Tennessee ID Services Coming to Tellico Village The State of Tennessee offers a unique opportunity for Veterans called the “Highways for Heroes Program.” Through this program, Tennesseans are able to take advantage of various identification services right in the comfort of their own community. No traveling to a nearby town to wait in line at the DMV.

On Thursday and Friday, July 14 and 15, the Tennessee mobile unit will be set up in the parking lot at the corner of Chota Road and Highway 444, immediately in front of the Lakeside Real Estate offices. The mobile unit travels the state to issue Veteran designated driver licenses and Commercial Driver Licenses (CDL) to eligible Veterans and Service Members.

Even though the program is designed to bring these services to Veterans, all Villagers are invited to participate. If you need a driver’s license updated or handgun carry permit re-issued, here’s your chance. For Veterans, be sure to bring: DD214 for information transfer to driver's license; card or letter with you for proof of service and Honorable Discharge. For others, be sure to bring: proof of identification and residence; Birth certificate; Utility bill; Insurance statement; Tax record; or anything with address confirming the address.

The mobile unit will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days.

This opportunity is brought to you through the efforts of Gerald Edgell, a Lions Club and VFW member. Other agencies and individuals involved in this effort are: Loudon County Clerk - Darlene Russell; VFW Post 5150 -

Commander Jake McKee; VFW Post 12135 - Commander Tom Quinn; Lions of Tellico Village - King Lion John Diehm and Margaret Holcomb Van Wormer; and Lakeside Real Estate Group Owner - Mike Ruppert.

If this first effort to bring Highways for Heroes to Tellico Village works well, we may see them back in the near future.

Submitted by Karen Brown for Villagers wishing to play bridge.

Permit Us to Help You: Shoreline Construction Permitting Here’s a reminder for waterfront property owners or potential buyers of waterfront property in the Tennessee River watershed.

Property owners need to have the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) review and approve planned shoreline construction projects on the Tennessee River and its tributaries before they start. This applies to commercial and residential owners, and includes docks, boat slips, marinas, shoreline

stabilization, as well as other projects. New property owners also need to contact TVA to obtain a permit for the existing shoreline facilities in their name.

It’s all part of TVA’s natural resource, land and navigation management responsibilities laid out in the federal agency’s charter legislation and designed to protect the Tennessee River system for the benefit of everyone in the Valley.

If you’d like to learn more about construction permitting and what’s required, please call (844) 264-8340 or visit tva.com/26aTellico.

Recent Events and Bragging Rights TV Lions make History

The TV Lions made history on Tuesday, June 28 when they installed their first female president in the 17-year history of the club. The individual making history was Lion Margaret VanWormer who will serve as King Lion for the 2016-2017 business year. She was sworn in by Past District Governor Jim McFarland. In accepting the position, the new King Lion stated “What is important about this event is not so much my taking the office of King Lion but rather it showing that Lions are not a ‘men’s only’ club. Women can serve just as effectively and help the club carry out its motto of ‘We Serve.’” King Lion VanWormer then went on to say, “I feel that since it is the Centennial anniversary of Lionism dating back to the occasion when Helen Keller, speaking at a Lions convention charged the Lions with ’being knights of the blind’ it is reasonable for us to have a female president this year.”

While installing the balance of the new slate of officers, PDG McFarland drew an analogy between a farm tractor and the officers who manage the club. “Just as all of the components of the tractor, the power train, the wheels, etc., have to work in concert to produce a successful harvest, so too does a governing board of an organization. It must work in concert with the King Lion to produce results that benefit the community and carry out the club motto of ‘We Serve.’” The photo shows, from left to right, the new King Lion, Margaret VanWormer, PDG Bill McFarland and the outgoing King Lion, John Diehm.

Helping King Lion VanWormer manage affairs of the club will be the following slate of officers:

1st Vice President – Lion Larry Elder

2nd Vice President – Lion Ed Roeber

3d Vice President – Lion Ron Lockhart

Immediate Past President – Lion John Diehm

Treasurer – Lion Ed Roeber

Secretary – Lion Harmon Towne

Club Membership Chairman – Lion Gerald Edgell, Jr.

Directors – Lions Ed Hostick, Tom Thomas, Chris Garner, Bill Adams, Dennis VanWormer, and Gary Stuart

Tail Twister - Lion Bill Cooley

Lion Tamer – Lion Randy Heiden

Publicity Chairman – Lion Dick Kolasheski

At a previous meeting the outgoing King Lion recognized a number of members for their contributions to the success of the club’s operations during the 2015-2016 business year. These individuals, who were presented a Lion Statuette served as officers last year. They included Lions Margaret Van Wormer, 1st vice president, Larry Elder, 2nd Vice president, Ed Roeber, 3rd Vice president, Directors Ray Harris, Merlyn Knepp, Jim Jeswald, Ron Lockhart, Chris Garner and Ed Hostick, Lion Tamer Ray Harris, and Membership Chairman Bruce Johnson. The last award presented by Lion Diehm was Lion of the Year; the award was presented to Lion Dick Kolasheski in recognition of completion as several projects as well as for his performance as the Publicity Chairman. After being inducted into office the new KL presented the outgoing KL, John Diehm, a Lions golf umbrella in appreciation of his splendid service as King Lion.

The TV Lions meet on the first and third Tuesdays of every month at the First Baptist Church in Tellico Village. The first Tuesday meeting is a morning meeting convening at 9:15 a.m.; the second meeting is a dinner meeting, convening at 6 p.m. The dinner meeting normally features a guest speaker. You can learn more about the TV Lions by visiting their web site at http://tellicovillage.tnlions.org/ or by contacting their membership chair Gerald Edgell via e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at 865-556-8523.
