Welcome to The Urban Liaison Magazine’s first All Valley Magazine!

Four years ago, the Urban Liaison Magazine was a twelve page booklet that was all about downtown Nampa. Fast-forward four years, and we are now a 68-page magazine with coverage from Boise to Weiser, placed in over 700 locations between those two cities. The growth has come through lots of work, but our mission has never changed...To be a leader in the Support Local Movement and raise awareness to the importance of local living and spending our dollars at local businesses.

Please enjoy our Fall Issue. This issue features businesses from all over our beautiful valley, with a little Halloween fun thrown in, honoring one of my favorite holidays.

This issue’s cover features three of my favorite ladies. One of the best things about starting the magazine has been the people I have been able to get to know. I have lived in many States in my life, but none of them have had such wonderful people. The business community in our area is tight-knit and full of support. How else could I honor these ladies I admire but to put their pretty faces on the cover of my magazine, so that the entire valley can see and read about them.

Jackie Johnson, Liz Amason and Joan Endicott grace the cover. You can read a bit about them on the pages within.

We love to hear from our readers. You can email me at [email protected] and please like us on facebook. You can also find local events on our website at www.TheUrbanLiasion.com

The Best Trained Stylists

V3 Hair Studio is a Redken Broadway salon, meaning that they are one of the top Redken and Pureology salons in the Northwest. Redken sends V3 Hair Studio new product, hair color and technique workbooks before they are available to any other salon. This allows the stylists to be aggressive, fashion forward and prevents them from being stuck in a rut. At the Redken Sympo-sium, Brent Borrison stated perfectly that "getting comfortable with our successes is what keeps us from trying new things." V3 Hair Studio hosts platform artists and educators from New York City at least twice each year, attends the Redken Symposium every other year, and sends stylists to the Redken Exchange in New York City for training. With so much education, there is never an opportunity for the hair dressers to be bored or mediocre. When you enter the salon, you are greeted with cheerful, happy faces. There is never an unfriendly or intimidating air about the salon, rather one of encour-agement and excitement. Owners Danae and Victor Valle have set a prece-dence for community involvement, charity and optimism each and every day. The salon has recently hosted several teen image nights, dressed hair for several fashion shows and on September 27 they are hosting “Healthy You!”, a celebration of health in conjunction with Saint Alphonsus Hospital. The stylists share a compassion for service and bettering our own community, both in and out of the salon. Come experience the best service, education and culture at V3 Hair Studio. The staff is dedicated to excellence in their work, and giving the best to every client that sits in their chair. Frequent training and an abundance of color and cut information prove V3 to be one of the best salons in the Northwest, and clearly the best salon in Idaho.

RESHApES LIVES

URBAN HEALTH

BEFORE

AFtER

By Claudia Weathermon Tester

Is your weight keeping you from enjoying the life you deserve? I don’t mean this from a vanity standpoint. I’m asking from a health point of view. I just spent time with some fabulous women and we talked for many hours about our health. We’ve decided to take our health into our own hands and maintaining a healthy weight is instrumental to that goal. The government, the insur-ance companies and even the healthcare providers cannot do this for us.

In my time as a certified health coach with Take Shape for Life I have been on the front line of helping people improve their health. I have heard the heartache and discouragement from those who’ve suffered with high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, joint problems, sleep apnea and more. But I have also been blessed to hear how losing weight has improved their health. I coach a 19 year old who was on blood pressure medication. Yes, just 19 years old. He had accepted his lot saying “it’s hereditary.” Friends, you still can control or improve upon hereditary conditions. By losing weight using Take Shape for Life and with the guidance of his doctor he has been able to stop taking medication. I’ve also been cheering clients on who can stop using a sleep apnea machine because they’ve controlled their weight.

On a personal note, after my husband Dave lost 70 pounds he no longer suffered from plantar fasciitis, a painful foot ailment often found in overweight people. His knees, hips and feet are no longer under duress. We actually went jogging with our children the other day. Isn’t that what life is all about? Being able to get on the floor with your grandkids, tie your own shoe, not be winded or sore after a family hike?

So ask yourself again: is your weight keeping you from living the life you deserve? Losing weight is the first step of improving your health. And you don’t have to do it alone. Take Shape for Life is a proven, doctor recommended program with a health coach who will be helping you every step of the way.

Listen for Claudia Weathermon every Saturday at 12:00pm on Habits of Health Radio at 580 AM.

Karen replied, “I don’t like ham.”

Moe said, “You need to taste this ham.”

Honey Baked Ham is tender and juicy, with an unusually flavorful and crispy glazed crust.

“I was hooked,” recalls Karen. Moe discussed buying the store from the owner, who was hesitant to sell his business to someone so young. Moe felt it was a good company to get into, and persisted. Having learned the concept of hard work all his life, Moe wasn’t one to quit.

The rest is ham history, with the Starks hamming up the Boi-se area since 1991. They’ve seen lots of changes, one of them being Idaho’s growing conversion to ham-ness.

“Ham wasn’t a big thing here,” said Moe, “Pork is big in the Midwest and East, so we had to seriously promote to get it going.”

In 2002 Honey Baked Ham bought out their main competi-tor, Heavenly Ham, and in 2009 the majority of nationwide Heavenly Ham Stores converted to Honey Baked Ham and Café. It was a perfect merger, since the two companies’ products were so similar. Adding the Café part to the name helped people understand they’re far more than just a ham store.

Said Moe, “Not everyone knows what we do here. When we built our building in 1998 we had the ham thing going, then added a second business, Coffee Lovers and

More, with breakfast, coffee, wines, beer and a gift shop. First and third Wednesdays of each month are wine tastings. You never know who’s going to show up, the place is full of people enjoying beer and wine---Thanks, you guys! Say hi to the gang over there,” Moe called out to departing custom-ers, then said, “I like people. Life’s too short…have fun!”

