TEENAGE DREAM: Tonight will mark the Major League debut
for Dodger left-hander Julio Urias, who today officially had his
contract purchased from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Urias
(pronounced oo-REE-ahs) is ranked by MLB.com and Baseball
America as the Dodgers’ No. 1 prospect and the second and fourth
overall prospect in baseball, respectively. The 19-year-old (19
years, 289 days) will become just the second teenager to start a
game in the Major Leagues this century, joining Felix Hernandez
(19 years, 118 days), who debuted in 2005. The last Dodger
teenager to appear in a game was Fernando Valenzuela, who
made his debut out of the bullpen on Sept. 15, 1980 at 19 years,
319 days. The last Dodger younger than Urias to make a start was
Dick Calmus, who took the mound at Dodger Stadium on Aug. 23,
1963 vs. Milwaukee at 19 years, 228 days. – Source: Stats, LLC.
Urias was 4-1 with a 1.10 ERA (5 ER/41.0 IP) in eight
games (seven starts) for Triple-A Oklahoma City and was
in the midst of a 27.0-inning scoreless streak at the time of
his call up. He had 44 strikeouts against just eight walks
and tossed 5.0 scoreless innings in his last outing a week
ago vs. Salt Lake City.
Urias hails from Sinaloa, Mexico, the birthplace of former
Dodgers Juan Castro, Antonio Osuna and Dennys
Reyes. The game tonight will be televised in Mexico on
ESPN Deportes.
Urias will become the first Dodger to wear No. 78.
In order to make room for Urias on the 25-man roster, the
Dodgers optioned left-hander Luis Avilan yesterday. In
order to make room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers
today transferred right-handed pitcher Yimi Garcia (right
biceps soreness) to the 60-day disabled list.
