Greetings to everyone! If you have visited NSRCC recently and thought the frontline staff looked different, that’s because they were attired with newly designed uniforms. NSRCC has changed the staff uniforms to make it more vibrant and comfortable. The last design change was done more than 6 years ago and you can catch the glimpse of your favorite staff with their new look on page 9! Why not get your favorite “Aunty/Uncle”, “bros” and “sisters” to pose and instagram them?

Recent developments have affected our Club and NSRCC will undergo several changes to reconfigure our golf course and facilities. Please bear with us during the redevelopment as we work to make the Club a better place. I am pleased to inform you that there will be a new NSRCC smartphone app which you can download to access club’s information conveniently.

We would like to congratulate all of our Service Excellence Awards winners. They have been recognised by our members for their good service. Turn to page 8 to find out who are the winners.

June holidays are just around the corner, the club has a list of exciting events and activities for you and your family to take part in. Let your child understand the concepts and logic behind the tricks and experiments in The Super Heroes Magic and Science Adventure. They can also attend the free Multi-Sports Trial Class organised by Sports4Kids where it allows your child to explore the fundamental skills and basic co-ordination of sports like basketball and soccer. If you and your family love durian, then take the opportunity to travel to Perkan Nanas Kampong and indulge in their Durians Buffet! Details and more information on page 19.

With so many things going on, I’m sure you and your family will have a good time at the Club!

Till the next issue! Cheers!

A Thrilling Day Out At SeaP articipants of the Northeast Monsoon Grand Prix 2014 Series 2 were treated with an almost ideal sailing condition

when the regatta kicked off late morning on 15 March, Saturday.

The organisers were initially worried about the hazy and humid conditions that plagued Singapore two weeks before the event. Concerns were that it may dampen the racing outlook on race day. However, their worries were in vain as a change in wind direction offered the competitors with clear blue skies and excellent winds of up to 10 knots!

Out of the 38 participants that registered for the event, 20 of them were contesting in the Laser Radial class, while the remaining 18 competed in the windsurfing categories (RSOne 7.8, 4.0 Open and RSOne 5.5).

Laser Radial Senior DivisionFormer Olympic contender, Tracey Tan, enjoyed a fantastic day with multiple stellar wins out of the six races held, allowing her to comfortably secure the first spot on the scoreboards. Fighting tooth and nail for second place were James Tan and Daryl Goh. Their scores were separated by a mere few points throughout the regatta, but ultimately, it was James that took home the second spot, leaving Daryl with second runner-up.

Laser Radial ClassThe battle continued tough and close between all of the sailors from the Youth Boys and Youth Girls divisions. In the Youth Boys division, Koh Yi Kun put some good results together and achieved a string of wins to take first place. Second and third place went to Matthew Scott Lau and Christopher Ang respectively.

The action-packed day rounded up with a gathering onshore, where participants tucked into food and drinks while sharing their experiences out at sea. Many of them mentioned that they were very pleased with the preparation of the equipment by the team of helpful crew from Constant Wind.

Special thanks to the staff of Constant Wind and Singapore Sailing who rendered their support and made this event an extremely successful one!

RSOne 7.8 Open divisionYnez Lim appeared to be having her own race, leaving the rest of the windsurfers behind. She displayed superb techniques throughout the six races to take home first place, while Ruth Maw and Wilson Chai took the second and third places.

President’s Trophy

it was a sunny affair for golfers who turned up on 1st March to tee off for the first club event of the year - President’s Trophy.

P articipants competed based on four different categories, namely the Men’s Division A, B, C and D;

and the Ladies’ Division A and B.

The golfers that took part had to endure the scorching sun! The weather did not get anyone down as they braved through the strong rays of sunlight in order to attain the prestigious Overall Winner title.

Following the game, golfers gathered to enjoy a hearty dinner at Jumbo Seafood Restaurant. President of NSRCC, LG Ng Chee Meng graced the dinner and also give away prizes to the deserving winners, as well as champions of the President’s Trophy. LG Ng Chee Meng also presented certificates of appreciation to our Junior Golfers who represented NSRCC at the National and International Levels.

