a dance whenever pos· sible. We always had a few friends but. since square dancing came into our lives, we have made a good many more and 1 think, lasting friend· ships.

We, in West Australia, are very proud of the way square dancing has grown over the last few years. This, of course, became real only because of the hard work and time put in by a few avid dancers after the death of Don Shadforth and they can take grcat credit for the amount of clubs we have today. I don't think there is a club here in the west thai these dancers were not there 10 make it a going concern.

So when you asked the question, what club do we belong to? I can only say we are members of them al\ - but our club is White Gum Valley of which I am Presidenl and Joan is on the Committee. I have been President of White Gum Vallev since it became a club in 1969 and ha,'e one year to sen'e before comi ng UP for election. I ha\'e watched the club ,erow to a very successful one and am ,'en' proud to be President.

State colours were introduced at the Melbourne conven· tion in 1964. The idea then was for all States to adopl these same colours every year. A com'ention book was introduced in Newcastle in '63, and this book was to hold the Con· \'cntion Minutes and any other information that could help other States organising a can· vention.

The State colours were en· tered in[Q this convention book, but unfortunately, the book did not arrive in time for the following conventions, or the committees neglected to read up this information.

So now all this confusion remains. The colours were cor· rected again in Melbourne in '69. and again this same thing happened. Now it has been suggested aftcr all this time that we ha\'e the sporting col· ours of thc States.

T feel that it is a bit late to start now. seeing that Vic· toria has tried hara to keep

the original colours and intre>duced them to conventions in the first place, more interest _ should have been taken years a~o. I feel that Victoria should be given a bit of con· sideration and that more time should have been allowed at the Brisbane convention meetina to sort th is all out.

May r suggest to Newcastle that we have the general business earlier in the meeting and keep the discussion topics to the end so that enough time is JZiven to important issues fhal need to be sorted out at that lime.

I personally do not like the sportinJ't colours, some are too drab. Why can't we stick to the original colours that were first introduced. They are as li sted below.

Queensland : YeUow. S.A .~ Blue. N.5W.: Green. TAS.: White. Victoria; Red. W.A.~ Oranjo!e. International~ Silver.

It Is with regret we accept the resignation of our past president, Ken McKenzie, and his good wife, Molly, who find commitments are interfering with their square dance nights. So we welcome Claude Strange as our new president and promise him every support.

Member. George Bell, has been on the sick Ust and now home, after a month's hospitalisation, hope to see him back dancing very soon.

EDITORIAL The Gows write the lion's share of the editorials, bless

'em, but now and again they insist that I do something to show that I'm on the team; and as I want to keep on the right side of those giant golden Labradors who guard the Gow menage, here I am in print again.

Well, what's there to say, we're manag ing to get your Review out on time each month, we seem to have all the Slate Diaries with all the correct information (I'm keeping my finge rs crossed as I write that), thanks to Graham Rigby we've been able to include photographs in the July and August issues and we try 10 make the Review as varied and interesting as we can within the financial limits set for u,.

We know thaI square danCing is growing throughout Australia because we are receiving more dance dales to include in the various State Diaries, and in this connection, it's very pleasing to see Northern Territory staging another weekly dance. Cong ratulations to all of you out there at The Al ice. We were also pleased to receive your contribution on your impressions of the convention. Don't let that be the last. Let us have something 10 print about the square dance scene there, with all the local colour which is so different to that of the older, more settled cities.

In fact, let all States send plenty of material to us. If it's about square dancing and/ or sq uare dancers and it's print. able, we'll see that it's included whenever space permits.

We believe that the Review is maintaining a hign standard as the standard bearer of square dancing in Australia and with your cooOperation we intend 10 keep it that way.

Kind Regards, Bill BINNS.

AT THE RENDEZVOUS (See Diary)

I feel that rounding up Is a much friendlier and fairer way of forming sets, particularly tor those who have no partners. these people, no doubt, would be by-passed In the square-up method and would thus become discouraged and give up square dancing.

. OVerseas \'isltors have frequently commented on our round-up method and have generally considered It much friendlier and more pleasant than squarlnp'-up.

Meeting people from Interst-ate and other clubs in the round-up and the fr iendly chit chat that goes on whilst "promenading" around Is all part of the ev<>ning's pleasure and Is not really wasted time, maybe you don't get In the best square but at least you are mixing and meeting.

There is no doubt a place fo r square-ups as weU as round· ups and an Ideal arran!!"f>ment would appear to be two or three square -ups sD"cpd throueh the evenln~ "dth a couple of round-ups. but PLEASE not an entire eVElling or sQul\rlne UD.
