Vestnik Khimicheskoi Promyshlennosty, Summer 2002, 22 (2), 42 (in Russian) UK: Huntsman Tioxide – TiO 2 The official opening of Huntsman Tioxide’s second 50,000 tonnes/y ICON unit at Greatham on Teesside took place on 8 November 2002 in the presence of Mr Jon M.Huntsman (founder and Chairman of the Huntsman group) and his son Mr Peter Huntsman (President & Chief Executive Officer). The new unit was declared “fully operational” on 8 October and it brings total TiO 2 pigment capacity at Greatham to 100,000 tonnes/y, consisting of two ICON units, the first having been installed in 1990. Older facilities at the site, with a combined capacity of 30,000 tonnes/y, were shut down earlier this year and have now been dismantled. Huntsman Tioxide invested £58 M to establish the new unit, representing approximately $1830 per tonne/y of capacity. This helps to secure the future of the Tioxide site at Greatham, where 250 direct employees and 250 contractors’ employees are permanently based. Mr Peter Huntsman commented: “The opening of the new ICON-2 plant is not only a tremendous benefit to our Tioxide business; we see it as a welcome and positive contrast to the announcements of plant closures made by other chemical companies on Teesside over the last 18 months. Huntsman is doing its best to help reverse this trend through a number of projects – such as ICON-2 and the recently completed £30 million BOC hydrogen plant at our North Tees site and the £20 million overhaul of our ethylene cracker at Wilton. While we believe our investments have done much to sustain the chemical industry on Teesside, much more remains to be done and it cannot be done by any one company in isolation. If there is to be a viable chemical industry on Teesside well into the future, we urgently need new investment. To achieve that, the industry needs the full support of local, regional and national political and economic forces, as well as a more realistic approach to the issue of grants and incentives to help attract serious would-be investors to Teesside.” Huntsman Tioxide is the leading manufacturer of TiO 2 pigment in Europe and the third largest in the world. The company employs almost 3000 people and has eight plants, with a combined capacity of just under 600,000 tonnes/y.” TiO 2 Worldwide Update, Sep/Dec 2002, 10 (5/6), 14 US: Columbian – carbon black A hurricane hit Texas and Louisiana on 3 October 2002, causing temporary shutdowns at a number of chemical and rubber plants. It will cease manufacturing rubber grades at the end of December 2002 and it will cease manufacturing pigment grades during 1Q 2003. The Baytown site will continue to be used as a carbon black distribution centre. However, cessation of manufacturing activities will result in 65 job losses here. Customers’ requirements will be catered for by ongoing activities at the company’s five other US plants, which have a combined capacity of 445,000 tonnes/y. The plant at Baytown will not be dismantled and DEC holds out the possibility that it may be reopened at some stage in the future if there is a significant upswing in demand. DEC and other carbon black producers in North America have been affected by poor profit margins and weak market conditions for many months. During 3Q 2002, they posted price increases of 9-10%, but it is not yet clear how successful they were in actually implementing these increases. Currently US carbon black prices are reported in the range $0.33-0.35 per pound.
