This, it states in a press release, will be the prelude to intensifying action to achieve de- sired developments. Uteca indicates that the in- tensification of protest action has been necessi- tated by the repeated failure of the Umdoni Municipality to take the necessary action to rec- tify a growing list of issues within its scope. In particular, Uteca is demanding the priori- tisation of the removal of Xolani Saeed Luthuli from the position of municipal manager of Um- doni Municipality with immediate effect. The release lists a number of allegations and a chain of events, stating: “It is on these grounds that we are inviting all members of the public and other stakeholders to be part of a march to remove Mr Xolani Saeed Luthuli from the posi- tion of municipal manager of the Umdoni Mu- nicipality. This call to remove him is informed by the following facts — high level of incompe- tence and maladministration, lack of leader- ship and accountability, corruption and mal- practice.” The press release concludes: “The decision to have Mr Xolani Saeed Luthuli as a municipal manager of Umdoni Municipality was merely a political one with no other consideration, hence the above mentioned problems. That is why this march and other campaigning activities will be made to lobby the African National Con- gress to take a political decision of removing Mr Xolani Luthuli from Umdoni Municipality.” Valentine lunch at Crocworld This Valentine’s Day show your loved ones how much they mean to you by treating them to a day at Crocworld Conservation Centre where you are invited to celebrate this special day with a picnic on the lawns. R102 gets ‘facelift’

SETON THOMPSON>>[email protected]

AS the lifeline between many coastal towns, theR102 is important to most South Coasters. Add tothat that its godfather, the Provincial Departmentof Transport, is sealed in Pietermaritzburg, and thatit only responds occasionally, means that when itdoes, it is a pleasant surprise.

Such an occasion occurred last week with two ofthe most strategically placed potholes — outsidePenn Valley and at the R102-R612 crossroads at ParkRynie — were being fixed.

SOMETIMEbetweenThursday28OctoberandSunday 31 October 2010, 86-year-old Ramsa-cal Bagrathicwas suffocated in the bedroomofhis ParkRynie home, probably by a pillowoverhis face.

It has taken more than three years to bringone of his killers to book, and that was finallydoneatScottburghCourtonThursday,6Febru-ary, whenMagistrate S.S. Maboee, sitting withassessor Mngoma, convicted and sentenced40-year-old Tanzanian Ismael Juna to life formurder, plus 15 years’ for aggravated robbery.

The verdict was a triumph for DetectiveWarrant Officer Yurgen Moodley of the Scott-burghSAPSandhis teamaswell as stateprose-

kept. In his preliminary statement, he had de-nied going into the house at all. The state re-sponded that the curtainswere not kept in thatcupboard, but in another room.

The state also countered that the fingerprintwas“fresh”,almostcertainlyputtherebetween28 and 30 October 2010. Juna raised furtherdoubts about his claim not to speak or under-stand anything beyondpidginEnglish by relat-ing conversations with people with no know-ledge of his native Swahili.

The outcome of the case rested largely uponwhichofall theseconflictingassertionswas themostbelievable“beyondall reasonabledoubt”.

Themagistrate indicated that he found thatto be the state’s version and convicted Juna onboth counts.

THE bail application hearing for Ntuthuko WalterMnguni (32) and Zimisele Msani (21) in the caseagainst them for the alleged murder of ThobaniPhilani Shezi (21) of Malangeni has been set forFriday, 14 February.

The case follows the stabbing of RosevilleSecondary School Grade 12 pupil Thobani on 22January in which he was robbed of his cellphone.

Both accused are from Highflats and were arrest-ed in Durban to where they fled when the High-flats community made it clear they were not wel-come in their area.

The case is being investigated by DetectiveWarrant Officer Steyn Moonsamy of UmzintoSAPS Detective Service.

The outcome swung in the balance, de-pendent upon the reliability of the witnessesand the accused finally proved to be the lessreliable.

The keydeterminantwas fingerprint iden-tification. The accused’s print was on a cup-board door near Bagrathic’s body. He tried toexplain that away by saying he had gone intothe house somemonths before themurder, atBagrathic’s invitation, to discuss supplyingcurtaining. FEVER DIARY

Dear Fever,THE report under the above heading in

your 7 February issue refers. While I takeCouncillor Ntokozo Maphumulo’s com-ments about the rights of the local popula-tion with respect, I submit that he is miss-ing an important practical point. The tour-ists are not complaining about the localpeople being on the beachfront — they arecomplaining about the issue of unaccepta-ble behaviour by people on the beachfront.

If even a few people, locals or whoever, behave badly by getting drunk or druggedup, tourists will simply go to where that be-haviour does not happen. They are freeagents and can go where they like.

I understand that tourism is one of thetop two sources of local revenue, but I canpromise you that it will drain away if badbehaviour continues. So councillor, youhave to decide — do you want the touristsand the money they bring or do you wantthebadbehaviourwhichcostsyoumoney?

Make your decision and let everybodyknow where they stand. If you want thetourists and their money, you will need tokeep the bad “behavers” away, in whichcase, you will need police involvement be-cause drinkers and druggers normally be-have unacceptably, unless stopped.

Dear Fever,WE would like to issue a warning

through the medium of your newspaper toanyone purchasing a KP Scarborough fish-ing reel at a “too good to be true price”.

Most ski-boat and surf anglers in Kwa-Zulu-Natal are familiar with KP Scarbor-ough reels which have been manufacturedsince 1958 by a family-owned business.

After a recent tip-off we have reason tobelieve that reels being sold at ridiculouslylow prices could be stolen goods.

