Getting off to School on the Right FootMornings can be a stressful time for families especially when

the term break is over and children need to get back to their usual school routine. One of the goals parents have for their children is to teach them to be independent and internally mo-tivated to get ready for school.

Have you ever heard yourself rushing and prodding your chil-dren along in the morning, saying, ‘You’re going to be late. You better hurry and brush your hair. Get your shoes on. Get in the car…?’ Maybe it is time to try a new system with your children, a new strategy.

In a family meeting you could say to your children: “You are all getting older, more mature and more responsible. Tomorrow begins a new system where you’re going to manage yourselves. I’ve been doing a lot of yelling and getting upset in the morn-ing and I don’t want to do that anymore. So I have a plan. I’m not going to wake you up in the morning. Here is a new alarm clock for each of you. You can decide what time you want to get up as long as you are well on time for school. I want you to learn to be independent so we’re going to have check points each morning. At 7:15am you need to be down for breakfast, all dressed with shoes on and your bed made. By 7:50am you need to have completed your chores and have combed your hair. By 8:10am you need to be seated in the car ready to go. Those are the checkpoints. This means you have to learn to look at the clock yourself and not wait for me to tell you what time it is. To help you be motivated to meet these check points, I have something positive and something negative. Let’s start with the positive. First, if you meet your two check points each morning for five mornings then I will allow you to watch a video on the weekend. However, if you miss one check point on a morning you will have to go to bed half an hour earlier that evening, since you must need more sleep in order to get up and get yourself ready.” Of course you can do different rewards in your family. Be creative.

End the meeting positively and talk about the benefits of in-dependence and being self-motivated. You need to teach your children how to set their alarms so they feel empowered and eager to manage themselves in the morning. When you start your new routine you should stay in bed and hear alarms go-ing off and feet shuffling. You will be tempted to get up and check on their progress but you need to trust them and stick to your plan. You will be surprised how (most) children want to be successful at demonstrating their independence to you in the morning by getting ready. The benefit is that you don’t have to nag or be harsh.

Strategy for the week: This week start a new routine and replace stress and nagging with firmness and a clear plan for developing independence in your children, all in a positive at-mosphere of cooperation.

School isn’t always like school

After the last bell at the end of term, the school day for the holiday period is transformed into an active fun filled program for families to enjoy. Children are able to relax, some with their siblings, in our Noah’s Ark “home away from home” environment. The recent spring vacation program was no exception with chil-dren benefiting from the generous program offered by Bunnings (Art and Craft fun), experiencing first hand our backyard insect world (Bug Kidz visiting show) and learning creative cooking skills with our own budding junior Masterchef Italian Day.

An EncouragementWe just never know what life will

throw our way. No one is exempt from problems or challenges in life, not the rich, not the poor, not the young, not the old, not non Christian, not Christians. It’s how we re-spond to those challenges and what we determine to do with our lives that matters. Rick Warren makes some very good points.

You will enjoy the new insights that Rick Warren has, with his wife now having cancer and him having ‘wealth’ from the book sales. This is an absolutely incredible short inter-view with Rick Warren, ‘Purpose Driven Life’ author and pastor of Saddleback Church in California.

In the interview by Paul Bradshaw with Rick Warren, Rick said: People ask me, What is the purpose of life? And I respond: In a nutshell, life is preparation for eternity. We were not made to last forever, and God wants us to be with Him in Heaven. One day my heart is going to stop, and that will be the end of my body - but not the end of me. I may live 60 to 100 years on earth, but I am going to spend trillions of years in eterni-ty. This is the warm-up act - the dress rehearsal. God wants us to practice on earth what we will do forever in eternity. We were made by God and for God, and until you figure that out, life isn’t going to make sense.

Life is a series of problems. Either, you are in one now, you’re just coming out of one, or you’re getting ready to go into an-other one. The reason for this is that God is more interested in your character than your comfort; God is more interested in making your life holy than He is in making your life happy. We can be reasonably happy here on earth, but that’s not the goal of life. The goal is to grow in character, in Christ-likeness.

This past year has been the greatest year of my life but also the toughest, with my wife, Kay, getting cancer. I used to think that life was hills and valleys - you go through a dark time, then you go to the mountaintop, back and forth. I don’t believe that anymore. Rather than life being hills and valleys, I believe that it’s kind of like two rails on a rail-road track - at all times you have something good and some-thing bad in your life. No matter how good things are in your life, there is always something bad that needs to be worked on, and no matter how bad things are in your life, there is always something good you can thank God for. You can focus on your purposes, or you can focus on your problems: If you focus on your problems, you’re going into self-cen-teredness, which is my problem, my issues, my pain. But one of the easiest ways to get rid of pain is to get your focus off yourself and onto God and others.

