HSC DESIGNHSC DESIGN• HSC DESIGN IS NOT TRADITIONAL NA/ENGINEERING, REGARDLESS OF COMMERCIAL OR MILITARY MISSIONS.• HSC SIMILAR TO AIRCRAFT IN TERMS OF WEIGHT SENSITIVITY, RESISTANCE, POWERING.• HOWEVER, HSC HAVE TO DEAL WITH WAVE ENCOUNTER OF VARIOUS HEIGHTS FOR LIFE OF CRAFT.• WAVE ENCOUNTER INCREASES RESISTANCE, DYNAMICALLY LOADS STRUCTURE AND DISTURB PERSONNEL TO GREATER DEGREE THAN CONVENTIONAL SHIPS.

• WEIGHT CONTROL PUTS A LARGE BURDEN ON STRUCTURAL DESIGNER AND SYSTEMS INTEGRATOR.

• WEIGHTS OF ENGINES, GEAR BOXES, GENERATORS ARE FIXED.

• STRUCTURES AND SYSTEMS INTEGRATION ARE AREAS WHERE WEIGHT CONTROL FOCUS IS CRITICAL.

• CONVENTIONAL SHIPS HAVE LARGE CREWS, CABINS, GALLEYS - HSC HAVE SMALL CREWS, NO CABINS, FOOD WARMING, PREPARED MEALS.

• MILITARY HSC MUST ATTAIN SIMILAR LEVELS BUT NOT TO COMPROMISE THE MISSION.

• CONVERSLEY, MISSION REQUIREMENTS CANNOT BE OVERSTATED AND MUST BE RELATIVE TO STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF THE PLATFORM.

• WELD PREPARATIONS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED TO ENSURE DESIGN STRENGTH IS ATTAINED.

• JOINT DETAILS HAVE BEEN VASTLY IMPROVED FROM DEMANDING COMMERCIAL SERVICE EXPERIENCE.

• WELDER EDUCATION, TRAINING AND TESTING UPDATED CONTINUOUSLY.

CONSTRUCTION CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUESTECHNIQUES

• MILITARY HSC MAY HAVE DEADWEIGHT/UPLIFT LIMITS IF USERS ARE NOT WILLING TO ACCEPT SEA STATE LIMITS FOR CRAFT STRUCTURE.

• COMMERCIAL INDUSTRY ARE STILL LEARNING HOW TO DEAL WITH LIMITS WITHOUT BEING OVERLY CONSERVATIVE.

• CURRENT GUIDELINES PROBABLY NOT ADEQUATE FOR MILITARY CRAFT BEING CONTINUOUSLY REPOSITIONED AND MAY NEED TO SAIL IN ALL WEATHER.

• B/I USA WILL BE APPLYING MOTION, ACCELERATION, STRAIN AND SEA STATE MONITORING, TOGETHER WITH DEFINED BRIDGE ACTIONS TO STAY WITHIN DESIGN LIMITS.

• WEATHER FORECASTING AND ROUTE PLANNING WILL BE A CRITICAL PART OF HSC OPS MANAGEMENT.
