Prep Primary

Young Chess PlayersThis term our Prep classes will have the opportunity of

learning the basic fundamentals in a game of chess. Why teach Prep chess? Young children understand the di!erent moves that di!erent pieces make on the board and they know of the importance of protecting their king.

On Friday 12 October, our Chess Coordinator Raelene Bar-ton, along with the Primary Chess Captain Sam Shaw, encour-aged our students as to the bene"ts of learning chess. Sam along with our own Prep student, Xavier O’Brien, demon-strated to each class a chess game.

Xavier was only three years old when his grandmother saw him playing chess on the computer, not long after Xavier asked for a real chess set. Xavier said he likes playing chess because it’s fun and he likes all the di!erent moves and tak-ing pieces to get points.

Parenting with Power

Scripture of the week: For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be.

Matthew 6:21What Your Child Treasures

What is your child interested in? What does he think about? Where does she spend her money? What do your children like to do? Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”.

Most of the time the activities our children choose indicate what they treasure. Because the heart and behaviour are closely linked, parents can look for things their children can do that will encourage healthy heart attitude change. As a parent you should look for ways to guide your children into constructive and helpful activities, hobbies and relationships.

Sometimes you’ll have to limit certain activities, but look for positive ones to replace those you’re taking away. Try to attract your children to good choices by providing opportunities they’d enjoy. By adjusting what your children do, you can in#uence what they enjoy and eventually what they treasure.

Sometimes simply providing di!erent choices guides a child into more healthy heart situations, but other children seem to have a bent towards treasuring the wrong things. They may want to spend hours in activities that aren’t necessarily bad, but you know they don’t contribute to maturity and growth.

You may have to use a combination of approaches, including setting some "rm limits to guide your child in the right direction. That’s part of the hard work of parenting, but it’s not optional. Be creative and look for alternatives, but recognise that, if a child isn’t responding, you may have to provide parental control. Don’t be afraid to take a stand to redirect your child into more healthy choices. After all, too much of a particular thing can have an un-helpful a!ect on the heart.

Strategy for the week: Determine where your child’s heart lies by what is treasured. From that information, direct them towards activities and choices that are more bene!cial towards growing to be God’s child.

SecondaryParenting As The Lord Parents Us

As parents, we received no manual as each of our children was born. Sometimes we parent as we were parented, sometimes we choose to parent exactly the opposite to how we were parented, sometimes we attend parenting courses, sometimes we read books on parenting, sometimes we speak to our friends or other family members and seek advice. However, the Lord through the Bible gives us help on some basic parenting principles. One principle is shown in the story below - it reminds me of how God responds to us, His children, even though we disappoint Him often; and thus we learn how to parent our own children in instances such as this. It does not mean that we escape the consequences of some of our choices, but it does remind us of God’s love for us all.No Strings Attached

How important is it to o!er our love, especially to those closest to us, with no strings attached? Ernest Hemingway wrote a poignant short story called ‘The Capital of the World.’ In it he tells about a Spanish father who wants to reconcile with his son who has run away to Madrid. In order to locate the boy he takes out this ad in the El Liberal newspaper: “Paco, meet me at the Hotel Montana at noon on Tuesday. All is forgiven. Love, Papa.”

Paco is a common name in Spain, and when the father goes to the square he "nds 800 young men named Paco waiting for their fathers.

What drew them to the hotel? As Hemingway tells it, it was the words ‘All is forgiven.’ I notice that the father did not say, “all WILL BE forgiven IF you do this or that.” Not, “all WILL BE forgiven WHEN you do such and such.” He simply says, “All is forgiven.” No strings attached.

And that’s the hard part - un-attaching the strings. Wiktionary tells us that the origin of the expression ‘no strings attached’ may go back to ancient times when documents were written on parchment that were rolled up and secured with a string. The Babylonian Talmud in Tractate Bava Metzi’a tells of a man who gives his wife a bill of divorce on such a parchment, but holds onto the string so that he can snatch it back, should he choose to do so. The divorce, therefore, is not considered valid since he will not give it freely. Similarly, love, forgiveness or friendship that is given with strings and conditions attached are a sham and not valid, since they can be snatched back at any time.

An unknown author beautifully portrays the possibilities of no-strings-attached love in this heartfelt story titled “The Rock.”

“As she grew older her teenage daughter became increasingly rebellious. It culminated late one night when the police arrested her daughter for drunk driving. Mom had to go to the police station to pick her up.