Karen Stark, buyer for the tastefully unique gift shop, says it’s hard not to bring it all home. She works right alongside her husband to grow their business.

“There’s no slacking!” she says with a smile. Both Starks can do whatever is necessary to run the business, and so do their employees, from baking to meat and cheese cutting, to sandwich and coffee making, and even housekeeping.

“We sell a ton of hams during the holi-days,” Moe said, “Hams and turkeys make excellent, affordable gifts for any occasion.”

Honey Baked also offers what they call ‘the whole shebang,’ mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, pies. Mighty convenient for families that want to gather but don’t have time to cook a huge meal. Gift certificates, gift cards and customized gift baskets make it is easy when gift buying. Honey Baked does the work for you.

Their box lunches include a sandwich, chips, potato salad, coleslaw and cookies, all made fresh daily. The bread is home-made, and the meat’s gluten-free. Honey Baked makes several hundred fresh to order sandwiches per day, and delivers them, too. They call their box lunch a ‘hammy’ little carrying case.

Karen and Moe have the answer for anyone who stops by looking perplexed or unhappy.

“Feed them!”

The premium hams start with quality meat that’s smoked up to 20 hours and cured with a nearly 55-year-old traditional recipe.

Karen says, “We’ve had customers that have been with us for 21 years. They tell us this is the only ham they eat, and I say ‘Me, too!’”

EArL & EArL, PLLC is a small firm located in Nampa ser-vicing Idaho, Washington, and soon to be Colorado and Oregon clients. Ryan T. Earl and Collin J. Earl are the attorney members of the firm. We have an excellent support staff in Brian Hefner, as a paralegal, and Roseann Brown as our assistant. The name, Earl & Earl, is borrowed from my grandfather, Owen Ken Earl’s firm that he established in Moses Lake, Washington circa 1976. The PLLC stands for Professional Limited Liability Company. We are indeed professional and client focused.

More importantly than what we do is the “Why” we do this. At EArL & EArL, PLLC we focus on people. We want consumers to understand the process that they may find themselves in, a pro-cess that can be confusing and stressful. We want consumers to be able to make informed decisions in order to maneuver through the present preparing for a better future. We recognize, especially in today’s volatile economy, that most people work very hard for his or her money, but there always seems to be someone vying for that money.

Many of you reading this know an attorney, or at minimum recognize that there is a law office on every other corner, so why another one? We saw a lack of help, knowledge, and understanding in a particular area of law and wanted to provide that service to the residents of the State of Idaho. We practice in Consumer Protec-tion Law. Our services include collection defense (i.e. defending consumers against collection lawsuits); suing credit bureaus for mixed, merged files and other errors, omissions, and inaccura-cies on your credit reports; we also sue aggressive debt collectors who violate the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and/or other federal and local laws. Finally, in dire straits and after a thorough consultation we help people who need to file for either chapter 7 or 13bankruptcy. There are many other services we provide to consumers. Come on in and ask if you have a question, our initial consultation is free.

Why Earl & Earl, PLLC?Why another law firm?

Why would you need an attorney from Earl & Earl?

Why, Why, Why?

WHY? is probably the best place to start this introduction.

We try to provide as much information, support, and legal advice so our clients can keep his or her hard earned money.

We wish to have more than a simple attorney client relationship: we hope to be your legal partner for life.{ }

Approaching an anniversary of any tragedy can take its toll on us. We can find ourselves repeating some of the stages of grief we felt ini-tially, as we’re hit by huge waves of emotions, similar to what we experienced initially: grief, heartache, pain, questioning, etc. One of the stages we should always welcome is that of reflection. (i.e. Reflection: careful thought, especially the process of reconsidering previous actions, events or decisions.)

For me, reflection has been a critical part of the healing and personal growth process when I think about my friends’ tragic accident on October 26, 2001.

{Abbreviated book excerpt} October 26, 2001, was a sunny, crisp fall morning and as I walked Lau-rie out to her van, we talked about the difficult year she’d been through. I hugged her and said, “I love you and am so proud of you!”. “I love you back!” she said as she drove off.

About twenty minutes later, I heard the constant whirring of a helicopter. After noticing it was Life Flight, I decided to walk down to the scene of the accident. Upon arrival, shock waves hit instantly; I couldn’t breathe, my throat tightened and tears flowed as I saw Laurie’s van had been T-boned by a large truck. (No fault of the truck driver.) I ask the policeman, “Where is she - the lady in the van?” He indicated she was in the helicopter.

The rest of the story is that she wasn’t okay. Laurie’s brain damage was terribly severe -she would never be the same.

For weeks after the accident, I’d spent much of my time at the hospital trying to help Laurie wake up and praying for a miracle. One morning when my alarm went off, I was so exhausted I just laid there thinking about all the things I had to do…have to get up, get my kids up, make breakfast, pack lunches, drive them to school…then begin all my have to’s for work.

I wanted to pull the covers over my head and not have to do anything.

Then something life-changing happened: I pic-tured Laurie lying in her hospital bed - unable to do one thing for herself or those she adored. If she could get up and do everything on my list (your list ~ any list), she would have done it with sheer joy and gratitude.

My perspective transformed! I began thanking God for the abilities to perform the simple every-day miracles I’d just been complaining about and purposed to never say, “I have to” or I’ve got to again, instead “I Get To!”®. {End excerpt}

Over a decade later, I wish I could say that since that moment of revelation and pure gratitude washed over me, I have lived every day with my “I Get To!”® attitude and perspective completely intact. The reality is perspective isn’t permanent. Mindsets must be reset continually. Every part of who we are: spiritually, mentally, emotionally, physically, financially, relationally – must first be attained, then maintained to be retained. That’s one reason we all need other people in our lives to help us stay focused on what matters and live the life we know we’re meant to.