A lucky draw was held during the course of the dinner, in which Captain of the Greens Committee, Tan Kah Han, was invited to give away the top three prizes. The winners walked away with a Callaway Putter, Callaway X Hot 3 Utility and Callaway Starter Set 11pcs Gift Set.

We would like to congratulate all the winners and thank everyone for their continued participation. We hope to see you again at the next club event!

Recognizing a Child’s PotentialBy Phil Brew

Just watched the final of the Drive Chip & Putt Challenge held at Augusta National, Georgia, literally days before the start of the US Masters. Wow! Now that was so cool on so many levels. The scenes were surreal, we had youngsters from 7 years of age to 15, who had qualified from their regions all over the country, a total of 88 finalists stepped up to the plate and performed in skills challenges such as Driving, Chipping and Putting. Players from the Masters field were there getting their final preparations for the first major tournament of the year and there were these kids with their parents at their side using the same facilities of the hallowed grounds of Augusta. Their putting challenge were conducted on the 18th green with the famous pin position of a Sunday Masters. These kids would have seen it on TV many times.

Past champions were there to lend a hand, Adam Scott helped out with presentations, Bubba Watson randomly approaching kids and their parents to wish them well. And then there was the standard of play from these youngsters. Oh boy, I was taken aback by their demeanour, the control they had over their mental and emotional states, their actions and reactions, their swings, techniques....amazing, truly amazing. As a coach of the game and the fact that my lifelong dream of playing at Augusta in The Masters was unfolding right before my eyes, I was in awe. Some of them were interviewed; the way they held themselves was simply awesome, maturity way beyond their years. They spoke with clarity, with a beautiful passion, totally engaged in the moment, and obviously this had a lot to do with the strong influence from their parents, they had developed such a love for the game.

Then it dawned on me, how does one see whether a child has that something special to excel in golf? How do we recognize it? To begin with, interest has to come from within the child. There is no point in pushing them into it. You can expose them early to see how they react to the game and during this trial phase, I suggest you observe from a distance. Don’t crowd your child, give them space. One tip about that though – honestly, it is hard to get excited about golf from a Driving Range. It does not represent the essence of the game, it is merely a controlled environment to break the game up into pieces so we can teach it and you can learn it one piece at a time. The game is played outdoors in very interesting and different landscapes, so many variables that make the game challenging. Expose your child to the golf course and see how they react. If they show excitement, they’re in it for life; if they do nothing but complain about the hot sun and how tired they are, you should probably look for another game for them to try, they may not be ready for golf just yet.

If you do see a spark, stoke the fire. I don’t believe a child’s potential revolves around how hard one pushes them to try harder. It comes from within them, if they love it, if they enjoy everything about it, the bonding time with mummy and daddy, the challenge of the game, they will be self-driven. Even as a coach we are always aware of this fact of over-teaching and not doing enough inspirational type of instructions. It is the quickest way to take the genius out of the youngsters to suffocate them in technique. They need inspiration and then guidance is something they will yearn for.

Having been teaching here in Singapore now for 15 years, I have had the fortune to see the personal development from young to adulthood. The ones that have really stepped up to the plate have had a quiet demeanour, a focus that would impress any world class performer and then because of their deep seated belief in themselves. The size of their dreams just keeps getting better and better. I think of Reagan Png. Reagan was 14 years old when I first met him back in 1999. I recall a playing lesson with him, Quincy Quek and a couple of other boys Glenn Lee and Eugene Seah, all organized by Mervin Gallistan, one of the instructors and SAFRA’s Chief Marshal back then. They all played great. Reagan was the only one with a PC though, the others had handicaps. But something I saw that day about Reagan caught my attention. Even though he was outgunned by his friends, when he hit a poor shot you could see his discontent in his face in the form of a grimace, no anger shown above that. He wanted to play well so badly that although it killed him to hit lousy, it didn’t bother him. Reagan turned pro 2 months ago, Quincy about 2 years ago. They both have a deep burning flame in their belly. That’s what you need to excel, desire, lots of it.