They didn’t speak until the next afternoon. Mom broke the tension by giving her a small gift-wrapped box. Her daughter nonchalantly opened it and found a little rock

inside. She rolled her eyes and said, ‘Cute, Mom, what’s this for?’ ‘Read the card,’ Mom instructed. Her daughter took the card out of the envelope and read it.

Tears started to trickle down her cheeks. She got up and lovingly hugged her mom as the card fell to the #oor.

On the card were these words: ‘This rock is more than

Crazy Sock Day FundraiserOn Thursday 18 October the high school students participated

in the annual World Vision Fundraiser, this year termed ‘Crazy Sock Day’. The event was organised and managed by the Year 11 Event Management team as a means of promoting the cause of World Vision within the college.

This year World Vision is dedicating all of its "nancial resources to the support of children in Ethiopia who even today, in the 21st century, continue to su!er from starvation and malnutrition. As a "rst world nation, the Year 11 Event Management team felt that the prevention of poverty should be a cause supported by this next generation of young adults. As such, the event and all promotional materials disseminated were focussed on raising awareness of the circumstances of those in Ethiopia as a means of developing knowledge and compassion throughout the school.

On the day the student body was treated to a BBQ lunch, elastics competition and music, creating an enjoyable festival atmosphere in the college grounds. The event culminates the end of fund collection for the 40hr Famine held in early August.

Ultimately, the Year 11 Event Management team would like to extend a huge Thankyou to all students who participated in the ‘Crazy Sock’ festivities and to those who donated money to the cause.

200,000,000 years old. That is how long it will take before I give up on you.’”

This mother is not saying, ‘I will love you IF.’ Instead she says that she will love her daughter forever and nothing can change that. No strings attached.

When we learn to love like that, I think we’ll understand the words of Emmett Fox, who said, “If you could only love enough, you could be the most powerful person in the world.” $~ Steve Goodier

Happy parenting. I wish you Jesus. A choice to make. Remember God’s esteem. Ideal Valentine. I’ll keep you in my prayers. Why/How. The Greatest. The joy of motherhood. Give thanks. Pray. Thankful hearts are happy hearts. Trust the Lord. Know who you are in Christ. Nurture compassion. Have a chuckle. Attitudes are habits. Courage. Recognise your heroes. A disciplined tongue. No strings attached.

Outstanding Achievements

Alicia Green (Year 9)In the recent September school

holidays, Alicia trialled for the U14’s Qld Indoor Netball Team. Alicia was successful in being selected and will compete at the nationals in Brisbane Dec 2 – 8. This is Alicia’s third time in being selected to play for Qld Indoor Netball at Nationals. We are all very proud of her.

Dimitee Coventry (Year 8)Dimitee has made the QLD Triathlon

Talent Squad for the 13 – 15yrs. This is a massive honour as it is invitation only and not many get chosen to be in this elite squad. It requires a lot of commitment and hard work with camps and races in Sydney and Maroochydore. Congratulations Dimi.

Paige Owen (Year 9)This year Paige was selected to represent

Australia in the schoolgirls U14 girls’ futsal team to tour Barcelona in May. Unfortunately she was unable to be a part of the tour. She has also been selected to represent Qld U15 girls in the upcoming clubs’ nationals in Sydney in November for futsal. Paige currently plays futsal for the Qld Academy and trains at the QAS on a Saturday. In soccer Paige played this year for Gold Coast in the Junior Premier League for the U14 girls where they "nished equal "rst. Paige is de"nitely one of King’s soccer/futsal superstars.

Congratulations to our State Athletics Students!!!!!!This year’s Primary State Athletics Championships was held at Barlow Park in Cairns on Friday 19 – Saturday 20 October. We were

expecting hot weather, but when we arrived it was cold and raining. There where thousands of competitors representing di!erent regions from all around Queensland.

We had nine students represent King’s, which was the most we have ever had! Tanika Mahon (10), Raelene Stevens (12), Isaac Hawkins (11), Candice Richards (11), Jordan Sergis (10), Nathan Bow (10), William Moore (11), Jasmyne Coventry (10) and Leah Simpson (11) all did their best, as they battled it out against the best of the best from Queensland.