One of the most important things I do as a speaker and coach is offer 1) information and 2) inspira-tion (with practical tools) for 3) implementation. There’s a huge chasm between knowing and doing. I have plenty of experience on both sides of this since I get to see my clients’ personal/

professional development as well as experienc-ing my career benefit in having business coaches myself. (How key were coaches to Olympic athletes’ success?) For most of us, it’s not that we don’t KNOW, it’s that we simply don’t DO, without accountability. In business and life, high per-formers apply what they know – consistently, regardless of how they feel!

So, in reflecting on the anniversary of this tragedy, as always, I have a choice. I’ve decided I’m choosing to welcome it as an opportunity to remind, renew and recommit to even more consistently apply my “I Get To!”® perspective principle ~ maintaining gratitude, regardless of life’s challenges. I hope you’ll join me!

“Growing up, it was ‘go to school and get a job’, not ‘pursue your entrepreneurial spir-it’,” says Larson, now creating opportuni-ties to cultivate people’s business passions through the Meridian ETC.

“Our wonderful economy has opened our eyes,” Larson shares, “It’s a blessing. No longer in what are supposedly safe, cushy jobs, many are pursuing their purpose.”

An established small business safety net, the one-year-old as of September 9th ETC will have its anniversary celebration and ribbon-cutting on September 18th. Its perfect home is Meridian, where the focus is to become an entrepreneurial hub for the Treasure Valley.

“We’re our own poster child for ideal mem-bers,” says Larson, “Those who consistently challenge themselves to do better, be better, and provide better service, who’ll appreciate the lessons we’ve learned,” Larson laughed, “They haven’t all been fun, but they have been great experiences.”

“We believe in connectedness,” she contin-ued, “Ideal members are those in business a couple of years, working in locations that aren’t suiting their needs. They want to be around others who’ll support them in im-proving their businesses and lives.”

So many people, though, are merely in sur-vival mode.

“That’s human nature, it’s in our DNA,” Larson says, “First recognize it, and ac-knowledge a change has to be made. When stressed out and just in ‘survival’ mode, don’t attempt to network or build business. You’ll take everybody down with you,” of-fers Larson, whose ‘Check your energy’ sign hangs on her office door.

“We can shift from that mode by realizing the gifts and talents we’re given are not there to serve ourselves. They’re there to serve others.”

As fellow Go-GiverCoach Ron Kern joined the discussion, Kern commented, “If you’re blessed, bless others. Don’t do the check and balance of ‘did I get mine?’ Empow-erment and opportunity increases the less you keep track.”

Larson added, “No successful business-person I’ve talked to has their main focus on money. Their primary focus is adding value.”

A good start is to have a coach to who’ll give honest input and look out for your best interests, not someone who’ll put you into a job that leaves you as unhappy as you were in your last position. Coach Larson, Kern, and other ETC coaches Erin Cross and Geneal White, want to see you succeed in your true vocation. To do that, business-es need a current plan.

“Many don’t have written plans, or if they do, they’re on the shelf collecting dust,” says Larson, “That’s like taking a road map from the 1800s to navigate the coun-try now. It’s got to be updated, because in business there are detours. Ask where you’re at, where you want to be, and how you’re going to get there.”

Joining the Meridian ETC is a great first step.

LARSON CREATIVES INTRODUCES THE NEWNAMPA CHAMBER OFCOMMERCE LOGO SERIES

Its always a pleasure to workwith the Nampa Chamber teammembers, Georgia Bowman, Dawn Callaham and Debbie Kling. They always bring energyand enthusiasm to the table.

My wife Georgina, and I are bothcommercial artists, designers, and illustrators, and we’ve worked togetherfor—well, I’m not going to say how long.

Georgia Bowman sent us an emailmessage at the beginning of the summer and asked for some help in designing a new Nampa Chamberlogo. So the first thing we did, as we do for all our clients, is scope out thecompetition. (We look at whats beingdone, then make it better.) In this case,Georgina researched what other Chambers are doing around the country, and next we reviewed thenewest trends for marks. We are constantly reviewing global styles.

In the design phase, we sketch onpaper and work out graphic solutionswith typography on-screen, until wecome up with a dozen or so ideas, and through elimination, design 4 or 5examples we think would interest theChamber committee. Each example displays a distinct design trend. One for instance illustrated an emergingNampa, while another portrayed an already arrived Nampa you had to look up to, and so on.

The mark they chose, was selected for its graphic force with its bold

letterforms, energy, and versatility. This design is not only contemporary, it characterizes market dominance and simplicity.

The letters NC for Nampa Chamberare bold enough to portray photos, making this logo unique in that it can be its own billboard. Different photoscan be used to illustrate the Chamber’s

various venues, and we will be assistingin creating examples of this design. Thelogo can be used small in its solid colorform, or very large such as on the coverfor a prospectus as a design element. Many color schemes were proposed, but this one with sky blue and aqua was chosen for its fresh, vibrant, andoptimistic outlook.

Graphic design styles are subject tochange along with decor, the fashion industry, and automotive design, etc. Itis important when designing a mark orlogo to be early in the style curve. Thislogo should remain stylish for at least adecade and furnish our Chamber withexceptional performance.

Rick Hutchinson and Dennis White are the owners of Ontario Building Center. They purchased the land and buildings that were previously operated as Stunz Lumber in 2001. Since then, the business has expanded to include much more than lumber. They have become a popular contractor yard, selling primarily to contractors who build everything from houses to outbuildings, from remodels to commercial buildings.

The business is far from outdated. For example, if a customer is interested in their custom cabinetry, Ontario Building Center can use their CAD system to generate a three-dimensional floor plan concept. This allows potential buyers to see on screen what their home may look like with their new Medallion cabinets installed.

