To all in the Uplands Community,

This week we were delighted to host the

Parent Information Evenings for our

Experiential Learning Programme Trips

which will be run just over a month’s

time.

We were fortunate that the founders of

both Fuze Ecoteer and Loola were able to

attend the meetings and were able to explain their

philosophies and backgrounds to the students,

parents and staff alike, as well as introducing the

exciting activities on offer. We are offering 6 very

different trips this year designed to test the students

in a wide variety of ways. This year all trips will

contain a “service” element culminating with the

Year 12 trip to Sumatra and all address the majority

of the IB Learner profiles.

We look forward to reporting the success of each of

these ventures later this term.

The haze has played a significant part of this week

disrupting many of our outdoor activities. Thank

you for your patience and understanding. Please

see the detailed information about our air quality

policy in the Secondary School news section.

Yours sincerely,

The ISP Schools Association Board of Governors would like to offer a very warm welcome to all

families and staff members new to our community. We hope your time here in Penang and with

us at The International School of Penang (Uplands), is both happy and rewarding. To all in our

community returning after the holiday break, Welcome Back! We do hope your holiday was an

enjoyable one and that you have returned to Penang feeling rested, refreshed and ready for yet

another busy and exciting year.

As always at the start of a new academic year, School has been full-on from day one. For those

new to the School, whether staff or students and their families, please do allow yourselves a little

time to settle-in and get used to the School and the community. Please bear in mind that a few

‘hiccups’ are normal at the start of a new School year as both ‘new’ and ‘existing’ staff and

students get used to navigating the campus, dealing with a new time-table and perhaps new

ways of doing things.

Looking at the first few weekly newsletters of the year we are reminded of just how much time

and effort, on a daily basis, goes into making Uplands the School that it is. While we are known

for our rigorous academic programmes and we are proud of our academic success, please do be

assured that we are committed to ensuring academic studies are well supported by a wide range

of extra-curricular activities, and that our students are given many other opportunities to excel

and be their best – be it in visual/performing arts or on a sports field.

We would like to congratulate all students who sat I.G.C.S.E. and I.B.D.P. external examinations

at the end of the 2014/2015 academic year. Once again, our students performed extremely well

in both sets of examinations, with some excellent results. In all, 49 students were awarded the

IB diploma, which translated to a very impressive 94.2% pass rate. Of those 49, 9 students

obtained a point score of 40 and above, and over 60% of candidates obtained a score of 34 points

and above. The average point score of 35.14 was, once again, well above the world average. This

meant that many of our Y13 graduating students were able to move on to top universities all

around the world. I.G.C.S.E. results were also impressive. Of the 91 candidates entered, with

593 entries in all, more than 50% were graded at A*- A, and just under 90% (89.4%) graded A* -

C.

We thank all students for their hard work and dedication and wish them well in their future

studies, whether it is here at Uplands or beyond. Thank you also to staff for striving to ensure

our curriculum is well delivered and our students well supported. We know that many in our

community work tirelessly to ensure that students at Uplands get the best education possible,

and we appreciate all the effort that goes into making every day at Uplands a successful and

rewarding experience for our students.

We are very happy to report that work on the new boarding facilities – blocks H and I of the Mah

Sing development adjacent to the current School campus, are almost complete. We look forward

to the official handover of the apartments, and will work to have them ready for occupation as

soon as possible.

Looking forward, the School will also welcome Council of International Schools (C.I.S.)

inspectors in the coming months. The Principal will ensure everyone is kept up-to-date with

any developments in this area.

As this is the start of a new School year, it is perhaps appropriate for us to remind the school

community that the correct channel for any questions/concerns about the day to day running of

the School should be through the Principal, Mr Matthew Bristow. The Principal will of course

inform the Board of any major issues which need our attention and where appropriate he will

also seek our advice.

Council of International Schools/ International Bacculaureate Accreditation Process

A gentle reminder that if you wish to learn more about the accreditation process we as a school

will be going through in the next 18 months, please consider coming to the UPTA Coffee morning

next Tuesday 8th September at 8.30am in the Park Royal Hotel. Here I will be explaining what

the process entails and how you as parents and stakeholders in our community can have a role

to play in this process.

