SS 586:2014 Specification for Hazard Communication for hazardous chemicals and dangerous goods

Amendment No. 1 to SS 586 : 2008 Part 3 : Preparation of safety data sheets (SDS)

• SS 586 gazetted as an ACOP in the WSH (Approved Codes of

Practice) notification Feb 2011

Key consideration:-

• Recognize GHS pictograms : helpful for multi lingual employees

• Warned of the nature of hazards (ie hazard statements)

• Recognize the hazards involved and be familiar with the new 9 GHS pictograms

• Understand the contents of labels (Full GHS label / Wkplace reduced label)

• Know where to find the latest SDS in the workplace

• Understand SDS information in each section and its function

• Understand the precautionary measures to be taken , e.g. First aid, emergency response measures etc

• Use of suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and how to maintain PPE

• Provide training to all target audiences (workplace workers/contractors-transporters, fire fighters, emergency responders)

• Keep a record of training /refresher training e.g once every 3 years