Ontario Building Center has a very tight-knit group of loyal cus-tomers. It is these contractors that make the company fun to own. “I enjoy the joking and kidding around,” says Hutchinson. “You get to know your customers well enough, they become your friends.”

The community is another element of this business that cannot be overlooked. Just by stepping into the store it is obvious that the people at Ontario Building Center care about the area youth, and are also very generous to local chapters of organizations such as the Lions Club. The wall behind the counter is covered with “thank you” awards from 4-H and FFA members as well as little league baseball teams.

The Ontario Building Center is reminiscent of every small town lumberyard across America. The aisles of nuts and bolts, various types of chain and rope sold by the foot, tools, and equipment stand in front of a long counter where people lean and attentively listen to the advice given by the professionals on the other side. On either side of the room are various implements such as custom cabinets available to be

installed. Out back are stacks of lumber and sheetrock, metal and plastic pipes, roofing, and everything else a contractor or weekend handyman might need for their next big project.

What ICB has done for their business:

When rick Hutchinson and his partner Dennis White bought Stunz Lumber in 2001, they received their loan to purchase the land, build-ing, and initial inventory through another bank. It wasn’t long af-ter, however, that they moved all of their banking to Intermoun-tain Community Bank, and Sandy Hemenway, the Branch President, stepped in to take care of them. She assisted in helping Ontario Building Center finance the land, buildings, vehicles, inventory, and a brand new computer system.

Impressed with the bank and its customer service, Ontario Build-ing Center continues coming to Intermountain Community Bank for all of its financial needs. Along with their regular banking, they now use Intermountain Community Bank to carry their yearly operating line, and have recently financed an update to their computer system.

“Sandy is always so helpful and easy to work with. We really appreciate that,” says Hutchinson.

Ontario Building Center also helped Fruitland High School by providing the funds and materi-als needed to build a ticket booth for their baseball field. This year, they have also donated toward the construction of Ontario High School’s new baseball diamond. Other philanthropic efforts in-clude assisting with several Eagle Scout projects over the years, as well as donations to other youth organizations.

For your building supply needs in the western Treasure Valley, call Ontario Building Center at 541-889-9647 or visit them in Ontario, Oregon at 407 East Idaho Avenue.

Where Customers Become FriendsBecky Parry went to beauty school to have a job that paid

well while in college studying business management. Some-times the best business lessons are learned by doing. She has

a background in event coordinating, catering, beauty supply com-pany educator, and hair show coordinator. Becky also assisted the fashion industry super-vising runway models and trade show events. She even ran a corpo-rate salon, but it wasn’t personal enough for her.

“Not a get ‘em in, get ‘em out sort of person,” she says.

Becky combined her experience into Main Tamers Salon, a full-service, full-family Middleton Salon that was established 30 years ago. Becky has been owner and operator for the last 15 years. At first a part-owner, she later became sole proprietor. Becky’s specialty is haircut design and has attended multiple classes, including the Redken Exchange in NYC.

“Customers become my friends,” Becky says, “I’m here for them, not just for a haircut. When people walk into my salon, they feel at home. We’re upbeat, not gossipy, and enjoy our job. People tell us ‘We just want to come down and hang out, because you guys are funny!’

Living in Middleton since first grade, Becky has strong ties. “I love the hometown feel, love my community and that it’s growing. You don’t need to leave town to shop.”

Safe andEmpoweredAt a self-defense training course, an officer asked Rosi Ray, “If

you have a gun, are you really going to use it? If the answer is no, don’t bother buying it.”

“Many of us know someone who’s been attacked or raped,” says Rosi, who sighted a holiday bazaar cosmetic-looking booth last Oc-tober. After hearing a stun gun sound, she learned it was Damsel in Defense. Rosi bought the entire bundle of products. After learning more about the company started by two Meridian women (with now over 900 reps), she joined.

The products are Idaho-legal and a safe, comfortable defense al-ternative that’s easily accessible. Since not every woman frequents sporting goods stores where there’s pepper spray and other defense items, you’ll find Damsel in Defense at public venues and in-home parties.

“Your whole posture is different,” says Rosi, “products function as a deterrent that causes no permanent damage, allowing someone escape time. The noise also scares off dogs.”

950,000 to 7.5 million volts, there’s a range for everyone’s comfort level, holding charges for up to 60 days, and all stun guns double as flashlights. Products don’t look like weapons, so would-be attackers are unsure if it’s just a flashlight, cell phone, or something more. Disabling pins attach to the wrist, ensuring the stun guns aren’t used on the owner, and keeping curious kids safe.

Damsel in Defense has an entire line of security products that are light, sleek, feminine, and empower women.

The showroom at Innovative Interiors takes you out of the or-dinary and into the place dream homes are made. The room is filled with elegant draperies with coordinating fabrics for bedding

and upholstery alongside shimmering tiles and subdued marble. There is wood flooring, light fixtures and luxurious carpet samples. The ingredi-ents for building the perfect atmosphere in any home lay at your finger-tips. However, bringing everything together starts to make the task seem more daunting, and perhaps there needs to be some budgeting in order for you to enjoy the utopia you’re planning.

Judy Harmon Stallcop and Janet Harmon Rodriguez have been in the design industry collectively over 44 years. In earlier years, the two ar-ranged flowers and coordinated fabrics for family weddings and events. Eventually Stallcop and Rodriguez started their own interior design business, and through their superior customer service and quality work, they have excelled. Their work is known throughout the Treasure Valley among commercial and residential clients.

A distinguishing element of Innovative Interiors is the way they go about each project. The first, most important aspect of the project is the people involved. The sisters are very involved in getting to know what their client likes, what they do, as well as knowing their family and lifestyle. “The things we do affect how our clients feel about their home,” says Rodriguez, “They like that we take that extra time to make sure it is right.”