I hope to see you there,

I trust everyone enjoyed the long weekend with Monday being a public holiday. Even though it

was a short week, it certainly seems that we have fitted the five days into four. Unfortunately

the “Penang haze” has played havoc with our outdoor activities this week and unfortunately

from all reports, it will be around for approximately the next two weeks. As a school we do have

a policy in place and we are assisted by the RAAF and their Environmental Officer, as well as

monitoring various websites ourselves. The RAAF monitoring unit will supply figures, the

frequency depending upon the severity of the haze.

Tomorrow will see the first year IB Diploma students participate in an “IB Day” at school, with

some activities being conducted in the local community. This will be an excellent opportunity

for the cohort to dissect all areas of the two year programme which lies ahead of them. The

students will also take part in team building and trust activities which will allow them to build

better relationships with their peers. A lot of effort and hard work has gone into the organisation

of the day and I would like to thank Mr Cartlidge, Mr North, Mr Mitchell and Mr Rose, as well

as all of the other teachers who will be assisting on the day.

Thank you to all of the staff and parents who attended the Experiential Learning Programme

Information Evenings which took place on Tuesday and Wednesday. I do hope that all of your

questions were answered effectively and that all parents now have a clearer picture in regards to

the efforts the Secondary Management Team are putting in to help Uplands become a great

school, not just a good school.

This week I have had quite a few meetings with the USC (Uplands School Council) executives in

regards to the upcoming Prom. This event will take place at the E&O Grand Ballroom on Friday

11th December. The USC is already working tirelessly in organising everything and are trying to

keep the tickets costs as fair and reasonable as possible; not an easy thing to do with GST and the

Page 5: Uplands School Weekly Newsletter - Term 1 Issue 3 - 4 September 2015

other increasing costs in Penang, however the E&O Hotel always support the school. It is quite

remarkable to be working with these students and the maturity levels they are displaying is

nothing but commendable. I look forward to liaising with them over the coming months and I

believe it will be another great Uplands Prom.

Report by: Lim Jian Wen

This past summer, I was given a wonderful opportunity to train with the Penang State

Women’s Football Team as they prepare to compete in the Piala Tun Sharifah Rodziah, a

tournament where national coaches are looking for players to call up to play for Malaysia.

After a few days of training with them, and some last minute arrangements with FAM, I

was fortunate to actually be on the Penang FA Team, and travel down with them to KL

to compete. I did not expect to be a starter as the other 19 players on the team have

already trained together for a much longer period of time, but I was lucky enough to be

in the starting lineup for all 4 games that we played. Although we lost all the matches

that we played, a coach from the national team informed our manager that he liked the

way I played, and would like to take me to join the team. It was a truly amazing

opportunity that I was given the chance to play with such an incredible group of girls,

and I hope to be representing Malaysia soon!

Have a great weekend

Homework: an academic and pastoral overview

The quantity and quality of set homework across the different subject areas is always a hot topic.

This article endeavours to summarise the expectations at Uplands with reference to our

Homework Policy and Procedures.

Importantly, homework is set with a purpose, it should be achievable and it is necessarily based

on previous skills and knowledge taught in classes. Homework is set regularly; it should be

completed punctually and to the required standard. It should be neat and well-organised using

the appropriate form and relevant subject book or portfolio. All homework should be the work

of the individual student and it should be completed in a timely manner. Being organised with

a homework schedule means that students are not completing homework at the last minute, for

example during break times, immediately before morning tutor time or attempting to complete

homework during tutor time. Teachers will ask for unacceptable homework to be repeated to

the required standard. It is the responsibility of the teacher to mark and return homework to

students within a few days of it being produced. Homework, as with other forms of formative

assessment, is returned with constructive comments and guidance as necessary. Teachers and

form tutors also regularly examine Student Diaries for homework entries. Homework that is late

or poorly completed will be reported to parents via a note in the Student Diary and should be

acknowledged by the parent, guardian or Head of Boarding.