We discovered quickly that in spite of the prayers of hundreds of thousands of people, God was not going to heal Kay or make it easy for her. It has been very diffi-

cult for her, and yet God has strengthened her charac-ter, given her a ministry of helping other people, given her a testimony, drawn her closer to Him and to people. You have to learn to deal with both the good and the bad of life. Actually, sometimes learning to deal with the good is harder. For instance, this past year, all of a sudden, when the book sold 15 million copies, it made me instantly very wealthy. It also brought a lot of notoriety that I had never had to deal with before. I don’t think God gives you money or notoriety for your own ego or for you to live a life of ease. So I began to ask God what He wanted me to do with this money, notoriety and influence. He gave me two differ-ent passages that helped me decide what to do, II Corinthi-ans 9 and Psalm 72.

First, in spite of all the money coming in, we would not change our lifestyle one bit. We made no major purchases.

Second, about midway through last year, I stopped taking a salary from the church.

Third, we set up foundations to fund an initiative we call The Peace Plan to plant churches, equip leaders, assist the poor, care for the sick, and educate the next generation.

Fourth, I added up all that the church had paid me in the 24 years since I started the church, and I gave it all back. It was liberating to be able to serve God for free.

We need to ask ourselves: Am I going to live for posses-sions? Popularity? Am I going to be driven by pressures? Guilt? Bitterness? Materialism? Or am I going to be driven by God’s purposes (for my life)?

When I get up in the morning, I sit on the side of my bed and say, God, if I don’t get anything else done today, I want to know You more and love You better. God didn’t put me on earth just to fulfill a to-do list. He’s more interested in what I am than what I do. That’s why we’re called human beings, not human doings.

Happy moments, PRAISE GOD. Difficult moments, SEEK GOD. Quiet moments, WORSHIP GOD. Painful moments, TRUST GOD. Every moment, THANK GOD.

He arrived this morning, we had prayer, spent some time just talking, and He held me for awhile because I was hav-ing a bad morning, then, He was on his way to your place.

Challenging and encouraging isn’t it? Happy parenting. And so it is. Maintain good relationships. Bring heaven to earth. Fear prevents, faith prevails. God bless. True mean-ing of Easter. Celebrate the risen Christ. Happy Mother’s Day to all our mums. Find the joy. Defend the Australian way of life. Encourage goal setting. Be thankful. Bloom where you are. Develop resilience. Too blessed to be stressed. Take time. Encourage a positive attitude. Never quit. Guidance. Help others. Enjoy time. Enjoy life. Happy holidays.

You have been adopted!Quote from Power New Testament

We in Christ have been chosen to be on God’s team. We wear his colours, his uniform. We carry all the responsibili-ties of playing for Christ, for we carry his “seal”. When we sin we let down his team. But the Holy Spirit will give us power. He is committed to building us into useful players for the Father. “God was kind and decided that Christ would choose us to be God’s own adopted children.”

Our annual celebration of creativity - is coming next week. This year our theme is ‘Discover the Treasure Within’.

At King’s we believe that within all our students are the seeds of different and wonderful gifts and talents.

This year in we wish to encourage our students to explore a variety of possibilities that will enable them to see that the sky’s the limit and that it is possible for them to discover their treasure within and to become all that they can be.

During this exciting week students will experience, explore and investigate a range of entertaining and educational activities. A selection of guests that will include well known artist Sergio Cariello (from U.S.A.) will help facilitate the students’ experiences. Sergio will be signing Action Bibles on Wednesday 12th October, 2-4pm in the upper primary area.

Competitions this year are: Creative Writing – This year our writing competition task will be a Poem. The poem must be based on the theme ' Discover the Treasure Within’, however, the students can still come up with their own creative title. The poem can be of any length and form. While this competition is not compulsory, it would be great to see as many students enter as possible. The students may be given some time to work on it during school time, however, it is expected that they will also need to work on it at home. The due date is Tuesday the 11th of October and there will be a prize (two tickets for the musical and a certificate) for the winner in both the Lower Primary and Upper Primary.

Photo - Using yourself or someone else in a photograph that demonstrates them or you using their/your gifting (photo needs to be taken by the student). Each entrant will have to take and then print their photo and attach their name and class to the back of the photo. All entries will be displayed (hopefully on the library window). There will be a winner from P to 2, Years 3 and 4, and Years 5 to 7.

All entries should be submitted by Wednesday 12th October.

I Wonder Wall - What questions do you have, what things do you wonder about that are connected to discovering your treasure. There will be a prize for the best question and the best answer.

“For where your treasure is there your heart will be also” Matt 6:21