Stallcop adds that “The household environment affects everyone who lives there. It makes a huge impact on how people think and feel.”

The time spent is worth-while in more ways than one. Most clients be-come long term friends and repeat clients. “We have been blessed with a business that combines making a difference in people’s lives and making friends with our clients,” says Stallcop.

Many of the sisters’ inspirations and values come from that early point in their lives. They worked hard, learned fiscal responsibility, strengthened family bonds, and nurtured the creativity they had such a natural gift for.

The sisters took instinctively to design, in part because their mother en-joyed her ability to transform a room, changing things so that it suited the family perfectly. In fact, when the family first moved from their Montana farm to a hundred-year-old house in a nearby town, Stallcop and Rodriguez’s mother spent a lot of time turning the house into a welcoming home.

A common misconception that Stallcop and Rodriguez work against is that interior design is an expensive, luxury experience, and that even with a budget in place, projects will be costly. At Innovative Interiors, this is simply not the case. They emphasize that quality is the key ele-ment no matter how large or small the budget. “We are very financially conservative and work very well within a budget,” says Stallcop, “It can be fun to find creative ways to maximize what we can do for a client within those set limits.”

Innovative Interiors is a business built upon friendships and good client relationships. The work performed by Stallcop and Rodriguez is under-scored by their commitment to their clients’ happiness and to the growth of a new friendship. “As time passes, you keep track of families and what is going on in their lives and it makes it very meaningful. The work is secondary,” says Rodriguez.

If you would like to speak with Judy Harmon Stallcop or Janet Harmon Rodriguez, call Innovative Interiors at 208-463-7669. You can also visit

their new showroom, located at 2071 12th Avenue South in Nampa. Find them online at www.InnovativeInteriorsIdaho.com.

In the year 2009, a mysterious illness forced us to take my son Donavon Holton to West Valley Medical Center. He wasn’t there long before they rushed him to St. Alphonsus in Boise where there is the foremost pediatric care for numerous acute and chronic pediatric diseases. While under their excellent care, a nurse by the name of Don Scott visited us every day during his off time. He was an expert in diabetes and juvenile diabetes. It was during these visits that he educated us about living with juvenile diabetes and how it is possible to live a long, happy life with our son. It’s amazing and frankly scary when it came to how little we actually knew about the disease. It is frightening to think what would have happened if Don hadn’t entered our lives when he did! After spending close to a week with him in the Pediatric ICU, Don became a father figure to our family. During our conversations he mentioned a wonderful camp experience reserved just for Type 1 diabetic kids in Idaho, operated entirely by volunteer doctors and nurses from around the state. Such a great social and educational opportunity for children. The best part is that they never turn a kid away, due to inability to pay! Upon learning this, I decided my annual Block Party would become a benefit for Idaho Diabetes Youth Programs.

(WWW.HODIA.ORG) Yes, it is great to provide an opportunity for kids to socialize with other children of the same age group and unfortunate situation, but I owe my son’s life (and frankly, my own life) to this kind and thoughtful man that was the originator of this organization.

It was a terrible week of sickness for my son before we decided to take him to the hospital and I do not wish for ANY parents to go through that same experience! A tear comes to my eye when I remember those days and I wish we had admitted him sooner. I now vow to continuously raise awareness to Type 1 Diabetes and the many different signs that indicate a child may be diabetic. You are not in this alone, there is a wonderful fam-ily right here in our Valley to support us. At this years’ Rock The Block, I had the pleasure of meeting wonderful parents and their children living with Type 1 Diabetes, some of whom weren’t even aware that such an organization even existed!

The Block Party takes place at my house in Caldwell. I’m very thankful to my neighbors that allow me to continue this, one of them even prepares and sells food to add to the donation! This year we had Neil Noel with a live remote broadcast of Eclipse Radio, www.eclipseradiobroadcasting.com. He’s very

supportive of great local causes and local music. Another big thank you is going out to Best Western in Caldwell. They heart-warm-ingly donated a room for a paraplegic friend in Twin Falls to visit us and show her support for Hodia! If you have friends or family visiting from out of town, please consider booking a room at Best Western!

The party started at 4 p.m. with Bill Waugh. Due to technical problems my friend Robert Chase and his band Highway 30 played two full sets, it’s a good thing everyone LOVES them! I’d like to give a very special thank you to Brian Bateman, who gave us a preview of the set he’d be playing when he opened for Meat Loaf that following Monday July 2nd, at the Eagle Pavillion. It was his son Colvin’s Birthday that day, but he knows

how important diabetes awareness is to his dad who has Type 2 Diabetes. A very big thank you to Colvin the Birthday Boy! Our friend Erin Goodell, manager of Fallen Idols from Emmett, contacted and directed several vendors that had a great time and were VERY popular, especially her Snow Cone vendor!

My fiance Kim Ledda and I would love to see you at our next Block Party in July of 2013, Benefiting Idaho Diabetes Youth Programs, where we will be inviting back The Fallen Idols. At 9pm we enjoyed the Fallen Idols from Emmett and they totally rocked the joint. You can find them supporting many great events around the Valley. The weekend after our benefit they all shaved their heads for a benefit they were playing at the Power House to support Matthew Fredericks who is currently battling Brain Cancer. Fallen Idols give 150% with every performance. If you take time to see them at a show, you will not be disappointed.

Headlining the night at 10pm was none other than my boys, Grindsole from Caldwell. They’ve been playing to-gether since the year 2010, and I’ve been their man-ager for almost a year now, one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I fell in love with their music immediately. I intended to make some great new friends as their manager, but they have accepted Kim and I as family! Lead guitar is played by Ryan Green, Bass by Dan

Longstreet. Dan’s 16-year-old son David plays drums, and my brother from another mother on vocals is John-ny Lane. We’ve played great shows for some great causes and we invite you to find us and other local bands on Facebook and Reverbnation to see which events you can attend.

