This week saw the year 11 students participate in their GCSE PE practical examination. I am pleased to inform you that our visiting moderator, Mrs Jan Jones was very complimentary towards the students and their performances. The students should be proud of their achievements and continue to work hard to ensure they achieve equal success in their theory paper. The year 10 GCSE PE class and a few selected students from year 9 helped out and were a credit to Uplands. The Art examination is just a couple of weeks away and I wish all the students participating in the exam the best of luck in the build up to this. I spoke with the year 11 students about the possibility of having an End of year dinner and the response was very positive. This will not be a formal affair but one that will recognise their hard work and effort over the last two years. I will be asking students to confirm their attendance over the next couple of weeks, once the venue and costs have been confirmed. Year 10 work experience is shaping up well. I have now secured sufficient placements for all students who requested help from me and I will be advertising these next week. All students are expected to apply for the positions they wish to work in and should therefore submit a CV and a letter of application to me. They have been working on both of these important documents over the last few weeks, under Miss Bells guidance. Very much like in the real world of work, students will then be interviewed for their positions. Students will receive final confirmation of their placements after the Easter holidays and will then be asked to contact the company they are working with to introduce themselves.

The Art Department and Year 9 Welfare Team would like to express pride in all Uplanders who

contributed to the Art Departments, Street Theatre Project. Throughout past months, Year 9

students have worked in Art classes on character expression in puppetry developing skills in

carving polystyrene, researching and designing Celtic patterns. Whilst developing team-work

ability, they made 12 foot tall puppets using a variety of materials including polystyrene, wood,

papier-mch and cloth. Their work was showcased in the Irish Parade last Saturday, at Straits

Quay. During the parade, the giant puppets came to life to tell the legendry story which had

inspired their creation. The story was that of the Irish giant Fionn Mac Cool and the Giants

    Causeway.

Legend has it that the fabulously beautiful landscape, of the ancient Irish kingdom of Ulster, was

made by the hands of slightly crazy giants. Stories are told of one great Irish giant, Fionn Mac

Cool, whose most fearsome enemy was a Scottish giant Benandonner, The Red Man. Fionn was

so determined to get at Benandonner that he built a path of six sided stones to connect Ireland

and Scotland. One day, Fionn shouted a challenge to the Scottish giant Benandonner to cross the

path and fight him but as he saw the Scot getting closer and closer he realised Benandonner was

much, much bigger than he had imagined! Fionn ran back home and told his wife hed picked a

fight but had thought better of it! Fionns wife, Oonagh, thought quickly. She met Benandonner

at the door and said, Its a pity Fionns out hunting, would you like to come in and say hello to

the baby? Oonagh showed Benandonner the baby she and Fionn had. Sitting in a bath-cradle

was Fionn Mac Cool himself all dressed up to fool the Scottish giant! Benandonner took one look

at the baby and thought he would prefer not to meet its daddy. As he ran back to Scotland he

tore up the path Fionn had built to make sure Fionn wouldnt follow him. The paving stones flew

everywhere and can still be seen on the North coast of Ulster, in Ireland today at the Giants

Causeway and Fingals Cave in Scotland.

The following students deserve special mention for telling this story through the Street Theatre

Project and giving of their time on the actual parade day -

From Year 7 Jason, Cailin and Amreeta

From Year 9 Jenny, Damin, Jane, Jia Ying, Plearn, Karen, Xuaniss, Cassandra, Cian, Ciara, Elene,

Shylah, Amelie, Miles, Yuki, Rachel, Aishani, Nicole, Ilya, Chalyn, Andrea, Pavi.

In recognition of your effort, please see any member of the Year 9 Welfare Team (tutors or HOY),

    for merits. Well done!

On Tuesday 17th March, the Art department will be hosting the I.B Visual Arts Exhibition with

a total of 12 students exhibiting their work from the last 2 years. The works range from paintings

to large sculptures and are a culmination of many hours of work. The IB Diploma Programme

Visual Arts Course encourages students to challenge their own creative and cultural expectations

and boundaries. It is a thought-provoking course in which students develop analytical skills in

problem-solving and divergent thinking, while working towards technical proficiency and

confidence as art-makers. In addition to exploring and comparing visual arts from different

perspectives and in different contexts, students are expected to engage in, experiment with and

critically reflect upon a wide range of contemporary practices and media. The course is designed

for students who want to go on to study visual arts in higher education as well as for those who

are seeking lifelong enrichment through visual arts. Please come to support the students from

6pm until 8:30pm, refreshments will be served.

    New Multi-Purpose Hall

I would like to extend an invitation to all interested parents and students to attend our Uplands

IGCSE Information Evening. While this information session and meet-the-teachers event is

particularly relevant to current Year 9 students who are entering our IGCSE Programme next

year, all those interested in learning more about our IGCSE offerings and pathways through to

the IB Diploma Programme are welcome. Following a brief introduction to the IGCSE

Programme by Mr Rose, the Head of Curriculum and Assessment, parents and students will have

the opportunity to speak with Heads of Faculty and Heads of Department about specific courses

this is an invaluable part of the evening. Information boards will be presented for all subjects,

    PSAC Basketball Tournaments

Last weekend saw Uplands field teams in all 4 PSAC Basketball Tournaments; O15 Boys &

Girls and U13 Boys & Girls. With 40 of our students involved this was a fantastic chance for our

teams show how much progress has been made on the Basketball Court. Some great

performances saw Uplands return as Champions in both O15 Girls and U13 Girls tournaments!

Thank you Coaches for your time and congratulations to all involved.

    O15 Girls PSAC Captains Review

Last weekend Uplands was the host of the Over 15 Girls Basketball tournament with Dalat and

POWIIS. Our team was relatively young with ages ranging from 13 to 18.

Our first game was against Dalat - a team which we knew would be challenging to beat. We

played our usual game, pressing high up court and defending with a solid 3-2 defence. Dalat

did not prove their reputation wrong: after the second quarter we were 6 points down. We

however kept our heads up and were eager to score more baskets. This hunger was soon

translated: within 5 minutes, we were level with them. The rest of the game was very equal and

the end score read 17-17. A winner of the game was needed as this was not only seen as a game

of the tournament but also as that of the PSAC league so the game was extended for another 3

minutes. We got the upper hand, scoring one basket and defending strongly - the final score

    was 17-19 to us.

Next, we faced POWIIS, whose style of playing we had gotten to know well during the sports

weekend also hosted by Uplands one month ago. We again worked well together, ensuring

accurate passes and shots, and got rewarded for our efforts, beating POWIIS by a much greater

    margin than Dalat.

Overall, I am very proud of everybody that played on Saturday. Thank you to Mr Mitchell,

who was a great coach. Despite the little training sessions we had, we showed great

sportsmanship, dedication and skill. Well Done Everybody!

The U13 boys and girls were in action last weekend in their end of season basketball tournaments. The boys have had a tough season with just one win against POWIIS, in their first game. They have however, never given up and showed great determination and commitment as they battled out two fiercely contested games against Tenby and Dalat. The boys came up just short against Dalat but were outclassed against Tenby, who went on to win their tournament. The girls have, by contrast, been very successful this year on the court. Having won all their games in the league, they had already secured the league trophy and were looking to win the double and emulate the success of last years team. They started as tournament favourites and didnt disappoint, beating both Dalat and POWIIS in their two games. Both teams are now in the final stages of their preparations for the FOBISIA trip which departs on Thursday March 26th.
