• Uruguay is located of thecoast of South America, South ofBrazil.• The capitol of Uruguay isMontevideo.• Montevideo is located in South Uruguay.

Uruguay’s Flag

• Uruguay’s flag is composed of 9 horizontal stripes, 5 white and 4 blue, and a yellow sun in the top left corner. The sun in the corner has 8 straight lines and 8 curved lines.

• Uruguay’s flag colors were inspired by Argentina’s flag colors, and the design of Uruguay’s flag was inspired by America’s flag design.

• The sun on the top left corner of Uruguay’s flag is the Sun of May, and the nine stripes represent Uruguay’s nine providences at the time the flag was first created.

Uruguay’s Independence

• Uruguay had to fight its way to independence againstSpain and then Brazil and Argentina.• On August 25, 1825, a group of representatives fromthe Banda Oriental met in La Florida and declared theindependence of Uruguay from the Portuguese Empire. • On August 27, 1828, the independence of Uruguay was recognized by Brazil and Argentina in the Treaty of Montevideo.

Historical Occurrence

• On May 18, 1828, the conflict between Brazil and Uruguay ended with the ending of the Batalla de las Piedras, or Battle of Las Piedras. Now Uruguay’s victory is celebrated every May 18 as a

National Holiday.

• On June 19, the people of Uruguay celebratethe birth of their greatest national hero, JoseGervasio Artigas. • Jose Artigas was a war herothat fought for independenceagainst Argentina, Brazil, andSpain.

Famous Structure

• The Hand of Uruguay, is a structure created in Brava Beach in Punta Del Este, Uruguay, by Mario Irarrazabal. The Hand is a structure of four pieces of steel and cement coming out of the sand. It was created for a competition in 1982, and is now one of the most famous landmarks in Uruguay.

Famous Geological, Ecological, or Environmental Feature

• Uruguay is partly famous for it’s miles and miles of beaches. Punta del Diablo, is where you can get away from the city life and enjoy a nice quiet, rural area, where you canfish, surf, and enjoy the nature of Uruguay.

Famous Man of Uruguay

• Eduardo Hughes Galeano is a writer, novelist, and journalist from Uruguay. He was born September 3, 1940. His best known works are Memoria del fuego; or Memory of Fire, 1986; and Las venas abiertas de America Latina; or Open Veins of Latin America, 1971.

Famous Woman of Uruguay

• Juana de America (1892-1979), or Juana de Ibarbourou, was a Uruguayan poet from Galicia, Spain. Her poems, some of which were highly erotic, spoke of her feelings about being surrounded by nature and made her one of the most famous poets from Spanish America.

FIFA World Cup

• In the 1950 FIFA World Cup, held in Brazil, Brazil and Uruguay competed in the final round for victory. Uruguay won the title for the second time.