Secondary Homework and Revision Schedule

Key Stage 3 (KS3) Programme

Year 7: 3 subjects: total time 1 hour per night

Year 8: 3 subjects: total time 1 hour 15 minutes per night

Year 9: 3 subjects: total time 1 hour 30 minutes per night

IGCSE Programme

Year 10 & 11 3 subjects: total time 2 hours per night

IB Diploma Programme

Year 12 & 13 Minimum 20 hours per week – equating to 3 hours per night and

minimum 5

hours each of homework and revision over the weekend

In relation to the above times, homework set at KS3 level will generally consist of defined tasks,

whereas students moving toward their IGCSE and IB Diploma years will have an increasing

proportion of their ‘homework’ time inclusive of revision. At key times throughout the year,

preceding exams and formal coursework/internal assessment preparation, for example, IGCSE

and IB Diploma students will see an increased demand. For IB Diploma students, there are

Page 7: Uplands School Weekly Newsletter - Term 1 Issue 3 - 4 September 2015

7

additional peak periods with the timing of TOK essays and presentations, Extended Essays, Oral

Examinations in Languages, etc. Students are taught, as part of our Pastoral and Student Support

Programmes, to minimise the impact of this loading by managing their time accordingly in the

lead up to these more involved tasks. Setting interim goals is one key element to success.

The timeline above also allows, as a general principle, for teachers to set more substantial

homework tasks to be completed over several days or weeks, with day-to-day homework also

provided at least two days for completion. Naturally, the schedule above reflects the necessity

for the time devoted to homework to be increased as the student progresses through school.

Finally, but of equal importance, homework should not prevent students from participating in

co-curricular or extra-curricular activities. The key for every student is to find the balance that

works for them. We actively promote and encourage all students to be engaged in a well-

balanced and healthy approach to their studies. As academic demands become more intense

toward Year 13, it is increasingly important for students to maintain this balance – keeping a

healthy physical, emotional and spiritual state feeds a healthy mind. Without this, the central

purpose of “Home Work”, to encourage students to develop the confidence and self-discipline

to work on their own, cannot be realised. We look forard to providing genuine opportunities for

students to consolidate and reinforce their skills and understandings through our homework

programme.

Should you have any questions, suggestions or concerns about our homework guidelines, the

practices being carried out in this area or about your son/daughter’s welfare with respect to

assigned homework, please do not hesitate to get in touch with their subject teacher in the first

instance. The respective Heads of Year and Heads of Faculty are also available to speak with

you. As Head of Curriculum and Assessment, I would also be pleased to discuss aspects of our

Homework Policy. Equally, Mr Bill Mitchell, Head of Pastoral, would always like to hear from

you if you feel that your son or daughter needs some additional guidance or support with any

homework related matters.

Secondary School Production

By now your son or daughter has come home to

tell you about our wonderful production that is

happening in December 2 – 4.

Auditions have been held during this week and

we have been overwhelmed with the amount of

talent in the school. The CCA is being run on

Tuesday lunch times and Wednesday after school

and some Saturday rehearsals will be needed as

well.

If you haven’t got yourself involved and would still like to be, then please come and

speak to Ms. Hurst, Ms. Sharpe, Ms. Owens, or Ms. Jacob who are working with the

students on this production.

The Production Team!

Music Department News

Welcome to another school year, and to lots of exciting events coming up this

year. The first event on our calendar for this term is a combined collaboration

with the Drama Department, with Mulan happening in December. On the 16th

December we are holding a Christmas concert combined with the primary

school, where we will have a number of items and Christmas festivity. We have

also been asked to perform at the Park Royal for the lighting of the Christmas

tree, as well as some carol singing, on 3rd December from 5pm – 6pm.

CCA’s are back on and for those of you who were a little confused about Band on Wednesday,

it is actually the Orchestra, but only brass, woodwind and percussion at this stage. From next

week, we are planning to move it to Wednesday lunch times, as the production rehearsals are

in the afternoon so it allows students to be involved with both. The String Ensemble and Choir

are both on Thursday after school. If you haven’t signed up for any of these please still come

along, the more the merrier!!

