ATTENTION ERA MEMBERS Bounced Check Policy

The ERA has always accepted personal checks as payment for purchases of merchandise and attraction tickets, as well as many ERA sponsored events. If your check is returned due to insuf-ficient funds, then you will be charged a $6.00 bank returned check fee. You will be notified by a member of the ERA staff and your check will be re-deposited the following Friday. If it doesn’t clear again, you will be charged an additional $6.00 fee. Unfortunately, if you write a check that bounces, you will no longer be allowed to write checks again to the ERA. You may use cash or credit cards only for all future ERA purchases. If we do not receive payment for your bounced check (including the bounced fee payment(s), then you will not be able to purchase any items from the ERA store or participate in ERA-sponsored events. Also, you will not get a refund for your membership in the ERA. The ERA appreciates your business, but we must also be financially responsible to limit losses to the ERA.

past year’s accomplishments as well as approve the budget for the following year and elect

next year’s members to serve on the Board of Directors. The venue is changed each time to

give members a variety of foods and surroundings. Recent venues include Tom Ham’s

Lighthouse, the Butcher Shop, and the Bernardo Heights Country Club. Recent speakers

include Col. Len Hayes (USMC Retired) who spoke on “The Geopolitical Chaos in the Mid-

dle East” and John Caruthers who is with the FBI and spoke on “Cyber Security.”

As an Association member you will also receive four quarterly Newsletters providing infor-

ERA MEMBER SPOTLIGHTEach month we will feature one ERA member chosen from member submissions or by request.  If you would like to be spotlighted, submit your story, poem, ar cle, or photo.  Send your submission to the ERA Newsle er Editor, Michelle Metschel at [email protected] with “Member Spotlight” in the Subject Line.  It will be at the Editors discre on who will be spotlighted each month.

This month I want to introduce Ramon Thomson.  Ramon is a Quality Engineer who works in EMS.  I was referred to Ramon as someone who had a really interes ng start to his marriage.  His story is below and I hope you find his story just as interes ng!

This is an outline of our trip:

A year a er we married in 2006, my wife and I traveled for about nine months.  We hatched the idea a er we met other people traveling for long periods of  me while on our honeymoon in Thailand.  In November of 2007, we quit our jobs, put our stuff in storage, and proceeded to spend our savings by traveling on a shoestring budget. The places we went are outlined below:

Central America:  Two weeks in Costa Rica with family.

South America:   Two and a half months. Star ng  in Peru con nued  south  through Chile  to Patagonia and con nued back north  through       Argen na ending in Buenos Aires.

New Zealand:  One month touring the north and south islands.

Australia:  One month driving along the East coast from Cairns south to Sydney.

Malaysia:  Two weeks in and around Kuala Lumpur.

India:  One month beginning in the south in Bangalore and traveling north into Nepal.

Nepal:  One month trekking around the Annapurna range in the Himalaya.

Thailand, Cambodia:  One month in the south of Thailand with a short visit to Cambodia.

What made you decide to do this incredible journey?

While on our honeymoon in Thailand I was inspired by people we met who were travelling for longer periods of  me.

Do you consider it life changing?

Yes.  I feel like my outlook on the world has changed for the be er, I realized that the world is not such a scary place and that people in oth‐er countries are a lot like us here in the US.

What were some of the most interes ng things that you saw while you were traveling?

For me, the most interes ng place culturally was India and the most scenic was Chile and Nepal.

During your trip, what was the hardest thing you had to overcome?

The hardest thing for us was ge ng adjus ng to traveling in India.  Ge ng used to the amount of people and chaos was at first overwhelm‐ing but we managed to adjust.

What was your favorite part of the journey?

My favorite part of the journey was seeing how people live in other countries and visi ng cultural sites and na onal parks.   The most fun and carefree part of the trip for us was when we rented a camper van and drove down the east coast of Australia caravanning with another couple we met.  We saw lots of cool wildlife, swam in the ocean most days, drank boxed wine, and camped out every night.

Would you do this again?  Alone or with someone?

I would definitely do it again, however, next  me we plan on taking our two daughters with us.

What did you learn about yourself?

Other than learning that I have a high tolerance for long bus rides? I guess I learned how to take life a li le slower and go with the flow when things are out of my control.

What’s the biggest takeaway from the whole adventure?

My biggest takeaway is that life is too short and you should enjoy it by doing things that make you happy with the people you love.

GUN CLUB NEWS

The Gun club recently held its firstevent at Poway Weapons and GearRange.

The event was an introduction to handguns and was targeted at the clubs first time shooters.

We had a great turnout with 12 members. They learned the basics of handguns, safety, proper shooting technique and then got to put some lead down range during an hour of practice and instruction.

It was fun to watch as some of them shot for the first time. Everyone had fun and did a great job.

The club is planninganother  training session soon. If you are interested please consider joining the club. The next meeting is July 9th at 12pm in A17‐1007.

3. E-mail ad(s) as an attachment to Michelle Metschel at: [email protected] with the subject line: “Newsletter Ad—[Title of Ad]”. Otherwise it will get missed as the editor sorts e-mails by subject.

4. Personal ads must have a GA ERA member affiliation and use a personal telephone number and not a GA business telephone number.

6. Advertising from real estate companies, lending agencies, or financial planning agencies is not accepted.

11.Please specify runtime when placing non-commercial ads. Non-Commercial ads will run 3 times and then are removed. If no time is specified for the number of months the ad is to be run, then we run the ad as space permits. Also, sometimes ads need to get moved around on the various pages. We do this intentionally sometimes to vary the look of the newsletter but sometimes just due to space necessity. Ads are located and sized in the newsletter according to space availability. Ads with expirations dates will be removed when they expire.

11.All ads need to be electronic, pdf preferred. Commercial ad size should be 3.5 x 2.0. If your ad is square or odd shaped please let us know and we will try to assist with sizing.

12.We are all volunteers and must juggle ERA responsibilities along with our regular GA jobs. If we make a mistake and miss something, we apologize. Please just let us know nicely and we will fix it.