The majority of the students made it through to the "nals in their event, narrowly missing out on qualifying through for nationals. Tanika Mahon helped her team win a silver medal in the 4x100m relay and Leah Simpson had a nail biting "nish in the 800m, where photo "nish was required. Unfortunately, Leah placed 4th missing out on qualifying for nationals by 0.01 of a second. This is an outstanding achievement!

We were so proud to be able to represent King’s and thank everyone for praying for us! We would also like to thank our coaches for their time and encouragement, as we couldn’t have done this without them. We are all excited to get back into training to get ready for an exciting 2013 in athletics!

Maths NewsKing’s Students Place 4th on the Gold Coast

First in Queensland in Mathematics ChallengeThis year King’s Year 9 students registered for the

Commonwealth Bank Australian Maths Challenge. Our team comprises 11 students with class and homework support from another 19 students. Their hard work was rewarded.

Out of 4883 schools from across Australia and 449, 315 students King’s Christian College placed 18th in Australia out of all primary and secondary schools; 5th in Australia out of all secondary schools; and 1st in Queensland out of all secondary schools "ve students placed in the top 10 in the Queensland secondary division!

Each year the Queensland Association of Mathematics Teachers (QAMT) holds a Year 8 Maths Quiz. This year it was held during an evening in Term 3 at Varsity College. The quiz is a team event and comprises a number of di!erent sections – estimation, speed, written problems, individual short answer and general knowledge.

Some example questions are ‘What is the "rst palindromic number after 1100?’ and ‘A local fund raising e!ort using four teams each with "ve members makes a pro"t of $172. On average, how much money does each team member make?’

This year the King’s team placed 4th on the Gold Coast.Congratulations to our Year 8 team.

We Have Outstanding Maths Students At King’s Once again our students participated in the Australian

Mathematics Trust’s competition. This event was introduced in Australia in 1978 as the "rst competition in Australian schools. In this time it has served almost all Australian secondary schools, providing feedback and enrichment to schools and students. It has become the largest single event on the Australian Education calendar, allowing students to attempt the same tasks, on the same day in about 40 countries. It has become a truly international event, with countries throughout the Paci"c and South East Asia, and some from even further a"eld taking part.

Approximately 400,000 students have taken part in recent years.

We had 40 of our high school students volunteer to participate this year. Each grade exceeded the Queensland state mean by more than 10% and each grade had a number of students achieve high distinctions, distinctions and credits. These students were acknowledged at last week’s assembly, receiving certi"cates and prizes. Well done students.

In the primary school, over 200 students from Years 3 - 7 entered the competition and students who achieved outstanding results will be receiving ‘Colours’ for their accomplishment. There were 20 King’s students who achieved a distinction award and will be the recipients of a red Mathematics Colour. These students achieved in the top 15% or better of all of the students participating in this test across Australasia. Many teal and white Colours will also be presented to students in our ceremony to recognise other outstanding results. Well done primary students!

It is great to have so many keen mathematicians amongst our school students.

Primary Girl’s Division Last Friday we had two primary girls chess teams participate in the primary girl’s division at Loreto College in Brisbane. We all had a wonderful day, it was a very hard competition and they all gave it their best and placed 7th and 9th overall. The girls really enjoyed this event as they played chess against girls only.

Thank you Mrs Gittins for an enjoyable day and assisting our chess teams to Brisbane.

~ Keep on chessing! Raelene Barton - Chess Coordinator

Flow In His RiverQuote from ‘Walk in Faith’ by Ray McCauley

But its swamps and marshes will not be healed; they will be given over to salt. Ezekiel 47:11

As "shers of men we must #ow in His river, bringing life and healing to all we come into contact with, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

A great man of God once remarked to me, “What we started as a river of living water "nished as a swamp.” Many times when God begins to add a blessing, this can be likened to a tributary or a small river entering the main #ow but, because of prejudice or an unwillingness to adapt, the two streams will not #ow together and the part that was a river is now cut o!, leaving a swamp of mud in which life cannot exist. The Dead Sea is so named because everything #ows in and nothing #ows out. Don’t let this happen in your life.

A natural river becomes a mighty river when many small rivers or tributaries enter on its path to its "nal destination. In order for a river to become a great river then much must be added. Generally, the reason for Christians only being in ankle deep water is that they refuse to enter the main stream or to allow the addition of new tributaries. At the point of entry there is always much turbulence. This is exactly what happens in church history and what happens in our own lives when God adds something!

Be a channel, not a swamp!
