Join the TIBBS Advisory Committee!TIBBS is looking for a group of motivated, engaged graduate students to serve on our TIBBS Advisory Com-mittee. As part of the committee, you will be involved in planning TIBBS professional development program-ming, organizing and leading interest groups, making suggestions for improving the program, and leading subcommittees to complete various TIBBS initiatives. The committee will meet once per month, with occa-sional subcommittee meetings on an as-needed basis. Participants will gain experience in teamwork, leadership, collaboration, and a variety of other skills that are attractive to potential employers. The size of the committee will be limited to 12-15 students, and we are looking for representation from a variety of PhD programs at UNC. To apply for membership in the commit-tee, please send an email to Erin Hopper at [email protected]. In the email, please include 2-3 sentenc-es about why you would like to be a part of the committee or what you could contribute to the committee.

Announcing the New TIBBS Website!TIBBS is proud to announce the launch of our new website at tibbs.unc.edu! Please take a few moments to browse through the new site and see what our program has to offer. You’ll find our new calendar system,

which can be filtered to display seminars, events/workshops, and TIBBS events, our bioscience blog, which we incorpo-rated directly into the website, a list of upcom-ing events, a newsletter archive, and a resources page. Be sure to browse our new Career Center for an up-to-date list of job opportunities, postdocs, and opportunities for students to gain experi-ence as writers, teachers, or interns.

Many thanks to Christy Smith (Stunt Owl Stu-dios), who contributed the graphic design of the site, to Ryan Clare (Verti-zontical Studios), the web developer who created the site, and to the entire Office of Science, Training, and Diversity for their help with editing, testing, and

revising the site. As always, we welcome and encourage your comments and suggestions for improvement. Please send them to Erin Hopper at [email protected]. -------------------------

Let’s get acquainted with the new TIBBS website with a word scavenger hunt! The first UNC graduate student with a correct response will win a UNC water bottle, and five runners up will receive a delicious candy bar! To play, find the word specified in each of the numbered items below and put the words together to spell a special message from TIBBS. Email your answer to [email protected]. Good luck!

1. Write the word with the largest font size on the home page (tibbs.unc.edu).2. Open the June 2012 newsletter (http://tibbs.unc.edu/category/newsletters/) and write the last

word in the title of the June 9th Summer Movie at the North Carolina Museum of Art in the Cheap Things section. Now make the word plural.

TIBBS Trivia Contest: Name That Phrase!

Pioneering Postdoc ProgramsThe Organization for Tropical Studies in Costa Rica (of which UNC is a member institution) is searching for course coordinators. These positions are similar to SPIRE postdoc positions in that biology PhDs spend half their time teaching a course and half their time doing field research. Please read below for a descrip-tion of the positions.

The Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) is seek-ing applicants for the positions of Graduate course coordinator and co-coordinator for Tropical Biology:

An Ecological Approach in Costa Rica. This is an inten-sive, four or six week course in field research and tropi-cal ecology for 22 graduate students. This classic OTS field course, also called the “Fundamentals Course” has

trained tropical biologists since the 1960s. At its heart lie the highly regarded OTS “field problems” which focus on the formulation of feasible research ques-tions, experimental design, data collection, analysis, and oral and written presentations. More information about this course can be found here: http://www.ots.ac.cr/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=93&Itemid=393

Successful applicants will work closely with the p.4

Education Director and Graduate Program Coordi-nator the design and implementation, and will be responsible for teaching aspects of the course. The applicant has to be comfortable with developing and conducting short research projects with stu-dents and visiting professors in the field, and should have a good understanding of ecological statistics. Ideal candidates will have a wide understanding and knowledge of current tendencies in Neotropical ecology with a background in behavioral ecology, evolution, physiology, molecular field ecology, con-servation tendencies and climate change, such that they define and complement the expertise of invited specialized faculty to the course.

The Tropical Biology Fundamentals course will be offered in late December to early January (4 week course) and in June and July (6 week course) every year from 2014. Interested professionals may apply for several courses in the coordinator position or as co-coordinator. The application deadline is open until we find a successful candidate

To apply, please submit the following materials as a single document at the OTS website: cover let-ter describing your interest and fit for the posi-tion, CV, teaching statement, and 3+ references. For more information: http://www.ots.ac.cr/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=82
