To all in the Uplands Community,

It is hard to believe that next week will be half term! It has been a

very busy two months packed with activities and learning in and out

of school.

This week has been no exception. Success in the classrooms has been

reflected in our Secondary School Parent Teacher Consultations

whilst the Primary School have been out and about in Penang, and

Uplands continues to display its sporting prowess on the footbal

pitch.

May I wish you and your family a very enjoyable and relaxing half

term. We look forward to seeing the children reinvigorated and

rejuvenated on Monday 27th October.

Reports

It was great to see all of the secondary students exit the school gates last Friday with a sealed envelope in hand, eager to

get home to their parents so they could open their progress report….or for some, it was out of sight of the teachers, so

they could open their reports by themselves. All in all, I believe this report cycle has been extremely successful and a

students should now be able to set their targets and goals for the rest of the term, and hopefully, the rest of the academiyear.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Wednesday was a very busy day for all of the Secondary teachers, with many of them having over 70 Parent-Teache

Conferences throughout the day. Thank you to all of the parents who attended these very important meetings. I hope you

gained some valuable insight into how your child is doing this academic year and spent some time discussing this

information with them. I am always open to feedback in regards to the logistics of the day, so please do not hesitate to

contact me if you have some valuable tips to help improve the day for all of the Uplands community.

O15 Boys & Girls Football

Last Friday afternoon and throughout the day on Saturday, I was both extremely privileged and proud to watch our Boysand Girls Over-15 Football Teams participate in the Annual Dalat Football Tournament, held at the Penang Sports Club

The girls played some super, tough football and were undefeated in their round robin competition against the hosts and

ISKL. The boys absolutely dominated all of their games, easily beating teams of the caliber of ISKL, Mont Kiara and MAZ to

run out easy winners. This is my 8th academic year at Uplands and I have never seen a team play with such precision

finesse and confidence as this team. Congratulations to all of the players involved, as well as the dedicated staff; Mr Rober

Scully, Mr Dean Metcalfe, Mr Mick Hollis and Ms Justine Bell. I wish you all the very best of luck for the rest of the season

and the tournaments ahead.

Article of the Week

I found another great article on the BBC Website yesterday in regards to secondary school aged children using the Internet

Call for teens to self-regulate net use was published on Wednesday 15th October and was based around a study withregards to teenagers’ use of the Internet and the restrictions placed on them. Some of the main findings highlighted in

the article were:

Children who have positive offline relationships with their parents are more likely to navigate the web in a sensibl

way

Supportive and enabling parenting has a more positive impact than restricting or monitoring internet use

Teenagers left to self-regulate their Internet and social media use are more likely to teach themselves new skill

online and maintain positive online relationships.

It is extremely important in this day and age that all students are using the Internet wisely and are very careful in what

practices they are involved in. Please take the time to talk with you child about the correct use of the Internet and carefull

explain the effects it may have on them and/or others.

It was pleasing to meet so many of the Year 10 & 11 parents on Wednesday during the PTC day. The most enjoyable

part of the day was congratulating the students on both their academic results and their outstanding effort scores they

achieved. If you were unable to attend the PTC day or have any questions or concerns that went unanswered, pleasecontact either your child’s subject teacher or myself via e -mail at [email protected] to arrange a time to meet.

Straight after the PTC’s had finished, the U15 basketball teams were in action against POWIIS. A full match report is

available further on in this newsletter, but congratulations to the following Year 10’s and 11’s who took part: Felipe,

Jens, Mahon, Calvin, Caleb, Ernest P, Oliver R, Kengo, Chun Jo, Sibeak, Jia Wen, Shinta, Edwina and Priya.

Finally, congratulations to all of the students in Year 10 and 11 on a fantastic first half term. I wish you all a relaxing and

enjoyable half term break and look forward to seeing everyone nice and refreshed on the 27th of October!

Roar Sports

The U15 basketball teams were in action on Wednesday against POWIIS. It was great to have all the boys and girls

commit to playing considering it was straight after the PTC day. The boys were eager to win their first league game and

put into practice the skills and tactics they have been learning during their weekly training sessions. They started with

great promise and put the pressure on the POWIIS team but a few quick baskets from the visitors unnerved our boys

and they never really recovered. Despite some moments of great individual skill, the team went down 22-38.