As for the next Block Party and Hodia (Idaho Diabetes Youth Programs), please let me know if you’d like to get involved or get more information. ([email protected])

This Summer alone, Hodia helped approximately 50 young and newly- diagnosed campers learn to give their first injections, or put their insulin pump in a new place. Also, every camper left with a better understanding of counting carbohydrates and reassurance about dosing their own insulin. With a great purpose like Hodia, there will always be a need for year-round support. There are numerous money raising events to attend and assist, and we can always use self-motivated volunteers. If you would like to find more information on this great organization, please visit www.hodia.org.

He later was a gondola foreman on high-tech ski lifts that had a ton of electronic and redundant safety devices. If 30 people

got stuck in ten-degree weather, they’d have to be lowered down with a rope. That never happened with Bailey on the job, who memorized schematics and electronic circuitry so he could troubleshoot and save the day.

If you haven’t yet gotten the impression that this man is brilliant, read on.

Bailey says, “For every one mechanical thing that breaks on an appliance nowadays, there are going to be five electronic things breaking first. Taking the electronics apart, I’ll use a solder-ing gun to repair it, good as new. Some people replace instead of repair because they don’t have the knowledge to fix it. I took the initiative to learn the extra stuff.”

Not comfortable with programs that charged a standard $500 for repairs, Bailey feels customers shouldn’t have to pay 25% of the purchase price every time they needed appliance fixes.

“You can service appliances without gouging people,” he explained. Figuring he’d have very little business in his opening months of May, June and July, Bailey was surprised.

“May and June saw more business than I could imagine,” said Bailey, slightly shaking his head, “There was business in July and August has been good, too. The phone just kept ringing.”

Perhaps Bailey’s reputation as one who knows his trade precedes him. He’d been working in the Treasure Valley for over a decade after completing a tour of duty in the U.S. Coast Guard as an elec-tronics technician/industrial mechanic. Basin Appliance Repair’s goal is to provide honesty, uncommon value, and reliable and com-plete full service, which is why this next part won’t surprise you:

“I’ve created a product for dishwashers and washing machines called the Basin Blaster,” Bailey added, “It’s a citrus-based machine cleaner, used in front-loading washers and dishwashers. I also have the Basin Booster, an additive for your powdered soap that makes it clean better.”

Electronics, mechanics…chemistry?

“I try!” said Bailey, explaining that when phosphates were banned and complaints about foggy glasses arose, he learned from the big companies about what worked and what didn’t. Then he developed his own, inexpensive formulas. Just add a teaspoon and water becomes more acidic, breaking down as the phosphates once did. Genius. Bailey also writes a blog with links on Basin

Appliance Repair’s Facebook page, giving tips on how to best use and maintain your appliances. When asked if he’s looking to

develop his own Basin line of products, Bailey grinned and said, “I’m considering it!” and adds, “I’m not just the guy that

puts a belt on your washing machine.”

Truer words have seldom been spoken. If your appliances are letting you down, call the guy who doesn’t leave anyone hanging. Call Randy Bailey with Basin Appliance Repair.

Brandon Wright knows business.

He’s founded and/or helped create the Ultra-Clean SmokeOut, Meridian Business Day, Wright Stuff Radio, and VIBESbb book club. On TV and radio often, Wright’s view on all of this might be surprising:

“Being well-known or being in the public eye does not create business for you. Relationships create business.”

Although a believer in networking groups that promote and encourage connections between business people, Wright says that the key con-cept of winning relationships are results. Be-cause of this, he emphasizes the need for more, which is why Wright brings HuddleShare.com into the Treasure Valley. HuddleShare.com en-ables people working as a group to learn, grow and share. Its business model includes a weekly one-hour conference call through the web that brings presenters with specific strategies and systems, helping attendees engage with others concerning their relationship management and business ideas. It’s just this easy: You call in to your group line each week, listen and share, then come away full of inspiration and informa-tion that can be implemented immediately.

“I look forward to the opportunities that HuddleShare.com will provide for our local business community professionals,” says Wright, “The concept of sharing indus-try-specific ideas, trends, fears and successes without competitiveness will help struggling businesses and inspire those businesses that are doing well through sharing what’s working. We grow both as people and business own-ers. In today’s environment it’s difficult to do everything by ourselves. We need what moti-vates and educate us, keeping us at the top of our game. HuddleShare is all about relationships,” says Wright, conversationally leading into his Project Top20.

“Most people have heard of the 80/20 Rule. Project Top20 is the concept of encouraging people to build their list of dream clients, cheer-leaders, and referral sources. Then, you dedicate yourself to building a system for developing those relationships beyond just a business trans-action.”

“There are systems for most things in life,” Wright continues, “But we’ve found that many people don’t have a system for building or maintaining business relationships. It’s not really about the products or services offered, it’s all about establishing individual relationships with each one of them.”

On a recent HuddleShare.com conference call, Wright told of how one of his UltraCleanPro Disaster Response Team employees brought dog bones to a company that had a dog at the office when marketing to them.

“If you’re using the usual model, nothing sets you apart,” says Wright, “I guarantee everyone who solicited that business never recognized the attachment the employees had to the own-er’s dogs. It’s all about differentiation, being sincere and transparent with what you do. We influence those we do business with. Business-es that are getting great results in this econo-my have one thing in common: They have a system that keeps them connected to those they do business with. If you have trouble develop-ing your own system, then use HuddleShare.com’s online tool, 22 Touch.com.”

That’s what they use in Wright’s service busi-ness, UltraCleanPro. You can try this system for 30 days to understand how to develop it yourself, or stick with using the online model through the website at http://www.huddle-share.com/22-touch-system/.

