    Certainy would be usefl to arrange he exsting Kansai and Kajikawa inro (and

    hose rom oher schools as wel) accordng to their types o sgnaure, sea, and/or

    kakihan. By hs means we shoud estabsh coherent groups. Other characerisic fea-

    ures such as echnique and syle coud hen be used to arrange these groups ino a

    chronoogica order and, perhaps, connec each wth one partcularartist.

    In 1964, I researched the acquer maser Toyo and hs school (von Ragu

    1964 usng this method. At hat ime I ound wenysix dfferen kakihan forms

    beongng to six major types (Fig. 9) al occurring with sgnaures rom he Toyo

    schoo The lacquer objecs belongng to the diferen kakihan ypes (Fig. 9, A hrough

    F qute obvousy ormed coheren groups, which by arthstorica means could be

    arranged n chronoogcal order Whle general quaity stye techniques, sense o

    color, and other characersics were not suffcent bythemselves to gve a coser dae

    o he Toyo acquer objecs, a hese feaures f astonshngly well nto the groups

    estabished by kakihan ypes. I became possble no onlyo recognze ndvdual

    masters bu even to ideny a ake sgnaure.

    Several recent inro caalogs reproduce not ony he ino bu also he complete

    signaure wth seal or kakihan evidence o the ac ha a sudy o signaures, seas,

    and kakihan may open newand necessary avenues o inro research.To sum up, I suggest frther research on inro datng n three ways: by a cose

    survey of dated prnts and book llustraons used as models for inro decoraon; by a

    drawn next to each other The jikiro is contaned in a back urushcoated box, at the

    bottom of which the foowing characters are found: coored drawng"; a sack of

    gold dust"; id attached"; phoenix and dragon design n the Manrek stye"; and

    made by Chokan, the urushi master"

    The jiki is called a sack of god dust" This name derves from ts round

    shape The two characters sgnfying nobe" and wealth" aso suggest ts name. Asthe writing on the bottom of the box indcates, the coud, phoenx, and dragon

    designs folow the stye of the Manrek (Wani period of the Mng dynasty (1368

    1644 The stylzed flower petas, seen together with the phoenx, dragon, and clouds,

    become symbols of the sacred mountans, typcal of Chinese goodfortune patterns.
