Dear Delegate,

On behalf of the UPMG, and the executive, I am delighted to welcome you to the 2012 UPMG Conference ‘Going for Gold’, in the wonderful Vale Resort in beautiful South Wales. Our theme celebrates the Olympics year and our topics focus on our future success.

It is especially a pleasure this year as I welcome you to my home country, Wales; we have plenty of activities for you to enjoy, starting with a traditional Welsh Male Voice Choir on Sunday evening in the conservatory.

A very warm welcome to our first time delegates, I look forward to meeting you at the newcomer’s reception, where you have the opportunity to meet the executive and other new delegates. I hope you will enjoy attending our conference, please be sure to ask if you are unsure about anything. Welcome back to our regular delegates, and I hope that you will enjoy our conference.

Our Keynote Speaker this year is Jamie Baulch, Olympic medallist and former world champion, Jamie is also joining us on Sunday evening. Jamie will start our conference with an energetic presentation to motivate and encourage us to aim and achieve Gold. We also have presentations including topical members’ sessions and also guest speakers; Ann Holman, Jo, Lloyd and Ted Osuch all presenting double sessions during the conference.

As always I am delighted to meet our colleagues from ACUP and NIPPA, this year we warmly welcome Lisa Hoover from Bucknell University, and Jimmy Friend from the University of North Texas on behalf of ACUP; and Rob Roberts from Massey University in New Zealand on behalf of NIPPA; as an organisation we have found these shared links to be of great benefit to our members. Please do take the time to introduce yourselves and to meet Lisa, Jimmy and Rob during the course of the conference.

I would like to thank our sponsors and exhibitors for their continued support, I hope you have an enjoyable conference, please refer to your programme, following feedback; you are now able to join in many more of the sessions and activities with delegates. There are plenty of networking opportunities for the delegates and suppliers to discuss and meet. Please take time to visit the exhibition during the breaks. And ensure that you collect your supplier stickers for entry into our prize draw on Wednesday.

This year the conference programme is accompanied by a busy social calendar. Don’t miss the Welsh choir on Sunday evening, our fun 1970’s fancy dress night on Monday evening; I am looking forward to seeing the wonderful costumes on display. On Tuesday our networking afternoon is a visit to Cardiff Bay, where you have free time to explore this wonderful waterfront development; visit the Senydd (Welsh Assembly) where it is free to sit in the public gallery and watch the debate; explore the Millennium Centre; Pierhead building; Norwegian Church and the many shops and bars; or enjoy a boat ride around the bay. The Awards Dinner is on Tuesday evening and we will celebrate the wonderful range of work produced in the last year. Good luck to everyone who entered.

I hope that you enjoy the programme over the next few days; I look forward to meeting and speaking to you all during the conference. Please enjoy the warm Welsh hospitality and hopefully some sunshine here in South Wales

Rob Roberts, Massey University, New Zealand Rob began his career in the printing industry in the mid 1960’s when he commenced an apprenticeship as a letterpress machinist, he emigrated to New Zealand early in 1970 and after spending some time working for commercial printers accepted the position of Production Supervisor in Massey University’s Printery. In 1989 Rob became the manager of the Printery and in his presentation he will give you an overview of his experience in the in-house sector of New Zealand’s printing industry, and how the Printery was developed into the successful business it is today. Rob has experienced numerous and significant technological advances during his career and whilst he feels sad at witnessing the loss of many of the traditional printing skills, his presentation will show you that he understands how important it is that he and his team must fully embrace the electronic environment we now find ourselves operating in, he will be being giving you his view of what the ‘Tomorrow Printery’ will look like.

Tuesday 29 May Vale Bar & Grill 0700-0900 Breakfast Castle Suite 1&2 0915-1000 Session 8: ‘Email vs. Print Communication’ - Perception and Reality

Lisa Hoover Director of Publications, Print & Mail Bucknell UniversityHow many of you have heard this statement from one of your clients in the past year: “We’re not going to print that project this year; we’re going to send an email instead?”

As print providers, we all know that some of our business has been lost due to electronic communication. There are many perceptions about both print and email.

However, perceptions are not always reality. Nothing changes perception more quickly than information. I will discuss how a partnership with other departments on campus

could be the key to researching and revealing facts on the effectiveness of email vs. print communication.

This session will also give a general overview of Lisa’s department and the role we played in the overall Communications Division. The structure is a bit different than

most in-plant organizations in the United States, but there seems to be a developing trend to combine printing organizations with Marketing/Communications. Lisa has

been functioning in that capacity since 2005, so she may have some insight for those who are currently migrating to that structure.