Some other events planned for the year is a Talent Show during Arts week in term two and a

Battle of the Bands in the third term. We are hoping also to have some lunchtime concerts

along the way, and there will be the senior year’s concerts to show off their talent with IGCSE

and IB classes. I would ask any student who feels they would like to be involved in any of

these events to come and see myself – Ms Owens or Ms Jacob. You don’t need to be taking

music to be involved but your talent is wanted!!

History Year 10 students renegotiate the Treaty of Versailles

History IGCSE Year 10 Students apply their background knowledge and the profiles of the Big

Three (France, UK and USA) in revisiting the key features of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles.

Empathy, content knowledge and group dynamics in collaborating on a charged subject matter

were all evident in this fun activity.

The lesson learned by all is that a good peace must be a fair peace that attempts to address the

needs of all states involved. This lesson is easily transferred to our students' every day lives as

well!

After watching Sophie (as France) try to grind Charles (1919 Germany) into the dust of oblivion,

the whole class will make sure to keep on her good side!

“Please HELP”: From the Economics Department

One of the core components of the IB Diploma Programme is the Extended Essay (affectionately

known as the “EE”). Each year our Year 12 IBDP students are required to select a topic of interest

in the December of their first year and then develop a 4000 word research document over the

course of the next 12 months. Each student chooses a subject focus e.g. Economics, and then asks

one of the teachers in that subject-specialty to be their supervisor. The EE is by far the most

comprehensive research paper that the students will have undertaken in their secondary school

studies and introduces many of the students to the field of primary research for the first time.

One of our keen Economists, and the recipient of last year’s “Economist of the Year Award”, Ms.

Juniel Tan, is one of five students that have chosen to focus their EE in Economics this year. Juniel

has chosen an extremely interesting and challenging research question that seeks to determine

the extent to which school fees at Uplands display characteristics of inelastic demand:

investigating key areas of price elasticity, income elasticity and cross elasticity. In order to

effectively meet the rigorous criterion of the IBDP, Juniel must complete hands-on primary

research and data collection that will enable her to answer her research question.

This is where we need the help of the Uplands Community…

In order to aid her research, Juniel has developed a questionnaire that seeks specific responses

from parents. The questionnaire is designed in such a way that the anonymity of the respondent

is ensured and only questions relevant to the research are asked. The survey will be sent out via

Survey Monkey over the next week and should take no more than 5-10 minutes to answer. Please

note that Juniel will need at least 50 responses from the community in order to gather sufficient

data and conduct meaningful analysis.

As Juniel’s supervisor, I can assure all members of the Uplands community that the information

gathered will be dealt with in the strictest of confidence. If you have any concerns, please email

me at: [email protected].

Thank you all in advance for your understanding and kind assistance in this matter.

Thanks also to Mr. Bristow for his unyielding support of the EE process!!

Head of Economics

Follow up to Year 12 Information Evening:

Thank you to all of the parents, guardians and students who attended this week’s year 12

information evening. As promised I would like to follow up at this juncture with a few points

and issues which arose out of the positive, enthusiastic and interesting discussions on

Wednesday evening.

Firstly, regarding information on our accommodation; Sunday-Tuesday will be spent at Echo

Homestay, Harau. The best source of information regarding the homestay is via TripAdvisor.

Here students will be sharing rooms of between 6-8 students per room, not 75 per room! All

meals will be provided throughout, as will safe clean drinking water. Wednesday and Thursday

we will be staying at Nuansa Maninjau Resort; website, www.nuansamaninjau.com. This is a

three star resort, again all meals will be provided. Here students will be sharing rooms in groups

of two or three per room.

Loola’s main representative on our trip, Conty, will meets us at Padang Airport and stay with us

throughout the trip. As well as the members of Uplands staff accompanying the students, there

will also be Loola Company representatives with a ratio of at least 1:10 in terms of staff to

students, at all times.