“Networking can make you popular, but it won’t always get you business, it’s about get-ting others to use you or your product,” Wright says, “People won’t refer you until they trust you, or trust you until they have established the three foundations to doing business, which is that they must know you, like you and trust you.”

How to get others to know, like and trust you? Join HuddleShare.com’s Project Top20.

The Top 20 Project is something Brandon Wright really believes in.

“Make the business relationship personal. When we help people without expecting anything in return, we’ll realize results, and find that it’s not ‘work’ anymore, it’s fun. Whether we are suc-cessful or not all comes down to the relation-ships that we build.”

THE BLUE CANOE(208) 495-2269 | 16479 Hwy 78, Guffey, IDWho can resist the delectable tastes of the Blue Canoe Restaurant and Catering? Most of the free world would much rather give in to the temptation of Debra Lindner’s hand cut and beer-battered fingersteaks, heavenly Angel Wings (which are cheese-stuffed, bacon-wrapped, charbroiled shrimp), or Chicken Cordon Bleu with marinated chicken breast, lean ham, swiss cheese and a slice of grilled pineapple. Not to be forgotten are the famous Crawdads in a Canoe, seasoned tails floating happily in a cheese-filled potato boat, or the tender filet that’s a half pound of bacon-wrapped tenderloin.

‘I feel like we’ve found a treasure,’ ‘You are my new favorite,’ ‘On the short list for all-time best dinners ever.’ ‘Do yourself a favor and go check them out.’

Shanaz Home Kitchen Cuisine & Catering gets rave reviews. One of the great things about Shanaz is that they’re caterers, too! With the holidays coming up, your parties are a guaranteed hit when you’ve got Shanaz. The corporate world’s discovered them for luncheons, spreading the satisfied word around, quickly creating a growing number of Shanaz-fans.

Reviews on Yelp, UrbanSpoon and Facebook couldn’t be better. While the restaurant is Southern Home Cooking with an Island-infused twist, the catering side is whatever you want it to be. Shanaz rocks Italian, Mexican, Asian, Hawaiian Luau-style, you name it.

“We get a lot of positive feedback,” says Shanaz herself, “People tell us ‘your food’s AMAZING!”

Shanaz and her husband James can be found all over the Valley nowadays, cooking up a delicious storm. Recently revamping their menu, they’re also out and about at many local events, bringing the flavor to the people! ISLAND KINE GRINDS(208) 442-94633116 Garrity Blve #4, NampaWhere can we go to get some authentic Hawaiian food around here? Think of the Islands: Ludi and Renus Domingo do. They missed Hawaii’s food so much that they brought it back with them to Idaho. They now share it with all of us. The melting pot that is the Hawaiian Islands finds its way to our plates as Korean, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Thai and other cultures combine to delight our palates and fascinate our forks. Satisfaction is guaran-teed with the Queen of Hawaiian Cuisine cooking; Ludi specializes in what is commonly known as Hawaiian-style comfort food and plate lunches. It’s why people who work in Caldwell and Meridian make a fast trip to Garrity Boulevard during their lunch hour; for those who’ve tasted the Island goodness, there’s no such thing as enough. The last part of the restaurant’s name, ‘grinds’ is Hawaiian for ‘get your grub on’. This is one eatery where you’ll be really, really glad you did. Taste the aloha at Island Kine Grinds, or taste it at your company party, wedding reception or event with IKG’s deliciously convenient catering. Like the restaurant on Facebook, because you’re going to love it in person.

CAFÉ DE COCO (208) 465-6428 117 13th Avenue S. NampaAnyone wanting to share a memory with someone they care about needs to visit the ever-charming Café de Coco. Operated in a nostalgic downtown Nampa building, with their captivating gift shop, whimsically mismatched tables and chairs, you can’t help but fall in love with the place. It’s the perfect intimate venue in which to catch up with friends, or for that special parent-child lunch. Sit back, let out a long sigh and relax to the soft music as you’re absolutely spoiled by Café de Coco’s warm, attentive staff.

Café de Coco’s Turkey Focaccia has been called ‘the best sandwich in the world’. Their savory homemade quiche creates cravings you can do nothing about, other than to answer the call. There are delicious soups, salads and sandwiches to choose from; and choosing is often a tough choice. Not to worry, you can return again and again for a chance to try some-thing else that’s tempted you. Skip dessert? Not on your life: Mouth-watering cinnamon rolls, chocolate cherry fudge cake, huckleberry scones with Devonshire cream and lemon curd, cheesecake topped with strawberries, and multiple flavors of creamy gelato are all the rage of Café de Coco’s happy patrons. On your way out, peruse the gift shop for jewelry, a scarf, or a keepsake to take home as a souvenir of the time you’ve spent with friends or family.

Many Café de Coco customers have dubbed the establishment as ‘the most adorable café they’ve ever been to’. Visit today and experience this Nampa treasure for yourself.

The Blue Canoe will float right to you, because they’re not only the pride of Guffey, (near Murphy, Idaho) they’re the pride of the catering world, too. Count on them to provide that personal touch at a gathering of 15 or 500! Office parties, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, reunions, the holidays…you name it, The Blue Canoe can furnish the food. When a person seriously decides that they want to improve their diet

and clean the toxins out of their system, every cell in their body lines up with that decision. From the first colonic, the body begins to throw toxins out from all the other systems, into the other eliminative organs. The general process is the body cleans from the head down and from the inside out.