The girls were trying to complete the double over POWIIS, having beaten them a few weeks’ back. Playing the first

competitive match on the new F-Block court, the girls continued their rich run of form and never really let POWIIS into

the game. Some great passing moves enabled the girls to run away 16-8 victors.

O15 Boys and Girls Football

Boys

The Dalat Cup was the first opportunity for us, the O15 boys, to get our hands on some silverware by showcasing

what we had practiced on the training ground. Unbeaten so far in the PSAC league, we were confident going into the

competition with the determination to win. During the group stage, our side faced MAZ who posed an early challenge

for us, holding us to a 3-3 draw. We then played Mont Kiara, who were worthy opponents but couldn’t contain our

sharp attack as we ended up winning the game 3-0. This put the Uplands boys in prime position on top of the table

after a promising day of football.

On the next day, we faced a familiar MAZ team in the semi-finals. Playing them in the group stages fell to ouradvantage as we knew the way they played and countered their game plan effectively. With some great passing play

and a rock solid defense, we sailed through to the finals, winning 5-0. With victory at our fingertips, we gave it all our

effort in the finals against ISKL, scoring two goals in the first half and a late goal in the second half to end the game

and finish the tournament on a high. Winning this tournament has given us momentum and motivation and hopefully

we can perform as well in the coming Phuket 7’s tournament!

Girls

Last weekend, the Uplands O15 Girls took part in our first tournament of the year: Dalat's annual 11 a-side

tournament. With a mix of girls from the A and B 7 a-side teams, we hadn't really played together as an 11 a-side

team before our first match against Dalat on Friday morning. After conceding an early goal, we fought back to draw 1-

1 with a goal from Niki Butterfield.

The next day we had to play 3 games, two against ISKL and another against Dalat. Our game against ISKL was quiteclose in the first half, with all of us warming up to the game; the score was 0-0 at half time. In the second half, we

played a lot more comfortably and 4 of our shots hit the back of their net (2 from Jasmin Dalsgaard, 1 from Vanessa

Gehrig and 1 from Niki), displaying our dominance. We then played Dalat again for a very close 0-0 draw with the

entire team connecting extremely well. The final game came just minutes after our previous one, and we needed to

win it to be overall champions. An incredible display of composure and strength in the first half saw India Petrucco

score the first goal for Uplands. ISKL later equalised, but we fought back with a great goal from Niki, to end the

tournament as the 'Spike and Strike Ladies Soccer Champions'! I'm incredibly proud of all the LADIES and look forward

to more brilliant football this academic year!

Monday Night Football

We have been running some ‘Slow Motion Football’ on Mondays evening’s, 8pm to 9pm, for the past month or so.

This is very much intended as a social kick-about, and parents are more than welcome to come along and join in. If

interested please bring along a blue and a white top.

With the Deepavali celebrationapproaching soon, Year 1i has beenbusy making decorations for this

festive season during their artlesson.They enjoyed making peacocksout of decorated ice cream sticks.



Year 5 had the privilege of hosting the primary assembly this week. The focus was the

attitude of cooperation. The skit entitled “Stone Soup” was performed to explain how

important cooperation is. Thus, people who cooperate make good decisions and choices.

The unit of inquiry which highlighted people’s cultural background and beliefs was linked to

traditional stories from around the world. The audience was entertained by puppets shows

and dances. Well done, Year 5.

Penang Trail Reflection

We were very excited about going for the first field trip in Year 5. We arrived at the Kapitan Keling Mosque first, the

mosque was very quiet, nice, lovely and pretty. In the Hindu temple, there were so many deities. Everyone was hungry

after that, so we stopped to have some yummy roti canai and the tarik (pulled tea). Then, we walked across the streets

to a Chinese Temple where people were praying to the Goddess of Mercy. When we went to the church, I thought I

was with my parents. It was a nice, white church. We learned that a lady was buried underneath the church. When we

came back, I was very tired but I was amazed that so many different cultures can be found in the same area and people

are living happily there.
