The Retro LED gear tray from Harvard Technology provides a unique opportunity to upcycle luminaires fitted with older technology to a high performance LED light engine with a range of benefits and controls not available within HID technology.
The Retro LED gear trays offer a retrofit LED solution for SOX, SON, HQI and CFL lamps. Providing an impressive energy saving compared with existing luminaires, the range offers easy to install ‘Plug and Play’ solutions
designed to modernise existing HID street lights. Energy costs are reduced without the need to replace existing columns and lanterns.
The lantern-specific gear tray holds a 12, 24 or 36 LED light engine and lens, powered through an integrated electronic driver, with CMS control from WIMAC or DALI. Fixed output, smart night dimming or CMS compliant options are also available.
There is an ever-increasing drive to reduce costs both in energy terms and to continually reduce carbon emissions across many sectors. Harvard Technology’s Retro LED solution provides unrivalled performance within an existing luminaires shell. The solution reuses existing luminaires in their current positions, using a range of LED lighting to provide cost efficient, high-performance, lighting that is both visually superior to its predecessors, which use HID. Optimum energy performance is ensured due to adjustable, tunable lumen outputs, coupled with maintenance factor harvesting which maintains a
consistence light level for the duration of the fixtures life, reducing both carbon emissions and light pollution. Lighting standards are met without over lighting, which results in increased power consumption over product life. Constant lumen output can be achieved by programming the driver to provide a constant controlled power level to the LED, avoiding excess lighting at the front end of the light engines lifecycle. As lumen depreciation becomes evident, the output is increased to offset that depreciation, ensuring the lamp is operated at a constant mean or preset output. Such an approach can save as much as 20% of 50,000 hours projected life.

Low pressure sodium lanterns are still in place in large quantities. Replacing the lamp and gear with a modern LED engine and driver, with a new clear glazing, can extend the life of the case aluminium luminaire body that is left. This also offers a new appearance and lease of life for the assets. The general geometry of a LPS lamp scheme is different as they tend to have a front of Kerb position and 15 degree tilt in the bracket arm.

Cosmopolis example
Cosmopolis lamps provide a high CRI and efficient lumen efficacy, but even this lamp can deliver savings in energy and carbon when replaced with a LED Engine. Further savings are achieved through reduced inspection and cleaning costs, as well as decreased costs for hardware installation thanks to an extended product life. A simple comparison of single standard road geometry has been used for the below example, with three options applied to show the savings.

.Lumen Packages There are two approaches to specifying the Retro LED:
The first is designed base, where a section of road or area project is calculated utilising design software, taking into consideration luminaire positions, mounting heights and BS 5489 standards in terms of lighting level requirements. Selecting the appropriate Retro LED lumen package and applying the SP ratio within the design software where appropriate to meet the identified standard. To provide a constant lumen output performance based on the area classification from the lumen package selected. The second is to replace the lumen packages, like for like, on the basis of the existing luminaire lamp type. The luminaire lumens are replaced with an equivalent output LED light engine. This generally applies to town and city centres where higher lighting levels are usually being applied. This still has the SP ratio and constant lumen output applied, but ultimately enables the same lighting level currently applied to be replicated with LED. Lighting levels can then be dimmed and tuned to meet current standards. Through CMS control pre-set lighting levels can be overridden where higher lighting standard are required, such as in the event of an incident or accident. By dimming lights to a greater level and therefore reducing thermal impact within the LED engines, they are not overrun and the product life is significantly extended.

The calculation above is the formula required to calculate accurate MF (Maintenance Factors) based on environmental considerations relating to dirt and external pollutants, mounting heights and positions. The technical considerations from the LED manufacturer, the luminaire and driver manufacturer and the combined thermal impact of these elements when combined into a package and the effect on the depreciation of output and the projected life of the luminaire package. Please refer to manufacturers data sheets and BS5489 for all of the appropriate parameters to arrive at the correct factor.

Photometric Performance The LED engines are selected by application; these are attached to an anodised aluminium replacement gear tray. The driver and termination is included. The trays are tested within the luminaire EMC and Thermal compliance photometry. Products are fitted with a clear glazing, where applicable, as part of the measuring process, which delivers an IES and a LDT file, both of which are used in exterior lighting design packages. Photometric files are available on request and lumen packages can be superimposed within the design software to reflect driver and milliamp current variation.
The Harvard Retro LED has been designed to slot into an Evolo 2 luminaries to upgrade them to LED with excellent payback periods.
The Harvard Evolo 2 - dual module gear tray have been designed and engineered with easy installation a plug and play solution that provides a >70 CRI coupled with 4000˚K colour temperature and a Lighting design SP ratio of 1.7. One panel and two panel versions depending on lumen requirements Suitable for replacing up to 150W Son and 140W Cosmo retrofit.
Storage temperature (Ta) ranges from - 40˚C > + 65˚C this should be a dry clean environment to ensure the electronics remain in pristine condition for use. The operating temperatures (Tc) ranges from - 20˚C + 35˚C, tests for thermal compliance have been carried out and Certificates of conformity are available upon request to comply with the CE classifications on these products. All relevant tests are carried out within the luminaire body to ensure compliance.