The body is cyclical in nature so, here you are, you have improved your diet, come in for a few colonics, and you feel on top of the world. Great energy, peaceful, and focusing well on all you do. The next day you get up and feel as if you are getting the flu, with a runny nose, sore muscles, and a headache. Most people at this point would think they are getting sick. The truth is that the body has now, on its own begun to attempt to throw toxins out. Do you have a history of sinus infections? That is why your nose is now trying to clean out the sinuses. The muscles may ache because they are now shaking out old acids that had them somewhat locked up. The headache is usually because you have now made room in the colon by moving

some of the matter out, and you are beginning to have room for old large gas bubbles to try to work their way down and out. These bubbles of flatulence expand and push some of the toxins up against the wall of the colon where they are now being absorbed into the bloodstream and overtaxing the liver. There-fore, the headache. This is just one example of what is called “retrac-ing.” Retracing is the process of the body clearing out old toxins and disease in the reverse order of how they occurred. In other words, if you had a cold a month ago, and a rash six months ago, the toxins that created the cold would move to work their way out first, and then a smaller version of the skin rash would occur as those toxins were attempting to leave.

Every symptom the body exhibits during the cleansing process should be discussed with your colon hydro-therapist, and your health care prac-titioner of choice. Every symptom leads to your next level of health. Whether it is a symptom, or a craving for a particular food, the body is trying to tell you something. If you listen and support the body with appropriate foods, supple-ments, and appropriate as needed

body work, a cleansing crisis should not last more than three days. The same process occurs concerning old stresses, traumas, and occurrences that have made a not so healthy impact on the body’s nervous system. Bach Flower treatments, massage, chiropractic care, and stress treatments using the acupres-sure points can help you clear these symptoms up quicker and with more comfort. The wonderful thing is that each time you have a crisis it will not last as long, and each time that you feel better, it will last longer. The goal is optimum health, joy, and quality of life. Let me help you get there, if you will.

From all the information available today everyone knows that exercise

is important to maintaining optimum health at any age. This is true for the senior population as well. Not only is this true for seniors, but exercise may be even more important for seniors.

The old adage “use it or lose it” is magni-fied in the elderly. This is primarily be-cause aging causes a loss of muscle mass that is concurrent with the decline of all the bodily systems which can become sluggish as time progresses. What does not slow down for seniors is the rate of decline for non-use. When an individual is in their thirties and forties, one can get away with exercising only on occasion and, often, when a stricter exercise regi-men is resumed, the effects can be seen rather quickly.

It is a very different picture in the senior population. Not only is muscle slower to regenerate in seniors but the lack of weight bearing exercise contributes to a decrease in bone density and places them at an increased risk for fractures.

Another casualty of the sedentary life-style is balance. Poor balance in the senior population can be caused by several factors including medications and health conditions, but one pre-ventable cause is a lack of use. One way to maintain better balance is by simply taking a 30 minute walk a few times a week or going for a bicycle ride. Performing balance exercises as simple as balancing on one foot and then the other while standing next to a counter or bed for support will help to restore better balance more quickly. Balance improves with use and declines quickly if not maintained. Poor balance is the nemesis of seniors, wreaking havoc by way of falls, broken hips, fractured pel-vises and head injuries. Many of these injuries can be prevented with regular exercise.

Another benefit of regular exercise to the senior population (as in all age groups) is mood elevation. The social aspect of walking with a buddy and the physical aspect of getting the blood pumping to all body parts (including the brain) releases endorphins, which have a positive impact on their mood.

To sum it up, exercise in any form is beneficial to the senior population for many reasons. So grab a friend, a pair of sneakers, and a cane if you’re unsteady at all, and start moving. You’ll be all the better for it and be able to maintain a more independent lifestyle longer.

There are many resources for learning safe effective exercises for seniors. The Treasure Valley YMCA has exercise programs specifically developed for se-niors, and in the next few weeks they are launching a new “Well Achieve” program designed for the elderly popu-lation.

If you have questions or concerns about a senior in your life, call Victoria with Care for Living at 473-8254 or email her at [email protected]

Additionally, the following website has a variety of senior exercise op-tions as well as advice and instruction: www.ehow.com/way_5407398_geriat-ric-exercise-routines.html

As we approach the exciting beginning of a new school year, parents can do many things to help their chil-dren be safe and successful. While parents want to focus on the good of school, in a positive way they

also need to approach the possibility of peer-related problems such as bullying. Parents can be proactive to help prevent bullying and to get help for children that are bullied as well as for children that bully others.

Parents should talk with their children often and ask them specific questions. After school starts parents can ask chil-dren how the kids in their classes get along and should specifically ask if anyone gets picked on or bullied. Even before the school year begins parents can talk with children about treating others with respect, what bullying is, and what a child should do if he or she is bullied or if they observe someone else being bullied. These conversations are important for children of all ages. Parents should also talk with teachers to help identify and ad-dress bullying and other problems.

If a child is bullied parents can explain that it is not that child’s fault. Parents can teach children that if a child is confronted by a bully, the child should remain calm, stand tall and look them in the eye. They can walk away. They may respond with a confidently-spoken phrase such as “I don’t

like what you are doing,” or “Please do not talk to me like that.”¹ Most importantly, if a child is bullied or observes bullying, he or she should report this to an adult even if there is pressure not to.² If parents help children rehearse these responses at home, there is a greater likelihood that they will use them during a real-life situation.

Parents can also help prevent bullying by helping children increase their self-esteem. Extracurricular activities are a great way for children to build friendships and self-confidence. Many other parent-supervised school, church, or neighborhood activities also allow for children to develop friendships in a safe environment. Building self-esteem is critical for a child that has been bullied but also makes it less likely for a child to be targeted by a bully.

Children who bully others also need help in the form of clear and consistent limits and discipline both at home and school. These measures will help decrease the risk of these students experiencing associated problems such as conduct disorder and legal troubles.

In summary, parents can help prevent bully-ing by talking with their children, teaching them how to respond and promoting their self-esteem. These actions will allow for greater safety and success at school.