All our reels are sold to reputablewholesalers and retailers. Should you haveany information in this regard, please con-tact the Umkomaas SAPS on039 978 1900.

Angler, Umkomaas

Warning tofishing-reelbuyers

Dear Fever,IN South Africa there are more than 20 motor car

manufacturers producing well over 300 differentmodels — from little run-arounds to the big 4x4s forthe blokes who are not sure about their wedding tack-le.

Every manufacturer must have a dealer networkand must hold billions of rands worth of spares forevery particular model as well as specialised work-shop personnel and equipment to tend to their makeof car. Just imagine if there was only one manufactur-er with many of the parts suitable for many models— engines, oil pumps, transmission components, wir-ing sets, brake items as well as many body compo-nents.

I bring this up as I’ve just discovered how much arear light unit would cost for my modest little motor— it is astronomical.

Common component quantities would increasedramatically at the factory bringing the unit pricedown — it’s the numbers game.

This should have the effect of lowering your insur-ance premiums quite dramatically.

No jobs would be lost as the industry would stillturn out the same number of cars, but would comprisemany common parts.

The system has communistic overtones for sure— it may encourage Comrade Blade to give up his fan-cy 7 series BMW — and save the taxpayer some money, after all he’s always thinking of ways to aid the poor.

Stop sniggering there.Ian Birtt

Idea to savetaxpayer money

THE conviction and sentencing of a man forthe murder and robbery of 86-year-old Ram-sacalBagrathicathisParkRyniehomeissomecomfort to his family and the community. Itis also cause for congratulations to the policeand prosecution.

However, it also suggests the need for adeeper reflection within our coastal commu-nity. In many countries, the elderly and vulner-able tend to be attracted to coastal villagesto live their twilight years, hopefully in peaceand calm and a warm climate and at relativelylow expense.

The Umdoni coast is no exception. This sit-uation is not unnoticed by the criminal ele-ment. Many elderly are independent, stickingto poorly protected homes and their con-cerned younger relatives have great difficultykeeping tabs on them.

They are often forgetful and sometimesvery gullible. All of this helps the criminals. Re-tirement homes and gated communities helpbut more are needed, especially at affordablelevels.

For the many on their own, the communityneeds to keep constant vigilance.

A STRONG group of South CoastCanoeClubpaddlerswill start the2014 Dusi canoe marathon fromCampsDrift,PietermaritzburgonThursday full of optimism due toanewandimprovedtrainingpro-gramme.

The group have, for the veryfirst year, introduced cross fittraining into their paddling re-gimeandareconfident itwillbearfruit over the course of the three-day race. This year is a K2 year,withWillieKunzandRoyDelhove(Dbatch),DylanBenseandDanielMuller-Nedebock (D batch), RudiBense and Shadrack Mkhize (Lbatch), Bruce Brauteseth andJosh Brauteseth (F batch) and Si-mon Heaver and Patrick McNeill(J batch) joining forces.

It’s a milestone year for clubchairmanKunzashe’sset tocom-pete in his 20th Dusi along withKingfisher Canoe Club stalwartDelhove, and the duo have theirsights set ongold. Speaking to theFever ahead of the race, Kunzsaid: “We are aiming for a win inour age category and a top 100 inK2,however,wehavestiffcompe-tition, particularly from the Capein Giel van Deventer and JT Bas-son, who if I am not mistaken, have both represented SA be-fore.”

Kunzbelievestheirexperienceas a team will outweigh the factthat they’ve been unable to traintogether consistently. “The factthat he is in Durban is not reallyaproblem.Wedidwell inour firstrace, the Ozzie Gladwin in earlyNovember, and won the grandmasters category. We then didverywell at the 50Miler andwonour age category.”

OfmoreconcernforKunzistheveterans’ niggling injuries goinginto the race. “I am confident ofmy paddling fitness but both Royand I have endured achilles/calfinjuries, so the running we willhave to manage on the day. Royrecently went for a cortisone in-

jection but he is confident that hewill perform.”

The exuberant pair of DylanBense and Muller-Nedebock areearmarked to spearhead theSouth Coast charge, but theyaren’t putting toomuch pressureon themselves. “In a way we’rescared to set goals because somuch can go wrong but we’reaiming for a top 100.We’ll just doourbestandwillbeecstatic to justfinish inagoodtimeandenjoytheadrenaline rush the whole waydown all the rapids,” said DylanBense.

He added their top 10 finish inthe Drak - in a near decade oldboat - served as a confidencebooster, and expects their brandnew boat to give them extra fire-power. “Daniel’s a very goodpad-dlerandrunnerandtoknoweachother’s limits has prepared usmentally to push harder in racesandgettheresultswewant.Myfa-ther sponsored us a new boatwhich we are grateful for; it’s alighter boat and we’re very com-fortable in it and are not lookingforward to getting it beaten byrocks.”

Dylan’s father Rudi and hispartnerMkhizehavethepotentialto secure a top placing. With 10and seven previous Dusis to theircredit, their experience - as wellas Rudi’s supreme fitness andMkhize’s brute strength - willserve them well.

“I thinkwewillhave lotsof fun.We chirp each other quite a lot soit’snotonlyabout theposition, it’salso about the fun.Wewould liketo earn a below 200 position orjust pip Dylan and Daniel, al-though that would mean theywould have had to have had acrash of sorts,” said Rudi.

Josh Brauteseth is making hisDusi debut and his partnershipwith cousin Bruce boasts a goodmixofyouthandexperience.Bothare good paddles and runners.Heaver and McNeill, in turn, arean experienced team and shoulddowell if theyaren’tboggeddownwith slow traffic.