The company have advised students to pack lightly, with their guidelines advising students to

aim for 10kg in terms of luggage. Yes, students will be responsible for carrying their own

luggage. There will be clean, safe drinking water available at all times.

Further information pertaining to the week will be disseminated in due course. Thank you to all

of you for your input into making this a positive and valuable experience for all involved.

Have a pleasant weekend.

Please ensure that the form is completed in as much detail as possible. Should your child require

medication whilst we are away, please can you hand this to me on the day of departure. It should

be in a clearly labelled bag and include the dosage instructions. Students should not be taking

medication on the trip without staff permission.

I have sent home today with students, two disclaimer forms that need to be filled in and returned

by Monday 7th September in order that they will be able to participate in all the activities on the

trip.

I will write to you again the week before the trip departs giving you more detailed information

regarding our travel arrangements and itinerary. However, in the meantime, should you have

Year 8 and 9 Experiential Learning Trips

After a busy week exploring our venues and activities, I can, as both the trip coordinator and

Head of Year, say to you as parents and students just what a great time is going to be had during

our visits to both the Taman Negara and the Perhentian Islands.

Your child should have come home this weekend with a full itinerary and some more

documentation for you to read carefully and sign. Please also ensure you have completed our

online medical forms, the links to which are also in the letters which have been sent home.

I am aware that one of the most important things you need is to feel confident in my and my

tutors abilities to look after your children and ensure their health, safety and happiness. Ecoteer

(http://ecoteerresponsibletravel.com/) are a company with many years experience of dealing with

students of all ages and their safety record and staffing levels are high. Please read below for the

biggest concerns you as parents have expressed so far.

KEY CONCERNS FOR YR 8 TRIP

Malaria/Dengue – Please give children mosquito spray (preferably not tablets as their side effects

can include dehydration and sensitivity to sun and therefore sun stroke). Include long sleeve

shirts and long trousers for day and night activities.

Weather – rain, flooding – Obviously if the weather is wet on arrival and continues to rain for up

to 24 hrs. then we can relocate to dormitories for the children or at worse cancel the trip and drive

(carefully of course) home. We will be watching weather forecasts carefully. We have alternate

locations and activities planned so we do not have to stop a days outing due to rain.

Facilities – Covered hall and dining area as well as cold water showers and toilets are part of the

campsite.

Emergency Medical Situation – St John’s ambulance on call 24 hrs. a day during the trip and will

go to each activity location. If a child is seriously injured the trip leader will contact parents and

only allow medical treatment in the nearby clinic with their permission. Evacuation back to

Penang would be arranged if necessary.

KEY CONCERNS FOR YR 9 TRIP

Page 15: Uplands School Weekly Newsletter - Term 1 Issue 3 - 4 September 2015

15

Weather – rain, flooding – Obviously if the weather is poor on arrival at the port we would not

take a boat across to the island. We will watch weather forecasts before the journey to and from

the island.

Boats – Students will wear a life jacket in the boat at all times, the boat men are known and used

regularly by Ecoteer and come from the village where the staff have contacts. The boats will cross

together in a convoy in case of difficulties and are in radio contact with staff in the Perhentians

and the mainland at all times.

If you as a parent see the itinerary your child brings home and have any major questions

remaining please don’t hesitate to contact me personally.

Creativity Activity Service – CAS at Uplands

Things are busying up in CAS now with the new Year 12s creating their Personal Profiles and

beginning to plan their CAS experiences and Projects. There is going to be some fantastic work

done this year, focusing particularly on the local community, and we’re all very excited about

getting started!

The student-led group, the Do Something Society (DSS), has its first meeting today after school.

The DSS, now in its 4th year, brings students from Years 7-12 together to ‘do something’ to help

those in need in Penang. By planning and running events, raising funds and awareness of

issues and working directly with those who need it, the DSS is an example of a CAS Project at

its best.

Organisations they have worked with in the past include the Befrienders, Eden Handicap

Service Centre and the Good Start Learning Centre. Watch this space for information on who

they will be supporting this year!

To keep up with all our CAS activity at Uplands, please Like our Uplands CAS Facebook page
