d u r i n g t h e e n g r a v i n g p r o c e s s . S i n c e t h e s e e n g r a v i n g mac h i n e s a r e i n t e n d e d t o engrave v a r i o u s t y p e s o f a r t i c l e s

o f d i f f e r e n t s i z e s , s h a p e s a n d f o r m s , t h e manner o f h o l d i n g

t h e a r t i c l e i s an i m p o r t a n t p a r t o f an a l l purpose e n g r a v

i n g m a c h i n e . H e r e t o f o r e , f o r t h e s e a r t i c l e s t o b e ? r m l yh e l d r e q u i r e d an undue c o m p r e s s i v e f o r c e on t h e a r t i c l e

o r o b j e c t , o f t e n t i m e s m a r r i n g o r d e f o r m i n g i t . F u r t h e r ,

t h e a r t i c l e h o l d e r s o f t h e s e e n g r a v i n g m a c h i n e s r e q u i r e d

many hand movements o f t h e o p e r a t o r t o p r o p e r l y p o s i

t i o n t h e a r t i c l e w i t h r e s p e c t t o t h e work t o o l . O p p o s i t e

t h r e a d e d s h a f t s were used t o move t h e j a w s and a p p l y a

o b j e c t t o b e q u i c k l y p o s i t i o n e d r e l a t i v e t o t h e e n g r a v i n g
