On May 1st, Guilford staff will have initial articulation conversations regarding students and their growth. These conversation help to prepare us for student groupings for the 2015-2016 school year. Should you wish to share additional considerations related to how your child learns best, please email ([email protected]) or send those thoughts in writing (sealed envelope)  to Dr. Varlack on or before May 1st. As you share those items in writing please refrain from requesting specific teachers as teacher assignments change as does the student groups assigned to them. Communication should be based on considerations for what your child needs to thrive academically.

Bingo tickets are now on sale! Information has gone home in your child's Friday Folder. This event is on May 16th, 6:00 p.m. at the Ridgely’s Community Center. Our Bingo has sold out in the past, so don't delay! If you have questions please contact Lori Hall at [email protected].

Congratulations to Hadi Ahmed for being our April volunteer of the month! Mr. Ahmed received a gift card in appreciation for his help with class picture day.

The GES PTA will be holding a general membership meeting on June 9, 2015 at 7 pm in the Media Center. We will be voting on officers and committee chairs for the 2015-2016 school year at this meeting. Please join us!

The GES PTA is working on filling officer and committee chairs for the 2015-2016 school year. If you are interested in helping us plan family events, raise funds, update our social media presence, or help with a specific grade, please contact Rachel Smith at [email protected].

Thank you Guilford families for sending in your box tops. We had 1034 valid box tops submitted for the month of March. Congratulations to 2nd grade for submitting the most box tops. K-87; 1st-218; 2nd-335;  3rd-98; 4th-38; and 5th-203.  We need 3000 more box tops to meet our goal for the year, so continue to send them into school.

FIELD DAY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!!

     Guilford Elementary School will hold a Minion Field Day on Friday, May 15th, (rain date: May 22nd).  We are in need of over 60 volunteers to run our Field and Blacktop stations.  Lunch will be provided for all volunteers in the media center on this day.  The volunteer schedule is:

Session #1 - 9:15– 11:00 a.m.   -  29 volunteers for the field and blacktop stations, (Grades K, 1, & 2 are at the blacktop stations & Grades K, 1, & 3 are at the field events)  

            - 1 to 2 volunteers to escort the a.m. Pre-K students   Session # 2 –   11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.              -  29 volunteers for the field and blacktop stations (Grades 3, 4, & 5

are at the blacktop stations & Grades 2, 4,  & 5 are at the field events)

Quarter 4 P.E. Homework - All students in grades K- 5 should have received their Quarter 4 P.E. homework.  This month we are working on staying active for 60 minutes every day.  Please help your student list their activities and sign the homework after seven days.  Thank you for helping Guilford stay healthy and fit!!!

Marathon Kids News - All students in Kindergarten - 5th grade should receive a second Marathon Kids running log to keep track of any walking or running they participate in this spring.  (The first log was completed at school.)  One mile of running is equivalent to 20 minutes of any active game or practice.  Please help your students complete the mileage and fuel log and turn it in by June 1st for extra credit in P.E.  Thank you for your support!!!

Title I News – Next month we will be asking parents to fill out the EOY Parent Involvement Survey. It will be available to complete online and in paper form. Please take the time to complete this survey. We will use the information to plan our family events for school year 2015-16.  Please look for that form to be coming home in the Friday folder in May.  We will also have translated documents available upon request. Future Golden Bears - Time to Register for Hammond High School Booster Camps!Hammond Boosters offers ten week-long summer camps to rising 6th through 9th

graders who will be Hammond High School Golden Bears. 

Camps offered: Band, Baseball, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Cheerleading, Cross Country, Football, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Volleyball.  All camps are held at Hammond High School and are one week long.

$135 Early Bird registration fees for those who register by May 31st; $155 registration fee beginning June 1st.  Fee includes a Hammond HS Booster Camps t-shirt.

HCPSS Kindergarten Registration – Register Now!—Registration for students entering Kindergarten in Aug. 2015 is ongoing. Parents or guardians are to register students at the school serving the address where the child’s parent or guardian resides. Please visit http://www.hcpss.org/schools/kindergarten-registration/ to see a complete list of documents required for registration.

Pre-K Application & Registration—The Howard County Public School System offers a Pre-K program for income eligible children who will be four years old by Sept. 1, 2015.  Applications for the 2015-16 school year will be available beginning Mon., Mar. 2. RECC - RECC Learning Together Peer Program—Regional Early Childhood Center (RECC) preschool programs include children with and without disabilities who will be three or four years old by Sept.1, 2015. Children are selected based upon screening information given on the application form and the “Ages and Stages Questionnaire,” as well as observations of participation in a playgroup.  The monthly fee for the preschool program is between $150 and $270 monthly depending on the number of hours of participation in the program. Recreation and ParksRecreation & Parks has established local baseball teams for several age groups in your community.  We are writing to invite you and your neighbors to participate in the Columbia Baseball League (CBL). Kennedy Krieger We are recruiting children ages 8-12 to participate in an MRI research study to learn if there are differences between the brain’s structure and its function in children with and without ADHD as well as with and without High Functioning Autism.The study involves participating in 2 seven-hour days of paper and pencil tasks, computer activities, and a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the brain. Parents will receive a report of the IQ assessment administered to their child as well as the radiology report. All testing is done free of charge and you get to choose the dates you participate.
